Screenshots on the Bulbapedia HGSS page show the characters referring to the male sprite as "Soul-kun," and one of the captions which show the male and female sprites conversing is labeled "Gold and Soul in New Bark Town." My kanji reading skills aren't stellar, but I recognize enough to read most of the text:
Here, Professor Elm refers to the male as "Soul-kun" (the last 5 characters on the first line): So - ru - u - ku - n.
The caption for this picture, as well as it's URL, label the girl's name as "Gold."
(Source, pictures 7 and 9)
Now, personally I don't care so much, but I know it matters to a lot of other people -- what do you make of Soul being the boy, instead of the girl, and the girl taking on the name Gold?
