I posted this rant on my LJ a couple days ago, and just thought I should post it here to provide an interesting perspective......

So I posted Chapter One of Broken on Bulba. And I fear teh flamage I shall get for it. Not that it's a sucky fic; ít's the tragic tale of Giovanni's life as a high school sophomore, and some of the best fic I've written. But I just remember a coupla months ago, when I posted my first fic, Confessions, on Fanfiction.net. And it was a nice story, basically Gio feeling sorry for himself, but I get the feeling that a lotta people hated it because "'WTF? He's showing some conscience! OOC!"

And in Broken, Giovanni -gasp!- shows COMPASSION for another person! Holy crap! Out of character alert!

I can see where people will think I'm being a hypocrite, because he saves the girl, but threatens to kill a trainer's Charmeleon. But, I will point out, he threatens Kyo because *he deserves it*. And, like it says earlier, "Mother said to respect women" or something like that.

I know people don't think that Gio has ever had the capacity to care, but he's a teenager, he's rebellious, and in Broken, he's not sure where the hell he wants to go with his life. But Madam Boss, wonderful woman that she is, gives him more power, and it ends up slowly corrupting him. And there are bigger surprises later on. (If you think that the last part was a spoiler, here's another one for ya: The ship sinks in Titanic. And Harry Potter defeats Voldemort.)

So I guess the whole point of this is, don't be so fast to accuse people of violating the almighty canon or going out of character til ya think about it for awhile. Because sometimes, there's more than meets the eye to a story.

Well yeah, we know he's messed up now, but who's to say what he was like as a kid?

I'd love to see a fic about his journey. I bet that would be interesting.

But yes, connecting the innocence and youthful exuberance of x character with how they would be later is interesting. I'm trying to do that in Obsession, show how Jirarudan became the obsessive, demented loner he is in the movie. Because certain things aren't full-life, they have to be instilled in.

I like the idea of a Gio backstory. We know him as a criminal, but what started him down that path?
