Screenshots on the Bulbapedia HGSS page show the characters referring to the male sprite as "Soul-kun," and one of the captions which show the male and female sprites conversing is labeled "Gold and Soul in New Bark Town." My kanji reading skills aren't stellar, but I recognize enough to read most of the text:

Here, Professor Elm refers to the male as "Soul-kun" (the last 5 characters on the first line): So - ru - u - ku - n.

The caption for this picture, as well as it's URL, label the girl's name as "Gold."
(Source, pictures 7 and 9)

Now, personally I don't care so much, but I know it matters to a lot of other people -- what do you make of Soul being the boy, instead of the girl, and the girl taking on the name Gold?

Such things are nothing new; after all, the name "Red" is listed as a default for Leaf, and vice versa, in FRLG, and I think the same applied with the names "Gold" and "Chris/Kris" in Crystal. I'm guessing we're looking at a very similar principle here.

agreed.

Which confirms default names (since we all go by the names from Heart Gold) for Gold and Soul as being such.

Yeah, the names seem to be definitely Gold, Soul, and Silver as was expected.

No, I think he's jsut confused - Bulbapedia is fan-edited, and since the male character has been known as "Gold" since GSC, and the fans have agreed to call the girl "Soul" until her default name is revealed, those are the names Bulbapedia seems to be currently using (though they should really probably just say "the male and female PCs", to be accurate). We know that the screenshots refer to the male character as "Soul" (and that there is no screenshot calling the girl by name), but in talking about the characters on this site and Bulbapedia, "Gold" is always the boy, and "Soul" is always the girl.

And take note that even these screenshots don't say anything about what the characters' "official" names are - the use of "Soul" could just be for these demo pictures. We won't know for sure until the game is released and we can see the names of the player-characters' opposite-gender rivals (as with Brendan and May in RSE, and Lucas and Dawn in DPPt).

Lucas and Dawn were the only one used in nearly all of the default gameplay materials, though.

Sure. The file name on Bulbapedia is an official source which confirms that girl's name is Gold.

God, The Apocalypse commenced. Bulbapedia has become the source for itself... That's why it sucks lately.

No. Prior to the games' release, Lucas was shown in most of the screenshots under the name "Dia". In the game booklets, "Dia" was used for Diamond and "Pearl" for Pearl.

We only knew about "Hikari" from anime-related advertisements, guessing that that would be the NPC's name based on the precedent set by May.

Or, you know, they're avatars for you and are supposed to have your name... And all names like Red, Leaf, Gold are just defaults because they're version colours, and the other names are probably the names of head translator's children or something, and they don't have "official" names until the Special thing and that's only in that media.

But that's just my two cents.

Also, there's already one with the fan name "Gold."
Since she's a player character, I say she should get the name of the primary version.
Since we already have a Gold, I dub this one "Heart." It's more feminine anyway. :3

But they're not official in the game either! One, several screenshots reffered Kouki as "Dia" in Diamond and "Plato" in Platinum, same applied to Yuki in Emerald.

Two, "Gold" has been the default name for boy ever sinced the originals and "Soul" is a placeholder for the "newgirl" CREATED BY FANS. Three, there is NO GOLD in the screenshot, just "Soul". Fourth, the person got confused several people think Bulbapedia is fact WHEN ITS A FANCOMMUNITY ITSELF. Bulbapedia refers the guy as Gold and the "new" girl as "Soul, so the person got confused since the screenshot referred the guy as Soul and thought there was a Gold in the screenshot BECAUSE BULBAPEDIA SAID SO. >>

Sorry if that was a little harsh, but Bulbapedia=/=fact.

Yes, but those names in the booklets are for the player, not for the NPC, and the screenshot shows the girl as a NPC, because she doesn't have a starter (she has a Marill instead) and bfurthermore, she tells the boy to tell his mom that his leaving on an adventure, proving that she's a NPC there, and she's still referred as Gold. Therefore, she's got a name AS A NPC, and you yourself said it: the canon names are the ones given to the kids as NPC, not the ones from the preset names. And guess what? As a NPC, the girl is called Gold. So it is confirmed that, unles GF changes it in the last minute. the girl's canon name is Gold. Not that I like it, but it's been proved.

It matters very little to me; if Game Freak has the liberty to majorly change things from an aesthetic point of view (and even re-make these games in the first place) they can do what they want to the names, because I'll just end up calling them whatever I please anyway. I could call the girl "Chief Diamond Phillips" if I wanted to, haha.

Gold isn't the default name for the girl. >>

The "Gold" part was from a CAPTION from BULBAPEDIA which refers the guy as Gold not the GIRL. It refers the girl as Soul, but the actual official picture refers the guy as Soul and THERE IS NO NAME BEING SAID IN THE SCREENSHOT DJSFLJSLD.

The person got confused, and since people take Bulbapedia for fact, they read the caption, so they assumed that the girl was Gold.

Unless Bulbapedia is fact, which is not, it's NOT PROVEN. Also, look at any pre-release screenshots for DP and Plat, they refer Kouki as Dia/Plato.

Oddly enough, and not to deviate from the main topic, but I called my character in Platinum "Plato" simply because it sounded so bad-ass.

I think that even if they swapped the names, it won't be a big deal among the majority of fans(ok, I'm sure some will disagree with me, so scrap that comment if you disagree, too). How many people even name their character according to the canon/default names? Not me, at least. I don't even use the name "Link" as Link's name in any of my Zelda game save files (I still refer Link as Link).

I think this thread deserves to be closed or HoS'd.

Because it actually causes other people to speak bullshit. It's simply harmful to the users' brains!

It's generally a lame failed attempt to put up a discovery, using a Bulbapedia filename as the evidence.

I really feel very demotivated by the fact that ANYONE fell for that. It's just lame.

Please either close or HoS this thread. Any healthy discussion in such a failed thread is impossible.

OK. You're completely right, I didn't check myself the text from the pic, just trusted in wthat the OP said. SO OK, we're still with no name for the girl. But even then, that wrong source made me speak bullshit, which is very funny to me. So thanks, Maxim (and congratulations that for once, you're finally right).

Okay, I think people are starting to get confused.

One. You guys don't seem to realize default names SWITCH with the the second game. Always have. This is obviously Soul Silver being demoed. So, in case you guys can't wrap your heads around this, the guy's names is STILL Gold. Because the defaults always go off of the first game, which is Heart Gold.

Second, every translation of the scan shows the guy as Soul. Considering the above information, as of now the girl's official name is Soul, until such time as a new name is given. Following logic, the guy's name would be, guess what, gold. Or Heart but that's highly unlikely. Silver is, of course, still Silver.
