Hi everyone! I am new to Bulbagarden and wanted to kick things off with a fanfic. I am a HUGE Ursula fan, so I thought I would create a backstory for her and develop her rivalry with Dawn more. I hope you enjoy the first chapter! Constructive criticism is welcome, but no bashing, please!

I do not own Pokemon!

Chapter One: Wannabe

Ursula was parked in front of the TV, ready for today's episode of The Contest Digest. What better way to pass the time while she waited for her tenth birthday? It was tomorrow, but she was really looking forward to the day after tomorrow. Because, then, she could finally enter a Contest.

"Ursula? Are you in here?" came her mom's voice. A woman with beautiful red hair walked in, carrying several wrapped packages. She set them down on the coffee table and joined her daughter on the couch. She smiled when she noticed the enchanted look on her daughter's eyes as Marian announced the when and where of today's Contest.

"Soon enough, that will be me she's talking about!" Ursula exclaimed. "Everyone will know what a great Coordinator I can be!" You could practically see the stars in her eyes as she imagined herself taking the stage, finally getting the attention she had been begging for after her mom lost her job. Around here, it was mostly about work, but her mom, a previous Coordinator, always made time to discuss them with Ursula, and encourage the young girl to follow her dreams.

"Of course, honey," her mom said. "But let's enjoy one more episode together before you go."

The two enjoyed the show, especially the appeals round. Ursula was particularly entranced by the use of Sandstorm to wow the crowd. Already, she could see herself doing it.

As Marian said a cheerful goodbye to the viewers, Ursula's mom flicked off the TV. "Did you see your gifts, honey?"

Ursula looked at the table, where silver-wrapped presents lay, just begging to be opened. "Yes. I am so excited!" Ursula hugged herself with glee.

Her mom smiled sadly. "To think...it seems like it was just yesterday I was teaching you about Contests." She stared into space for a while, before snapping back to attention. "Anyway, I'm about to start making your cake. I want it to be a surprise, so go take a walk. All right, dear?"

Ursula waved goodbye to her mom, then stepped out into the warm sunshine. She was so excited about the impending journey that she ran along the sidewalk and into the park, dreaming of Contests and fame. She would be so famous that her mom's money problems would be long gone. And, soon, she would get to be the star of the show.

"Well, if it isn't Ursula!" a stuck-up voice said. Ursula paused in her lively run to see two girls her age, Ana and Lindsey, coming her way.

"My day was going fine until you showed up!" Ursula hissed. She couldn't stand those two. They had actually been pretty nice to her before her mom lost her job, but the second it happened, they had started teasing her, saying she was poor.

"Oh, shush," Ana, the nastier of the two, sneered at Ursula. "After all, you're talking to a girl with a Pokemon! Go, Pachirisu!" Ana twirled around and tossed a Poke Ball, and the little electric squirrel popped out.

Ursula stared at Ana in disbelief. How could she have a Pokemon already? She hadn't turned ten yet! "Ana's mom got her a Pokemon early, since she has the MONEY to get it!" Lindsey exclaimed.

"And, pretty soon, we'll be the best Coordinator-and-Pokemon combo in the whole region!"

Ursula yelled back, "Well, you can't leave on a journey yet! I'll be entered in the Grand Festival before you even earn a Ribbon! I can do anything I want once I'm on my own! I'll earn money! I'll be the best! I'll be the star of the show! I'll be-"

Ana pushed Ursula into the nearby mud puddle. As the redhead stared up at the two girls in disbelief, Ana smirked. "You'll be a WANNAbe."

The girls laughed their heads of and Ursula scowled, but tears were running down her cheeks.

Hope you liked it! The next chapter will be Ursula's birthday, and then we'll fast forward a bit to her first Contest. Keep watch for more of this story, and more an Ikarishipping story!
