So, does anyone know how progress is going? Or even if anyone's planning on doing it this time?

From what I hear, the sprites are encrypted or coded strangely, so it's rather difficult to rip them out.

It might be a long time before we get them.

The guy who ripped the mini-sprites said it was EXTREMELY HARD, and it would take like months to finish.

I guess game freak/nintendo dose not like the fact us fans are useing their hard work on are sites, so they made the Sprits hard to rip... however I have run acrossed a site that has some D/P pokemon Sprits however they may be fan maded however... http://www.pokesho.com/icone7.html

Yeah, Pokesho makes their own stuff. That's pretty common knowledge.

PokéSho is a fanart site.

Nintendo supports Pokémon Elite 2000, and it has a sprite resource. In fact, they send the webmaster to events, and send him movies and games to review before the release.

Which means we may not have sprites till the US version comes out!

Archaic, if you're talking about me, I haven't been sent anything or given any official credentials by Nintendo.

I don't think so.
They don't send sprites to anyone and they have never done it before. What Nintendo gives out are artworks and some captured screenshot. That's what the press gets and also some supported Pokémon fan sites.

That is correct.

However, I have cracked the encryption on 50% of the pixels in a given sprite file. There are some refinements we need to make to recover the encryption key properly for all sprites (currently less than a dozen require a little more work).

Thanks must also be given to Eevee, who first spotted the existence of a pattern in those 50% of pixels, and to pika, who has been answering my many questions.

I do not know if any progress has been made on cracking the other 50% of pixels... in the meantime, here's something to whet your appetite.

Does the game save two seperate spirtes for gender variation, or does it "piece together" the monster on screen by using a main body sprite then adding the differences according to gender value?

There are usually, but not always (i.e. single-gender and no-gender Pokémon), four sprite files for each Pokémon - two front views and two back views. Within each file there are two frames for the animation of a particular sprite... usually the case for front views, but back views may only have one frame.

Also... not all gendered Pokémon have differing sprites. For instance, Bulbasaur male and female look the same.

I'm sure some skilled spriters would be able to take those 50% versions and compare them to the game (as long as the half versions have all the colors) and fill in the blanks. This would probably be hard for animations though, and it'd take a helluva lot of time, assuming that the other 50% can be found faster. Any word on trainer ripping?

We doesn't someone just recreate them? You don't need direct rips, if someone is talented enough to "trace over" them that will do.

Yeah, why don't they just do that? I guess there might be one or two that can't, but for the most, I'm sure.

I would imagine ripping the sprites would take a lot less effort, no matter how difficult it is, than someone having to trace over and redraw what is effectively over a thousand images.

Uh, yeah, that might be a refreshing break from trying to break our heads over the remaining 50% of pixels.

On the other hand, what if it's exactly the same encryption format?

Hm. Apparently, it is.

Of course, if by trainer ripping you mean trainer Pokémon and such... well, I guess we could start looking into that if we give up on the sprites.
