Just about to restart FireRed and Pearl and was wondering what everyone thought was the best starter for both games.

Also, is there any Pokemon on either game that you suggest I catch.

for me fierred bulbasure i use it take out pokemon while at the same time heal my own using poison powder leach seed & also sleep powder for solarbeam set up

pearl chimchar is just the best periode

For FireRed, though all of them are useful in their own ways, I think you're better off going with Bulbasaur. It has a type advantage over Brock, Misty, Lt. Surge (electric isn't effective to Grass) and Giovanni, as well as a theoretical advantage to Erika. It's got a neutrality to Koga and it's only at a disadvantage against Blaine and Sabrina. As for the Elite Four, it's got an advantage against Loreli (only Jynx isn't weak to Grass,) Bruno's Onix as well as a resistance to his Machamp, Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan's STAB attacks. It can Sleep Powder/Leech Seed support against Agatha and Lance and it has an advantage to Green's Rhydon (and later his Tyranitar) as well as a handy neutrality to his Gyarados.


In Pearl, the best starter I think is Chimchar. If you can evolve it before battling Roark, it'll have an advantage over: Roark, Gardenia, Maylene's Lucario, Byron and Candice. With a neutrality to Fantina, the rest of Maylene's Pokemon and Volkner. It's only disadvantage is at the hands of Wake. Against the Elite, it's at an advantage against Aron, but should stay away from Bertha and Lucian. The fact that Flint, in Pearl, has a Lopunny and a Steelix means it winds up having an advantage to those Pokemon as well as a neutrality (on his fire side) to Drifblim. It's at a stalemate against Infernape and Rapidash, which means that while it's not at an advantage, it's not at a disadvantage. It can also take on Cynthia's Roserade and Lucario quite handily.

In short:

FireRed: Bulbasaur

Pearl: Chimchar
