Starter Originality

Well there's been talk about Psychic Fighting Dark as a Starter trio since at least Gen II, I can remember it going that far back, but I think it might finally be time for it to happen - I have a few reasons why too:

1) The Physical/Special split introduced in GenIV means this could be implemented without it being stupid. In GenIII and before, this never would've worked but now I think it COULD.

2) Themed colours - I suspect there's a chance that the starters may end up being the version mascots for these games. I'm not saying they WILL but I'm saying there's a chance. In that case the Black Pokemon could be the Dark type and the White Pokemon could be either Fighting or Psychic.

3) Originality - In DPPt, Game Freak started to exercise a certain level of originality - for example, the Professor's lab wasn't in the starting town and small things like that, I think after four generations of the same type trio they might just make a change to make the games a bit more original. Each generation the starter trio have been a bit less inspired than the one before it, particularly GenIV, the final evolved forms of the GenIV starters are hideous.

Of course, there is counter-evidence too, here are my ideas of why this WOULDN'T happen:

1) Total immunity - Dark being IMMUNE to Psychic makes things a bit unfair for the Psychic starter. I think if this starting trio were implemented then it'd have to be changed to Dark is resistant to Psychic rather than immune and I'm not sure I can see Game Freak making that kind of change.

2) Tried and tested - Water/Fire/Grass seem to work, even if they are getting a bit old, Game Freak could go by the logic of 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it'

I'd also like to see a bit of originality in how the starters are obtained. It's getting a bit old that every bloody region has its own Professor... Four Professors handing out standardised Pokemon is getting a bit silly imo, I'd like to see a different way of obtaining your starter, even if it is just someone else giving it to you. I'd like it if your rival had three and gave you one then someone else one and kept one for his/herself or possibly if you caught your starter in the Safari Zone.

Anyway, what are general opinions on this matter? I'd love to hear some ideas.

What if you made dual types? Like Water-Fighting, Grass-Psychic, and Fire-Dark? Or a different combination?

Only type-triangles that would work are
The only possible starter triangles (i.e. three types that are weak to one another in a rock-paper-scissors fashion and the same with resistances in reverse) other than the traditional Fire/Water/Grass are Rock/Fighting/Flying, Fire/Rock/Steel and Grass/Poison/Ground.
Have fun.

I'm not sure where I missed the part of Nintendo being unoriginal with their own product. There is a difference between being repetitive and being unoriginal.

how about the starter runs into you as you walk out the door. and maybe you have to choose it beforehand?

how about we r the regional prof's son/daughter.We played with the starter all the time.(We choose the type instead of how it looks when we enter our name and gender etc.)But 1 day the big, bad meanies comes and kidnaps our beloved mom/dad (hope prof. will be female) so we set out in to the world to get our parent back with our trusted partner. The rival is not our best friend but some1 that has the pokemon stronger to us from the bad team. 3. pokemon well s/he could be our best friend who decided to help us.

P.S: Oh god i can be pretty cheesy when i am at work and bored.

I'm going to assume that's too dark for Pokemon. Besides, where would the tried and true quest to become the x region champion by defeating the Gym leaders and completing the Pokedex fit in?

very easy to rectify my friend. Since we r 10 years old and dont know our way around (well actually every pokemon trainer we play happened to be genius but...) our best friends mom will stop us and will tell us that if we want to get strong enough to save our beloved parent we need to challenge gyms and learn their secrets(that is read TM's :)).Also she will inform us that we need to capture more pokemon and give us our mom/dad's new invention of pokedex. (we can probably assume she is our dad's assistant or some such)So now we have a goal to get strong defeat every gym leader learn thier secrets and save our parent as a result. maybe to make things more of a challenge we can defeat the leader (that is rival of course we dont know that and in fact neither does s/he) after e4 after a suggestion from the 1st gym leader. This scenario gives more interaction with gym leaders although it sounds more of a C class movie script.

I wrote the original idea when i was @ work and I was bored but now i think about it this is very good, cheesy, cliche but good . At the very least we have some reason to fight of bad guys. (This is not that dark)

Let's assume for a moment they did this. What if you chose the Psychic starter? You would never be able to touch your Rival's starter.

Don't be stupid like a stupid person. Every starter starts with a Normal move, and by the time they're learning elemental moves they have other Pokémon to deal with their rival's starter. Really, does ANYONE exclusively use their starter to fight the rival's starter after the first battle?

:bounce:I have a great idea for new starter types. Flying, Fighting, and Rock!
Flying ---> Fighting
Fighting ---> Rock
Rock ---> Flying.
It works out perfectly and it's completely original! :D

I would SO get Flying. It's my favorite type!

Oh please no! I vastly prefer the legendaries being on the box. If we do starters on the box, we'll leave one of the starters out and why put it on the box if you can get it in the opposite version as well?

First off, the Gen.IV starters were the best trio, IMO (Though my fave is Torchic). Their final evos weren't hideos, they just weren't cute to show that they mean business.

DPPt's way of getting the starters was very original. And I doubt they'll change it to someone else giving you the startrs. Sure, it'd be a nice change, but I just couldn't see it happening.

I did, once.

It was Gen II. Typhlosion Vs. Feraligatr.

It was a tough battle. I don't recommend it.
