Speed Gamers want to catch every Pokémon: Bloggers to fundraise for autism charity

The Speed Gamers, a group of video game enthusiasts who play for marathon hours to raise money for charities, have announced they will attempt to capture every Pokémon available in North America during 72 straight hours beginning 5 p.m. CST Dec. 19. The gamers will donate proceeds raised during the fundraiser to ACT Today, a nonprofit supporter of people affected by autism.

I'm so glad the "charity" isn't Autism Speaks. They're idiots who want to wipe out autism and every single one of them ISN'T autistic. They don't even let autistic people *work* for them--so really, who's really "speaking"?

Anyway, ACT sounds far more reasonable. And speed gaming *and* Pokémon sounds like a winning combination for something like this.

This is awesome. I'd be very interested to watch, although I doubt I'll have time to. I'm especially interested in the idea of all of them working separately, but then bringing all the critters together on one cartridge at the end; they're certainly going to have to syngergize well with each other to get everything done in 72 hours--work together, even though they're working separately. I mean, people interacting like that is what Pokémon is all about.

Why the fuck was there a need to add the part about some wacky charity that believes autism doesn't exist?

I think they were commenting on your first post, Blackjack.

This sounds great! I wonder though how are they going to get the event pokemon like Deoxys, Celebi, and I think one more. How much help will they be able to get? And transfering to one cart must be on a constant basis, and they have to have several DP carts to do this. Anyone know how many people are helping out with this?

Well since I wasn't timed and it took me about a week to complete my dex, i'm wondering how amazing this achievment atualy is. Especialy with multiple people working at it.

Still, pretty damn awesome ^^

It says "available in North America". That disqualifies Mew, Celebi, Deoxys, Darkrai and Arceus.

It's kind of strange though, they have to trade anyways to complete a pokedex, so they might as well trade for legendaries too. I think they just were referring to no Arceus or Shaymin.

It seems they are going to try to get all 491 Pokémon that have been revealed to North America. This is every Pokémon except Shaymin and Arceus (duh). I don't think they took into consideration that some legendaries are not available inherently in any game, so I don't think they will end up with Darkrai, Deoxys, and Celebi (Mew is in Ranch).

Now that's cool. What a clever way to raise funds. I wonder if they'll be able to do it all in the allotted time? And will they turn to the GTS for impossible-to-find critters like Feebas?

Nope; according to their website "all pokemon must be attained within our house (no trades will be made from outsiders)."

They'll be playing every game since Ruby and Sapphire released on the GameBoy Advance and DS (including Rangers 1 & 2), as well as Gale of Darkness, Colliseum (including bonus disks), and Ranch.

Depending on how many people are actually involved in this, I guess for something like Feebas they'll all search at the same time.

w00t. With all the good benifits that all the other disability-awareness raising people get, it's good to see that people still care for us autistic folk. Not only that, it's Pokemon too. That's awesome.

Now that is some interesting hardcore gamer stick! Very impressive!

Good luck to the guys doing this, very cool idea for a chairty. :3

This, I believe, is a wonderful idea for charity. Unfortunately, however, there's a chance they may not get Mew... For, you see, it takes a week to get Hayley to allow all 1,000 Pokémon required, and that's if you fill up the Ranch to its limit everyday until then. With completely restarted games, it'd be hard to pump out 1,000 Pokémon (but possible), but still, it'd have to take a week, and they have three days. That is, unless, they don't restart Ranch. Or hack.

That is an insane idea. And as for ranch, they could just advance the date on the Wii ahead so that it skips to the next day.

The ONLY rule they have is that they will not trade with anyone else. Changing the clocks on their systems is perfectly fine. In fact, using different language versions is probably OK, too. Using Colosseum with the Japanese bonus disk, one can obtain a Celebi by beating the game. Also, tweaking or the surf glitch can be used to capture Darkrai or even Shaymin. Deoxys and Arceus are the two Pokémon they are leaving out, not Shaymin and Arceus. Also, when they say every Pokémon legitimately possible, they mean that they will not use a GameShark. They never said they wouldn't use glitches! :)

Yeah, with all the bonus discs, pokemon ranch, and pokemon ranger 2, they could get everything except shaymin and arceus. Do you think they'll use ranger 2?
