Sparrow's Flight

A Fanfic I wrote... to pass the long lonely hours of the afternoon. The main character is Tom, a 12 year old kid who has just began his Pokemon Journey.

Chapter 1 - A New Day

The sun shone palely through Tom's window as his mother shook him gently awake.
"Honey, its 6 o'clock, remember that Oak wants you down at the Lab at 7 sharp."
"Mphh..." Tom replied through his pillow.

"Breakfast is ready, hurry down." His mother returned to their kitchen, leaving Tom lying in his bed. He sat up, tiredly rubbing the sleep from his eyes. He stumbled over to the dresser, pulling the clothes he would wear today from the top drawer. Walking to the bathroom, he washed his face and brushed his teeth. He pulled on a pair of tan shorts, a grey shirt, his sneakers, and a yellow baseball cap. Worn backwards.

The warm scent of bacon and scrambled eggs beckoned him downstairs, and he skipped down into the kitchen. He immediately busied himself with inhaling his breakfast, and it wasn't until 6:45 that he remembered what today was. The day he started his Pokemon Journey. The day his life began. When he would leave familiarity behind and venture out into the unknown excitement of Kanto.

"Mom, where is my backpack? I have to be down there in 15 minutes."

"Right here, honey." His mother appeared, carrying his backpack. "I've given you a Potion, it ought to help some on your new journey."

He accepted the backpack, and slung it over his shoulder.

"Well, this is it. I'll check in when I get a chance." He knew even as he said it that he would not be getting many of those chances on his quest.

"My little boy, what a man he is now." His mother returned, getting teary eyed.

"Count on your mom to get all mushy and sentimental at the last second." He said, rather sarcastically. He smiled, and brushed by her out the door.

"Bye" he waved, his mother waved back.

And he was off. Tom tore down the dirt path, backpack bouncing jubilantly on his back. He rounded the corner, and took off down the hill. Oak's Lab was visible in the distance. He slowed to a walk, and entered Prof. Oak's Lab. It was an acclaimed establishment, and he wanted to show proper respect when he appeared.

"Hello," he said to one of the Aides, "I'm here for my first Pokemon. Can you show me where to find Professor Oak please?" The Aide turned to him, and smiled broadly. He clapped his hand on Tom's shoulder,

"Ah, one of the youngsters. Excited for your big day?" Tom nodded embarrassedly. The friendly man led him down a hall and opened a non-descript door.

"Oak? A boy to see you"

"Yes? Well, let him in." Tom walked nervously into the room; the Aide closed the door behind him. Oak looked up from his oaken desk, a smile bloomed on his mouth.

"Tom, is it? Yes, I've talked with your school teachers. It appears you have an affinity for Pokemon. You remind me of myself, in fact. But enough with that, you're here to get a Pokemon." Tom nodded feebly.

"Well, right this way." Oak led the way back out of his office and continued down the hall. They entered another room, this one with a single table in the center. A guy could get lost in here, Tom thought.

"Now, there are three Pokemon here. Squirtle, an aquatic turtle Pokemon, Charmander, a fiery lizard Pokemon, and Bulbasaur, a Grass-type Pokemon with a bulb on it's back. You're free to choose whichever one you please. Don't be bashful, go ahead."

Tom hesitantly approached the table. He held his hand first over the Charmander. Then, changing his mind, selected the Bulbasaur.

"You want the Bulbasaur then?" Oak asked.

"Yeah, yeah I do, Sir." Oak chuckled at this.

"You don't have to call me Sir, Tom, Prof. Oak will suffice. Now, do you wish to give a nickname to your Bulbasaur?"

"Yes, Prof. Oak, I do. I think I will call him Amicus." He went on to explain, "It's Latin, you see... for "friend". Something I hope me and Bulbasaur can become."

"Ah, of course. Now, if you will come back with me to my office, I have something for you."
They returned to Oak's office, and Oak opened a drawer of his desk. He placed on the desk some electronic gadget.

"This is called a Pokedex, it automatically records every Pokemon you have seen or own. It was once my dream to create a full encyclopedia of every Pokemon known to man. But alas, I
am too old now. I place this burden on you know, and my son... Gary."

Tom's eyes widened. Prof. Oak entrusting me with a quest so important! This is amazing! He was disheartened, but he quickly steeled himself.

"I'll do the best that I can, Prof. Oak, Sir."

"That's all I'm asking Tom, now. Off with you. And good luck. You can contact me through the PC if you wish to stay in tough."

"I will Prof. Oak, and thank you!"

With that, Tom departed Oak's lab. He strode down the steps to the dust path. The long shadows of morning stretched into the distance, and the hills curled over each other in the distance, like waves in the sea. He took a step, and a journey of a thousand miles began.

It's kinda hard to read. You're supposed to stat a new paragraph every time the time, place, subject, or speaker changes. Don't post your story in one gigantic clump, or a few smaller clumps.

Well, I tried to... But the formatting on these forums is weird. It won't let me use the "Tab" key. Or, it doesn't show up on the page... I guess I could just leave a space between people talking...

Use the 'Enter' key. Also, it's better if you type it in something like MS Word first, and then post it.

Edit: Thanks. It's much easier to read, and it's an excellent story. I hope you write more of it.

Well, I did... but the formatting didn't carry over...? Whatever.

Chapter Two - Making New Friends

The way was easy and time passed quickly as he made his way out of Pallet Town. The sun shone steadily as it continued its arc across the sky, and nary a cloud disrupted its light. It was noon when Tom stopped for lunch.

"Amicus, come on out."

There was a flash of white light and Bulbasaur appeared.

"So, Amicus, I'm your trainer. I hope we can become friends."

He extended his hand, and the Bulbasaur stepped forward cautiously. Amicus suspiciously sniffed the offered hand; then licked it. Tom laughed at the unexpected gesture of amenity.

"Well, I guess you agree."

Bulbasaur shuffled over to Tom's backpack, which he had propped up against a rock. The Grass Pokemon sniffed around, then started nibbling the corner of the backpack,
and pulling it over to Tom.

"Hey! What are you doing?"

Tom rushed to the aide of his backpack. Amicus looked expectantly up at him.

"Wha...? Oh! Poke food, right!"

He fished through the backpack, coming up with a container of Poke food. He popped off the lid, and fed Bulbasaur two pellets. Amicus contentedly munched the food.

"That better?" Tom asked, Bulbasaur grumbled in the affirmative.

They continued traveling as the shadows lengthened, and the winds took on a nipper character. Suddenly a Rattata leapt from the bushes at the side of the road. Tom stepped backwards quickly.

"Woah!" he exclaimed, then, remembering his Pokemon, "Oh, go Amicus!" He hurled the Pokeball, and Bulbasaur materialized in front of him.

"Tackle attack!"

Bulbasaur raced forwards, colliding squarely with the Rat Pokemons side. It was forced backwards, but raced forwards again. It used it's own Tackle attack.

"Amicus! Roll with the attack!" commanded Tom.

Bulbasaurs legs buckled, and Rattata forced Bulbasaur over. Bulbasaur, taking the energy of the attack, flipped right side up again.

"Good job!" Bulbasaur looked cheerfully back at him, "Now, finish it! Tackle attack!"

Bulbasaur sped forward again, smashing Rattata off the path and back into the bushes.

"Excellent! Now, return." Bulbasaur was enveloped in a red aura, than returned to the Pokeball.

Tom walked the last half-mile to Viridian City, where he entered the PokeCenter.
"Hello? Nurse Joy?" She appeared in front of him.

"I would appreciate it if you would heal my Pokemon, we ran into some trouble---"

"Say no more! We'll make him fighting fit! Just leave your Pokeball here, and check back in awhile."

"Thank you, Nurse; I'll be back in awhile."

Tom returned to the lobby of the center, where he received a bowl of steaming soup. He walked to a booth with his food, and set in readily.

Great! You're a pretty good writer, especially for your first fic. I'm glad that before you were mature, and corrected your mistake, unlike I've found some people to do, even after things like that have been noted. Anyway, I've got one question, though. With the Rattata, you said he hurled the Poke Ball, and Bulbasaur materialized in front of him. Did he ever call it back?

Chapter Three - Making More Friends

Tom stayed at the PokeCenter that night. He woke to the sound of snores, Bulbasaur was laying spread eagle on his chest.

"Gerrof' of me."

He said, shoving Bulbasaur onto the floor. Amicus fell right on its face, and turned over slowly. He crawled to his feet, blinking slowly.

"Return, Amicus." Tom placed the Pokeball on his belt, and pulled his tee over his head.

He stretched, yawning indulgently. He dressed slowly, than walked out to the soup kitchen. He acquired a meal and returned to the booth he had been at last night to eat.

When he had finished he set off again, always on the move. The journey continued uneventfully for a good while. He released Bulbasaur to walk with him, and Amicus was glad for the escape from the confines of the Pokeball.

Then Tom spotted a group of Spearows roosting in a tree to the side of the road.

"Amicus, do you think you could use Leech Seed to capture one of those birds for me?"

Amicus looked over, surveying the area. He nodded confidently, and released a small brown seed from the bulb on his back. It arced through the air, impacting solidly with the Spearow sitting on the topmost branch. The Spearow cried out in surprise as the vines entwined its body.

"Yeah! Great shot, Amicus!"

Tom raced off into the bushes, shoving briars out of his way as he made his way to where the Spearow had landed. He soon came upon it, struggling in its trap.

"Go, Pokeball!" He threw a ball at the panicking bird, the ball rolled, back and forth. Then opened up again, releasing the Spearow.

"Oh! Didn't work; Amicus! Tackle the Spearow to weaken it!"

Bulbasaur charged out from behind him, knocking the Spearow back into the trunk of a tree. The Flying Pokemon slid down to the ground, and then lay motionless. This time it stayed in the Ball.

"I think I'll call it Kazu, what do you think, Amicus?" Amicus glanced up, than shrugged nonchalantly.

"It's decided then."

He grasped the Pokeball, and, throwing it into the air, released Kazu.

"Come on down, Kazu. Let's get a good look at you." The Spearow was a little larger than usual, and had a number of scars on its face.

"Looks like you were quite the scrapper in your flock..." Kazu looked back fiercely.
Just then a Rattata leapt from the grass near them.

"Well, let's see what you can do! Kazu, use Peck attack!"

Spearow descended quickly on the Rat Pokemon, hitting it directly with the point of its beak. The Rattata was knocked back, but quickly regained its footing. It came rushing back with a Tackle attack.

"Kazu! Try to dodge it!"

Kazu flipped through the air, and Rattata shot by it. Kazu spun and ripped through the sky towards the airborne Rat. It used a ferocious Wing Attack that sent the Rattata spiraling through the air to impact the ground a distance away.

"Wow, nice attack... Not what I said, but. Alright."
