I've always wondered, in the show, does the speed stat matter at all? I havent watched any episodes in a while but it seems like the trainers always take turns giving their commands.

Recently in the Ash vs Paul episode it was mentioned that Weavile was faster then Starapdor but I doubt stats are important seeing that all kinds of stupid happens in the anime.

I think speed is generally represented in the anime as movement speed and general agility, but sometimes they point out that a certain pokemon got off it's attack first because it's faster.

Clod is right. One needs to look no further than the severe agility drop Ash's Turtwig suffered when it evolved. And in the anime universe, in relative terms, some Pokemon are simply known to be faster/more agile than most others. Brock commented as much about Candice's Sneasel.

Pokemon that have lower speed stats in the games are usually relatively sedentary (they don't move around much) during battles in the anime as well. Ash's Snorlax and Torkoal are good examples.

It's kinda weird how they portrayed Turtwig in general as fast... Seeing that it's actual base speed is only 31 and it's lowest stat, and it's a turtle.

But I guess they made it so that the speed drop upon evolution would be more dramatic.

There's also a tendancy for the anime to portray fast Pokémon as better since it makes for more exciting battles. Few people want to watch someone just absorb hits, they want to see acrobatics and near-hits while keeping up vollies of shots at the opponent.

Speed is different in the show and video games. In the show, speed is how well a Pokemon can dodge attacks. In the games, speed is used to show who makes the first move.

At least that's how I see it.

Didn't Turtwig run on the side of a wall in one Gym battle? Can't remember if that was during Roark or Wake.

@Scott: I believe that one was Wake.

Speed does get the occasional misportrayal in the anime with certain Pokemon, mainly Scizor. It's supposed to be slower than Scyther, but more durable, yet it seems to have just as much blinding speed as its pre-evolved form.

I know a lot of people argue games=/=anime, but if you ask me, the base stats portrayed in the games tend to make a lot of sense. Some people think that evolved Pokemon should be slower than their previous forms, but no... I think the games got it right. They may be larger and heavier, but they also tend to have longer legs and thus can cover more ground easily. That said, a Pokemon like Naetle should just tot around with stumpy legs, only rushing forward to use moves like Tackle or whatever, whilst Hayashigame would actually be an improvement.

still having access to Agility and Quick Attack might help in that regard.

Remember, people, the writers are essentially God when it comes to the anime. They can make it as close to the games as possible, or as (PIKACHU! AIM FOR TEH HORN!!!1!) different from the (MUNCHLAX! GIGA IMPACT!!) games as they like.
