I keep running into this rumor today, so I figure I'll post it and see what others think:

Source.

El Mayimbe here with a HUGE SCOOP to start off the week.

It seems like Spider Man 4 and 5 is going full steam ahead.

Over the Holiday weekend, Kellvin got a tip from a trusted source as to whom may be the next Peter Parker/Spider Man in the upcoming films. Because my batting average has been pretty good lately, Kelvin and I decided to sit on it until Hollywood went back to work today and I can get more concrete info. This morning, I made some calls to my guys, fished around and here is what I managed to find out.

Laura Ziskin and Grant Curtis are tossing names around. NO OFFERS HAVE BEEN YET. That being said, the name at the top of their list to replace Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker/Spiderman is…

…PATRICK FUGIT.

You may recognize Patrick from SPUN, WRISTCUTTERS and his breakout performance in ALMOST FAMOUS.

My personal thoughts? Fugit looks like Peter Parker to me.

I also managed to find out that if Fugit doesn’t work out, the Spiderman producers ARE EVEN WILLING TO GO YOUNGER.

Who is the name on that list?

MICHAEL ANGARANO

Michael actually played a superhero in SKY HIGH and was most recently seen FORBIDDEN KINGDOM. Michael even auditioned for the postponed Justice League film.

You know that Fugit and Angarano played the same character in ALMOST FAMOUS? Angarano played the younger version of William in ALMOST FAMOUS while Fugit played the older version.

So what do guys think?

Stay tuned as more develops.

Source has pictures of the actors.

There's been talk since before Spider-Man 3 came out that Dunst, Raimi, and Maguire might not be around for another trilogy. And another rumor recently came out that mentioned 4 and 5 might be shot back-to-back, with the two films sharing an overall storyline. This IS just a rumor for now, but the idea of them recasting the roles in order to carry on an extremely successful franchise DOES make sense. Big questions are whether this will pan out, how many actors will be replaced, and if Raimi will be onboard at all.

Patrick Fugit is adorable. Angarano creeps me out for some reason.

I can see Angarano playing Peter Parker, especially if it takes place in high school or college years (Making it a prequel).

.. but I don't think it's that weird to recast. Batman did it, Superman Did it (kind-of), and for non-comic book stuff, Bond does it repeatedly. That said, I'd prefer it if they didn't.

I heard that spider man 3 was going to be Maguire's last ages ago (Although it may have still been a rumour). He was a really good Peter Parker.

How can it be a prequel if he only got his powers in Spiderman 1? Unless its one of those films that take place in between other films.

I personally think that making too many movies ruins a franchise, but recasting might work out well in this case.

Disclaimer: I am not sure exactly what I'm saying, all I know is that I say things.

McGuire was too depressing and angsty. Spider-Man can be a tragic figure but they need someone who can do the lighter side of the character, too. Although that's at least partially writing, I'm sure. I don't want camp. I'd just like his smart-ass side to be played up a bit more.

THANK YOU. Thought I was the only one who felt disappointed by him. Always stopped me from really enjoying the films.

I didn't care for him in the movies but I was happy for Spidey movies so I overlooked it.

Anyways, if they make more I don't care who plays him as long as they keep him in character.

There's been an update in the story:

Sony Pictures representatives deny this week’s Big Internet Rumor that the studio is considering a replacement for Tobey Maguire in Spider-Man 4.

According to IESB, some websites were even asked to remove the link to the original story, reported by Latino Review. IESB quotes Sony’s Steve Elzer as saying the rumor is false, and that, “No one is being considered for the role but Tobey. Period.”

So either this means they'll only use Maguire, or they're just trying to suck up to him to get him to come back (note that the original story mentioned they were considering the other actors in case he didn't come back). Should be interesting to see how this pans out. Whether the initial rumor ends up just being another rumor tossed to the side, or if's the basis of a future change in casting.

It sounds like they want Tobey but are considering other actors in case he drops out but don't want him to know that.

What they should do is cast a new actor as Parker, reboot the movie franchise and make it part of the same extended universe we're now seeing in the rest of Marvel's big hitter movies. Unless of course, they could do that with the setup they have now - but I kinda doubt that. The movie Spider-man was just not Spider-man enough for me. Watching Iron Man, with his quips as he kicks the crap out of his enemies, just emphasised that fact further.

I've always felt since before Spidey 3, when it was made pretty clear that Dunst, McGuire and Raimi had no intention of returning to the series, that if they wished to continue the movies it should be rebooted and have Ultimate stuck at the front of it.

I don't see how it doesn't work with the rest of the franchises. It's not like you always see him running into other heroes in any of the comics (Ultimate, regular, etc.) or the cartoons. He just does it occasionally (well...except for Marvel Team-Up and Ultimate Marvel Team-Up...). Only difference between Spider-Man and Iron Man is that Nick Fury popped up at the end of Iron Man and told him that there were other heroes (told, hinted at, whatever). Not like anyone ever said "you know, Spider-Man, you're the only hero in the world."

If nothing else, they could always do for Spider-Man what they're doing for Hulk. Recast, alter the characterization, but keep what already happened. I keep hearing the term "requel".

The difference with the Hulk and Spider-man though is that people are looking for any excuse to ignore and forget the original movie. :p The Spider-man movies are really rather well received, even the third one - though not to anywhere near the level of the other 2.
