Sprites-Will they cheap out?

In the original GS, gamers were treated to different sprites for each game. This obviously was alot of work. This has never been repeated in either G3 or G4.

For FRed and LGreen, most of the sprites for the pokemon existing in that era were not redone to be correct to the original Red and Green poses.

What's the likelyness of this happening again?

I'm divided. while I like seeing new poses for sprites (some of them not so good) I do somewhat want to see updated sprites in the same position as they were in GS. However, that means once more that they'd need two sets of sprites (not to mention animations) So, I think it won't be version exclusive sprites, but the ones from Gold. Although I liked Silver better.

I don't think it's so much a matter of "cheaping out" as it is how complex the Pokemon sprites are- there's a difference between the 16 bit sprites of Gens 1 and 2 and the full color, shaded sprites of 3 and 4 (not to mention more Pokemon now). It's just a lot of work now to make a sprite and Game Freak isn't going to spend development time making all those sprites. We're at 493 Pokemon now, with formes taking that up to over 500 different sprites. I know Game Freak's not planning on making 1000+ sprites for HGSS just so each version will have different ones.

Plus, not only the things Nekusagi mentioned, they also have to add gender differences. Animating 1000+ would be painful for GameFreak as well. Different sprites means different animations as well. If they really do make version exclusive sprites, good luck to you,GameFreak.

I'll trade different sprites for any of 493 pokemon following me any day.

Really?

I find the idea of having your lead pokemon follow you as kinda cool. I'ld rather have that than sprite differences between versions. Considering that they are now going to be animated it won't make much difference.

I much more want to see the utter humour of a wailord or groudon following me than having to choose between G or S's sprite poses.

Well, looking at the NEP/PCP in the Pokemon sunday video, it shows a wifi battle, and I am pretty sure the igglybuff/marril back sprites are new.

Platinum gave us some different sprites, Machop was one, had a pretty different pose "M" pose for one and it gave us proper animated back sprites. I am sure probably some sprites will be new in HGSS and some will be from Platinum or something. I know it would take a lot to do every sprite with gender differences, but if you look at what has gone into HGSS, they took the time to ad 3D looking water and have every pokemons overworld sprite so it can follow you, so I am sure tye'd have the time to create new sprites fo these games too if they so wished.

LOL I think I got that backwards. You know what I mean. I like the following concept.

Just throwing this out there, but why would G3 and G4 pokes need new sprites? All G3 pokes were the same in FRLG.

Oh, and Gender differences are an edit, not a different sprite all together.

They could do something similar to how DPPt and E's animated sprites work, two alternating sprites, then one goes into one pose as the finale, the other goes into the other pose.

Well obviously they're keeping with the Emerald style animation rather than the Crystal style one, but making separate sprites for 251 Pokémon (not even, since some GS Pokémon had the same sprites)? They can do it. It'd be cool, and a good reference.

But even then, not ALL FRLG sprites are anywhere near based on RG or RB sprites.

I really hope they at least rework the Kanto/Johto pokemon sprites.

Dragonite and Blastoise, two of my favorites, have horrible poses.

Oh, I thought that in Silver they had epic poses.

That is a magnificent idea actually.

If you remember, FR/LG only introduced new & reworked sprites for the first 151 Pokemon (and Teddiursa, I think).

HG/SS will probably only have new sprites for the first 251, and they will most likely be the same regardless of which box you pick up at your local game store.

Anyone hoping for anything else is foolish.

My main concern is whether they implement animations in the style of Crystal (multiple frames, thus allowing for smooth movement), or similar to those implemented since Emerald (i.e. two frames used, as well as distortions/rotations etc to the sprite). I personally hope that they use Crystal-like ones as it was fun to watch the Pokemon blink and make multiple movements. The ones used since then in Emerald and DPPt are just lazy and lethargic in my opinion.

Of course, Game Freak will probably take the latter option as HG/SS are being built on DPPt's engine. A shame really, but nothing i'll get too hung up on. As for the unique sprites for the two versions, i'm indifferent to it really. It was a feature I enjoyed back in the day as it gave both versions their own sense of identity, if you will (although I only owned Silver), therefore it would be a nice little nod to the originals if this was done.

Whether any of this is done, we'll have to wait and see I guess. :)

493 normal sprites
493 shiny sprites

multiple frames for crystal animation.

It's all too much for GameFreak to do. We're getting DPPt animations.

I'm thinking it'll definitely be DPPt-style, since Crystal-style would require many more sprites to be stored, which causes the same problem of work and time consumption that unique version sprites cause.

Sugimori and co. will have motherfuckin' lots of spriting work in HGSS. Save them this one, please...

We'll be getting 493 Overworld Pokemon and respective Forms... I just hope that it doesn't affect quality of battle sprites of Trainers and Pokemon. Silver's battle sprite didn't look too great...

I also hope for decent animations in HGSS. We're currently at Generation IV and Crystal STILL has best animations!
