Sparrow's Flight
A Fanfic I wrote... to pass the long lonely hours of the afternoon. The main character is Tom, a 12 year old kid who has just began his Pokemon Journey.
Chapter 1 - A New Day
The sun shone palely through Tom's window as his mother shook him gently awake.
"Honey, its 6 o'clock, remember that Oak wants you down at the Lab at 7 sharp."
"Mphh..." Tom replied through his pillow.
"Breakfast is ready, hurry down." His mother returned to their kitchen, leaving Tom lying in his bed. He sat up, tiredly rubbing the sleep from his eyes. He stumbled over to the dresser, pulling the clothes he would wear today from the top drawer. Walking to the bathroom, he washed his face and brushed his teeth. He pulled on a pair of tan shorts, a grey shirt, his sneakers, and a yellow baseball cap. Worn backwards.
The warm scent of bacon and scrambled eggs beckoned him downstairs, and he skipped down into the kitchen. He immediately busied himself with inhaling his breakfast, and it wasn't until 6:45 that he remembered what today was. The day he started his Pokemon Journey. The day his life began. When he would leave familiarity behind and venture out into the unknown excitement of Kanto.
"Mom, where is my backpack? I have to be down there in 15 minutes."
"Right here, honey." His mother appeared, carrying his backpack. "I've given you a Potion, it ought to help some on your new journey."
He accepted the backpack, and slung it over his shoulder.
"Well, this is it. I'll check in when I get a chance." He knew even as he said it that he would not be getting many of those chances on his quest.
"My little boy, what a man he is now." His mother returned, getting teary eyed.
"Count on your mom to get all mushy and sentimental at the last second." He said, rather sarcastically. He smiled, and brushed by her out the door.
"Bye" he waved, his mother waved back.
And he was off. Tom tore down the dirt path, backpack bouncing jubilantly on his back. He rounded the corner, and took off down the hill. Oak's Lab was visible in the distance. He slowed to a walk, and entered Prof. Oak's Lab. It was an acclaimed establishment, and he wanted to show proper respect when he appeared.
"Hello," he said to one of the Aides, "I'm here for my first Pokemon. Can you show me where to find Professor Oak please?" The Aide turned to him, and smiled broadly. He clapped his hand on Tom's shoulder,
"Ah, one of the youngsters. Excited for your big day?" Tom nodded embarrassedly. The friendly man led him down a hall and opened a non-descript door.
"Oak? A boy to see you"
"Yes? Well, let him in." Tom walked nervously into the room; the Aide closed the door behind him. Oak looked up from his oaken desk, a smile bloomed on his mouth.
"Tom, is it? Yes, I've talked with your school teachers. It appears you have an affinity for Pokemon. You remind me of myself, in fact. But enough with that, you're here to get a Pokemon." Tom nodded feebly.
"Well, right this way." Oak led the way back out of his office and continued down the hall. They entered another room, this one with a single table in the center. A guy could get lost in here, Tom thought.
"Now, there are three Pokemon here. Squirtle, an aquatic turtle Pokemon, Charmander, a fiery lizard Pokemon, and Bulbasaur, a Grass-type Pokemon with a bulb on it's back. You're free to choose whichever one you please. Don't be bashful, go ahead."
Tom hesitantly approached the table. He held his hand first over the Charmander. Then, changing his mind, selected the Bulbasaur.
"You want the Bulbasaur then?" Oak asked.
"Yeah, yeah I do, Sir." Oak chuckled at this.
"You don't have to call me Sir, Tom, Prof. Oak will suffice. Now, do you wish to give a nickname to your Bulbasaur?"
"Yes, Prof. Oak, I do. I think I will call him Amicus." He went on to explain, "It's Latin, you see... for "friend". Something I hope me and Bulbasaur can become."
"Ah, of course. Now, if you will come back with me to my office, I have something for you."
They returned to Oak's office, and Oak opened a drawer of his desk. He placed on the desk some electronic gadget.
"This is called a Pokedex, it automatically records every Pokemon you have seen or own. It was once my dream to create a full encyclopedia of every Pokemon known to man. But alas, I
am too old now. I place this burden on you know, and my son... Gary."
Tom's eyes widened. Prof. Oak entrusting me with a quest so important! This is amazing! He was disheartened, but he quickly steeled himself.
"I'll do the best that I can, Prof. Oak, Sir."
"That's all I'm asking Tom, now. Off with you. And good luck. You can contact me through the PC if you wish to stay in tough."
"I will Prof. Oak, and thank you!"
With that, Tom departed Oak's lab. He strode down the steps to the dust path. The long shadows of morning stretched into the distance, and the hills curled over each other in the distance, like waves in the sea. He took a step, and a journey of a thousand miles began.
