Paving the way for the production and release of its multi-character superhero film, THE AVENGERS, Marvel Entertainment, Inc. (NYSE: MVL), announced today an adjusted release pipeline for its self-produced feature film properties that reflects the first time individual Super Hero characters and story arcs will be inter-woven and culminate in a multi-character motion picture. Separately, Marvel Studios confirmed today that Sony Pictures Entertainment will release SPIDER-MAN 4 on May 6, 2011. Additionally, Marvel Studios has revised the release dates for THOR and CAPTAIN AMERICA as part of its release strategy for an uninterrupted road to THE AVENGERS, now debuting May 4, 2012.

A Marvel character-based film will now launch the summer box office season for three years in a row, from 2010 through 2012.

“This new schedule strongly sequences Marvel’s movie debut dates, big screen character introductions and momentum. It maximizes the visibility of our single character-focused films, leading to the highly anticipated release of the multi-character THE AVENGERS film in 2012,” said David Maisel, Chairman, Marvel Studios.

Sony Pictures’ and Marvel Studios’ SPIDER-MAN 4 is slated for May 6, 2011. To date, all three motion pictures in the phenomenally successful SPIDER-MAN franchise have generated nearly $2.5 billion worldwide theatrically.

Below is Marvel Studios’ 2010-2012 updated release schedule for its slate of self-produced and financed feature films:

Marvel Studios Feature Film Pipeline
Film/Character - Prior Release Date - Current Release Date
IRON MAN 2 - May 7, 2010 - May 7, 2010
THOR - July 16, 2010 - June 17, 2011
THE FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA - May 6, 2011 - July 22, 2011
THE AVENGERS - July 15, 2011 - May 4, 2012

The release date for IRON MAN 2 remains unchanged. IRON MAN 2 is the sequel to the blockbuster film, IRON MAN, which has grossed nearly $600 million worldwide.

I'm not too surprised to see this change. Was really pushing it to get 4 films in 2 years. I'm thinking this will also make shooting easier on whoever gets cast as Captain America. Plus, hey, Spider-Man 4 release date.

I don't know about this whole "Avengers film" thing. I don't want them to force out movies just so they have one for each Avenger if it means the movies aren't going to be good. We're doing OK so far; Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, and Spider-Man 3 were all awesome, but I can't help but worry about Captain America and Thor, heroes who have so far failed to inspire much in me. Oh well, I guess we'll see.

I hope this means they're shifting more money towards Iron Man 2 - cos if they don't, it doesn't sound likely that they'll even have half the characters cast by the time of shooting...

Ew, Spider-Man 4's getting closer and closer. 3 was... not so great, and I really have no idea where they can go with the story from here on out. Lizard, Kraven, whoever, they just don't feel like they can carry a movie. And I'm absolutely disgusted with Maguire and Dunst at this point. I'd love for the next one to be good, but right now it doesn't look like it will be.

Still wondering how exactly they're going to do Thor.

Why wouldn't they give Iron Man 2 a generous budget? It was huge last year. Grossed over half a billion dollars. And the budget can't be TOO low. They already have Don Cheadle, Robert Downey Jr., Samuel L. Jackson (in...at least a minor role), and now Mickey Rourke and Scarlet Johansson. Plus there's still the Sam Rockwell rumor.

Early rumors talked about it being like the Tales of Asgard backup stories from the 60s-70s. Focus the majority of the plot on Asgard and make it like the comic book Lord of the Rings. Big, epic, and grand.

Thanks for the updated release dates for the upcoming Marvel Movies, GrnMarvel13.

I heard rumors since last year that Spider-Man 4 was coming out in 2011, but now we have an actual release date. I hope it's good because the third movie was a BIG let down for me (a big problem was the handling of Venom, my all-time favorite Spidey villain. It wasn't the only problem I had with that movie, but it was a factor).

I've been looking forward to Captain America for a while and hope it turns out to be good, especially if most of the film is set during World War II and I'm sure that'll be the case.

I'm a little sad to hear that Avengers won't be until 2012 now, but can't do much about that.

I have had my doubts of how good Thor would be, but if it will be like the old Tales of Asgard stories, than I'm sure the Thor movie will be EPIC.

So we now know the release date for Spider-Man 4. I'm really hoping that the studio will use this time well; I liked Spider-Man 3, but it felt like a bit of a letdown compared to the previous films.

I'll wait and see on Thor. It could be awesomely epic, or it could be awesomely bad. I'll wait until we have more info before I make the final judgment call.
