Variety reports that Sony Pictures has engaged screenwriter James Vanderbilt to write Spider-Man 5 and Spider-Man 6.

Production on Spider-Man 4 will begin early next year for a May 6, 2011 release. Vanderbilt wrote the first draft of the script for the fourth installment. David Lindsay-Abaire was brought on board to do a rewrite, and Gary Ross is now rewriting that script.

The trade adds that director Sam Raimi didn't embrace all of Vanderbilt's ideas, but executives at Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios have. Vanderbilt has been hired to pen the fifth and sixth movies, which have an interconnected storyline.

It's unclear whether Raimi, Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst will be back for #5 & 6, but if they aren't, Vanderbilt's script would be the blueprint for a franchise reboot.

Admittedly, this isn't HUGE news. Not even big news. But it confirms the long-rumored plan for interconnected movies, and confirms the sixth movie (fifth had been confirmed, sixth was just speculated). And the idea of them possibly using 5 and 6 as a reboot is...intriguing. But I have a feeling it would do as well as the 90s Batman films past 3 and 4. Namely, make a bit of money, but be horribly cheesy.

Watch guys Spider Man 4 will be so bad they won't make anymore sequals

Why?

Because each film keeps getting worse like with Batman and Superman

While 5 and 6 being part of a reboot sounds like a good idea (assuming that's what happens), the whole franchise should be taking a long break before they do them. In fact, there shouldn't even be a 4 right now. Like Magmaster12 said, this will probably end up being another Batman and Superman situation.

I’m a little surprised that they are already planning as far ahead as the sixth movie, but it wouldn’t surprise me if Spider-Man 5 is the reboot movie. Four movies in a superhero movie franchise seem to be the limit.

-_-

These people never learn. If the director doesn't want to do it, it won't turn out well. Where were they for Spider-Man 3?

God, so over this movie franchise, and it hasn't even gotten to the truly bad movies. Just kill it already.

Why why why are they doing this?! ("The money!" I know, but jeez....!) The third wasn't all that great, so why would they want to do even more damage? Just put it to rest already.

You hit it on the head, Marv: these'll make money, but they'll probably stink out loud. For example--just look at Batman and Robin. :shudder:

Eh, I like spiderman, but really, it focuses to much on Peter and Mj instead of Spidey and villain(s). Spiderman 3 did pretty darn well. I look forward to sequels.

However, what villains are we getting? The games would look weird if Mysterio made an intro in two games.
