I didn't know if this was okay for this forum. If it's not, feel free to delete this thread. Anyways...

It looks like everyone is in favor of Nintendo. This pretty much shows that Sony has dug their own grave and won't be getting out of it anytime soon.

Odd, I thought EA and their horrible monopoly on lisences and their buying of smaller companies to force them into creating sure sellers rather than experimental, innovative games would've taken the lead. Sony has really fallen from grace, haven't they?

Indeed. With them pricing the PS3 from $600-1000 when it's obviously not worth that much, removing the PS2 components, and not having many companies making games for them, you have to wonder what the heck they're thinking.

It's a shame really. The PS3 is a really good machine plagued by some rather odd design choices, notably BluRay. I can't help but think that including BluRay on the PS3 was an act by Sony to sacrifice their market dominance in entertainment software in exchange for winning the format war. Had Sony stuck to DVDs like Microsoft, their pricing would have been as competitive as the Xbox 360's.

Well technically the Ps3 is worth more than 600 dollars, but to the average buyer they see that price tag and think Sony must be crazy.

Sony will get back into the game eventually, they are gonna have to pull some power plays to make that happen though.

We have a long ways to go, many things could happen in the coming years. Lets not totally count them out yet.

Many people believe that Sony is down for the count, and I'm one of them. They made one too many blunders and now they're paying for it. It would take a miracle for them to catch up with Nintendo and Microsoft.

PS3 = Nintendo 64 level of poor marketing and hardware design, without the good first party titles to save them.

It's just your standard "No company can be #1 for more than two gens in a row" rule.

Nintendo screwed up the N64 by not going with CD's, and now Sony has done the same thing with Bluray.

Its pretty ironic actually that Sony is experiencing the same thing now that Nintendo did with the N64. It really seems you can't remain #1 for more than two gens without screwing up.

I think the Xbox will become the new "Playstation" in terms of popularity, at least for this gen and next. Nintendo has managed to do extremely well with the Wii which is pretty much bringing the company back to the glory days of the SNES but I don't think the Wii will manage to overtake the 360, it will do well at #2.

Sony will probably end up #3 this gen unless something major happens down the road but it will still sell. After all the Gamecube was #3 last gen and it still sold well enough to survive the entire 5 year gap till the Wii.

I think the Wii has a lot of promise and can make it to #1. The only reason it isn't is because the Xbox 360 got a head start on this gen. A year or so from now and Nintendo will probably be in the lead.

As for Playstation 3, Sony shot themselves in the foot. They got too overconfident over their dominance with the Playstation 2 and, even though their Playstation Portable was a big flop, they thought they were invincible. So they decided to stuff all this unneeded crap into their precious Playstation 3 and put it on the market for a high price, thinking people would buy it for its "unparalled graphics." In fact, they still delude themselves into thinking that's still going work. Sony has failed to realize that graphics alone don't make a good game/console. It won't be long until they lose their exclusivity for games made by Square Enix, Rockstar Games, and such.

On a seperate note in Europe, Sony removed the PS2 components to save money, and they neglected to mention it when they first began selling. How many people do you think got pissed off when they found that out after they sold their PS2s to buy a PS3? From what I hear, Sony is also doing the same for the US, and I think that, no matter what they do, there is no way they'll be able to make a comeback, especially since they don't seem to be acknowledging their mistakes.

Sony just sucks, but that company doesn't suck as bad as EA. I can't really consider the PS3 a gaming system yet because there aren't any good PS3-exclusive titles. Sony was just trying to do too much with the PS3, which is what caused their own downfall.

Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) also kind of sucks, but I can't really say too much about it since I've only played 2 of their games. Biggest reason why I hate them right now, though, is that they pushed Vangaurd out too early. They even raised the monthly fee for Planetside, from like $12 per month to $15, with the release of Vangaurd.

Yeah, being in last place isn't so bad really. I mean, think of all the fun you had with the N64 and the GameCube; it suddenly doesn't really matter anymore. I'm sure everybody on this forum can attest to that (cough, Nintendo fanboys on a Pokemon site, cough :P).

We'll soon see that PS3 isn't a bad purchase sooner or later (provided there's a price cut of course ;D) because of Sony's first party intellectual properties alone. I mean, sure, you could do better and buy a 360 or a Wii, but the PS3 as it stands right now isn't going to be a 3DO or a Jaguar.

EA is a bunch of sneaky bastards, but they own Maxis, which I adore, so I cut them some slack.

EA aren't as bad as they used to be - but before even that they used to be genuinely appreciated and creative game developers. I hope that they can work their way back to that eventually.

The PS3 as a machine isn't really the problem (though the price and Blu-Ray certainly are big ones), Sony just has the PR capabilities of a wild bull in a figurative china shop.

Its funny because Nintendo and Rare pretty much carried the N64 all by themselves. The N64 had absolutely horrid third party support, something that was fixed with the Gamecube, and Nintendo made a profit on both systems, (along with GBC, GBA and the DS at the same time on the handheld side), so they could continue being at #3 and still be in the game. I'm also pretty sure that total GCN and Xbox NPD's aren't even that far apart, so its not like the Xbox left the GCN in the dust or anything.

I do see the PS3 taking the GCN's place this gen, but it'll probably sell overall better than the GCN did in its lifespan. The problem is all the big-name Sony exclusives are being brought over to the 360 and now pretty much only Final Fantasy and Metal Gear Solid 4 is left. Once those two are announced to appear on the 360 too, then that's it, Sony is screwed.

The problem we'll face now is Microsoft will be #1 in the videogame industry and they'll be no way to bring them down. As long as they don't monopolize the industry then I do see them becoming the new Playstation for the next couple of years while Nintendo continues to survive as a #2.

I do think we'll see a PS4, etc. 5 years from now but I severly doubt Sony will ever be able to become #1 again. Microsoft isn't going to let their hold fall and if Wii continues to be a success, we'll be looking at a very different videogame industry next gen, just as this gen is different than the last. (Who knew Sony would go from #1 to #3 in a single generation?)

my humble opinion about the companies

Nintendo: YES! YES! Heh, you're the man NOW dog!

Sony/Microsoft: *flips the bird*

Ehhh... I've never really seen what's so good about an Xbox. Halo is pretty much the biggest game for Xbox, and hell, Halo makes a better PC game than a console one. I guess I have a bit of prejudice against Microsoft as well.

They go and put those stupid "Games for Windows" labels on a bunch of PC games in an attempt to make PC games in general stand out more as games, but really they're just making it look like Microsoft is monopolizing the PC games industry as well, which they're definitely incapable of. I even heard Windows Vista is really unrefined and eats up a lot of RAM/processing power.

So all in all, Nintendo is the top entertainment company, in my opinion. They try to make electronic games fun and innovative for a large audience.

The 360 has Viva Pinata, Halo 3, the best version of Guitar Hero II, the best version of GTA IV (Exclusive episodic download content = Sony pwn'd), the best online system out of the three (Nintendo's online offerings are really... sad. They just cannot pull the online side together at all) and Xbox Live Arcade.

Not to mention XNA, which could very well end up like the gaming equivalent of YouTube (or at the very least, increase the quality and creativity of the homebrew scene above the Tetris Clone state it's in now).

The PS3 has the Second Life like Playstation Home, of course, but as enticing as that sounds, I think that overall most people would probably rather stick with what the 360 has to offer if they're not already deluded into buying a PS3 through fanboy bias.

Agreed, although I don't expect it to be called the "Playstation 4". I fully expect the "Playstation" name to be retired because of bad associations made with it due to the bad press of the PS3 and PSP, though.

...Gears of War, the better version of Ace Combat VI (jet dogfights over Xbox Live with leaderboards and achievements, zomg I just came), Dead Rising, Lost Planet, Mass Effect, Blue Dragon.

I hate to break it to you, but Microsoft unfortunately has monopolized the PC games market. How many games do you see on Mac OS X? How about Linux? Okay, now how about Windows? For PC games, everybody is using DirectX. It's been the standard application programming interface for PC games ever since the release of Windows 95. The entire industry buzzwords following the release of the new nVidia video cards has been "DirectX 10" and "Direct3D 10" which tells us a lot about the vice grip Microsoft has on PC gaming.

I even heard Windows Vista is really unrefined and eats up a lot of RAM/processing power.
Windows Vista actually loads programs faster because it pre-fetches and caches code for quick execution. A good operating system doesn't leave RAM laying around unused. When programs need the RAM, Vista quietly deallocates what it has used to make way for programs that need it.

DISCLAIMER: I'm also a Linux user.

I don't love Sony but I don't love any company. They all want our money and will do anything to get it. This is a Gamefaqs poll so it's not really a wide demographic they're polling.

I think the Sony hate is just that it's easy to rag on them by having an expensive game machine that's not selling as well as they'd like.
