Sometimes, it seems like Ash's not JUST Red...

I'm pretty sure this is fairly obvious, but it never ceases to bug me how for each new anime season, starting with Advanced Generation, Ash's clothes will resemble the Male Player character's to some striking degree. while it's not AS easy to tell with the Advanced Generation edition to Brendan, the subsequent seasons after that get a lot closer to resembling their particular PC. the primary differences with Ash and Lucas's clothes is that Lucas doesn't wear gloves, has a Poketch, the stripe on his shirt is white (not yellow) and his hat is a beret (not a cap)... oh, and he wears a scarf. then there's Hilbert, who also doesn't wear gloves, has the Xtransciever, and his cap is red on the front, white on the back, and the Pokeball symbol is Black (where Ash's red and white colors were flipped and the pokeball symbol was blue).

I'm sure it's not too bad a problem, except it makes me feel like he's basically replacing the Male Character to some extent. the Johto season i feel is an exception since red did exist in GSC, though as an uber-powerful champion as opposed to... well, Ash in said season...

 well, now that I got THAT out of my system, what's your take on Ash's design changes?

Ash's AG outfit wasn't that much like Brendan's, but I agree his other clothes do resemble the male player from those gens.

Ash isn't Red. He is BASED of Red. Big difference. Red has been interpreted differently in the various canons. Why can't people stop complaining about Ash being below Red's level? It's annoying and has gotten pretty stupid.

As time has passed the writers have felt for whatever reason to be lazy and base his outfit of the male players, yet the male players exist within the anime universe.

I'd say it's to appeal to the "new generation craze" at the beginning of each new series. But then I go back to AG and think it's just lazy designing on their part. The AG outfit looks nothing like Brendan's and IMO is his best one.

Because Red treated as a Formidable trainer
Because Red doesn't look as inferior as Ash .
Because Red Character doesn't get reset .
Because Red isn't a nobody like Ash. He is just as famous trainer as Drew.
Because Red doesn't treat as a normal trainer. He treat like a trainer who won the 9th annual Pokemon League while Ash doesn't treat like a trainer who won orange league & a candicate for Frontier Brain.

Ash was indeed based off the player character of the original games, and he has pretty much stood in the place of the male trainers of every gen, save for the second, which got it's own special with those characters, but nothing else. On that note, though, the World of Pokemon segments that do feature the male characters of the games show them pretty much achieving things that Ash can only dream of. This whole Red is better than Ash thing is pretty old now, and I wish people would stop saying that. Yes, we are aware that they are by no means the same character, but they are at least alternate universe versions of each other. Yes, I'm saying Red can't exist in the anime-verse, since Ash is the incarnation of Red for that universe. Is he the same as the other Reds? Not by a long shot. Does he have to be? No. The timeline of the games cannot exist in the anime-verse since the TR collapse never happened and Gary had a different fate than Blue. No, Ash will probably never be the Red we know, but he is still an alternate version of him. The really gimped out version, but a version nonetheless.

Really? What was your first guess? The different names or the different continuities?

In my eyes, Satoshi is representing all these male PCs. He's no longer the "Red of the Anime".

Ash's clothes undeniably are close to the male player characters in recent seasons, but Ash is just that: ASH. He was never Red. In fact, I really don't associate them together that much, because at this point, they don't even really look alike (comparing Indigo League Ash with FR/LG Red).

I can't see how Ash's AG outfit is so similar to Brendan's outfit... but it IS true for DP and BW
For DP, Ash's outfit is a mix of FRLG hero + DP hero... for BW he just stole BW hero's outfit (and if Dawn stayed for BW, I could see her doing a similar thing with the BW heroine)
I'd like to actually get one of the heroes on the main cast, but I guess it just won't happen, because the writers seem to have a "rule" that game player character HAS to be the show's starring character, and not just a sidekick... and I doubt Ash would ever get replaced (also, as said, he's kinda representing all games male heroes by now...) and it seems like they decided they don't want to have a female star anymore (WHY?!) so with Ash being the only star again, I guess we won't see another player character on the cast again (which is actually crazy when you're thinking with advertising in mind - wouldn't the game heroes be better for advertising than random Gym Leaders?)

It was obvious that he wasn't Red due to his first outfit color and brain matter. I don't understand why they made them so different in age and strength. I'm sure kids would have still liked Ash even if he wasn't 10 or less dumber.

I think it's interesting.... to be honest I never thought that closely about it. But it seems to me, as said above, that it's just a representation of the series as a whole. It never really bothered me, though

Ash was unarguably the anime counterpart for Red back when the series first started. He was from Pallet Town and was rivals with Gary (who was essentially Blue's counterpart). He even had similar clothes (many characters like the Gym Leader's clothes didn't perfectly match either). But I think overtime Ash overstayed his welcome and became the anime's avatar for the main/player character, hence why he never ages. He used to be JUST anime's Red, but staying the protagonist for Johto, getting an outfit change in Hoenn, getting an outfit change in similar to the protagonist in Sinnoh, and remaining 10 years old in Unova has shown that he's just the "main character" now.

that I suppose i couldn't halp thinking how his AG outfit somehow resembled Brendan, though i suppose when I think about it, it's kind of a little vague at best... especially given Red being part of Gen III with a completely different look.

the part about his age reminds me of this little comic strip parodying it through Twilight... except replace Edward's head with Ash's and change the age to "14"... forgot where I saw it, though...
