I used to be a huge pokemon fan. I watched the cartoon, had the pokemon games, you name it. My buddies in 5th grade got me started on it, seemed like almost everyone liked it but me, I was just into Super Mario games. I even remember saying that Yoshi would whip Lickitung's ass. lol. But I just didn't understand what they saw in it.

I think it was towards the end of 5th grade when I started liking it. I watched the cartoon, loved it, and loved the gameboy games too. I think I got the red version first, then yellow. With Gold and Silver, they took a kick ass idea and made it even more awesome with a larger world, more pokemon, and different times of the day with pokemon that come out at certain times.

By the time I was around 14 or so, I just sort of stopped playing. I never got Crystal or any versions after that. I'm not really sure what happened, whether I just lost interest, or felt it was too kiddish, not sure.

I never totally stopped playing though. I remember reading about the Mew glitch when I was 15 and started playing again for a little. And I've gone back to it every once in a while. I'm 21 now. I'm thinking about playing through some of the games again and maybe playing the Stadium games because I'm going through another "pokemon phase" now. lol

So I'm wondering, do you think the newer pokemon games are better than Gen I and II?

Yes! Gen IV at the very least. Gen III also simply because Hoenn was cool. Some people may not like it but the game is worth the effort. My advice: get emerald.

Gen 3 is ENTIRELY skippable. Gen 4 on the other hand, switched the ball game up a lot, and really shakes the Pokemon universe up quite a bit.

However, if you're questioning whether Pokemon has essentially remained the same RPG game in which you catch, raise, and compete little creatures with one another, then yes, it's conceptually the same. But I would certainly say that the variations and additional features made it very exciting and fresh.

My story's similar to yours, in that I too got out of it. Gen 4 ultimately dreagged me back in it.

My verdict:

Gen 3, completely skippable.
Gen 4, really has a lot to offer.

If you stopped at Gen 2, why would you NOT come back for HG/SS? Unless you're so diehard that unless it's on your Gameboy or GBC, it's not worth it.

The games are pretty much the same formula, just improved upon from game to game.

I recommend getting Platinum, its an improved version of DP and the best game to get into the franchise with. Its the definitive game in the franchise at the moment

If you skip Gen III, you can always get a lot of the Hoenn Pokemon in Platinum, or through online trading. The storyline in Pokemon is non-existant, so don't worry about missing anything other than the Pokemon themselves, which are capturable in the later games.

Re: Stopped playing pokemon after Gold and Silver . Should I move on to Gen III and I

I found Hoenn quite tedious due to the sheer number of water routes and HMs. Still well worth playing, though.

I've decided that Gen III is in fact a waste of time, since its just so EASY. Seriously, you can go through the whole game with a Blazkien. Your Starter. Thats bad.

Deffinitly get Diamond or Pearl, I think those were really well done.

Otherwise, just wait for the GS remakes to come out.

the point of pokemon isnt completing it though..hell the point of any game isnt completing it, it's enjoying it, yes it's easy, but i really enjoyed going through it :)

I actually thought Gen III was quite good.I enjoyed it alot.Probably because that was my first Pokemon game.I watched the anime long before I played the games.I suggest getting Emerald

Trufax. Blaziken kicked major ass.

Also, I do agree; Gen III is a waste of time (even if it does have my favorite Pokemon ever, Wynaut). But Gen IV was very good.

I too, was in your position a while ago, but I've now played through Gens III and IV, however.. cost wasn't exactly an obstacle.. for reasons that we aren't allowed to discuss on the forums :)

If you only want one, go with Gen IV, it's far superior in my opinion, Hoenn was just a bit haphazard.

Topic Creator, I'm a lot like you.
I tried Ruby and didn't care in the least, and nothing my sister's Pearl game had was at all desirable.

But what I did enjoy to no end were Fire Red and Leaf Green. I was a couple of years late on them, but I still had plenty of fun even if others were moving to the DS.

Now that Heart Gold and Soul Silver are in development, I can participate in Gen3/4 while sticking with the Gen1/2 I loved so much. You could try that if you're iffy about trying to jump into Gen4.

Apparently you only need to play HGSS to play all six games. Or so it seems.

Re: Stopped playing pokemon after Gold and Silver . Should I move on to Gen III and I

I don't know why everyone thinks Generation III sucks. True, it's nowhere near as good as Generation II, but it still sort of has a Pokémon feel to it.

I recommend you start with FireRed and LeafGreen, the remakes of Red and Blue. Then you'll want to get filled in on the rest by playing Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald. I highly recommend Diamond and Pearl after that, and likely Platinum later on. Finally, save the best for last with HeartGold and SoulSilver.

In addition, if you have a Wii, I recommend you get a GameCube controller, a GCN-GBA cable, and Pokémon Colosseum and Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness. For those hard-to-catch Pokémon.

However, I would only recommend doing this if you feel you can stick with it. If it's just something you want to do because you're bored....stick to the Mario games. :eh:

Re: Stopped playing pokemon after Gold and Silver . Should I move on to Gen III and I

I agree with the people who say that gen 3 is skippable. If you must get one, get Emerald. If you don't want to develop a hatred for pokemon, then skip R/S/E completely.

FireRed or LeafGreen are very good remakes in my opinion.

If you're just playing for the story, then get Platinum.

If you're looking to complete the pokedex, then get half of them and find a friend that will get the other half.

Re: Stopped playing pokemon after Gold and Silver . Should I move on to Gen III and I

I'd skip Generation III personally. But Platinum is a must-play, and of course if you are a GS fan, the upcoming Heart Gold/Soul Silver duo is a can't miss.

Re: Stopped playing pokemon after Gold and Silver . Should I move on to Gen III and I

I started playing Red again a few days ago and I'm past Surge. I have a Diglett and I was gonna keep him but probably will stop by Mt. Moon and pick up a Geodude and use Golem instead. I have Charizard, Gyarados and Kadabra, probably gonna keep them and evolve Kadabra. I also have Gloom but I don't like most grass types that much because most em are mixed with poison and don't get much out of it. But Gloom's got Cut so I'll be keeping it for a little.

So you guys like Fire Red and Leaf Green huh? Is it worthy to be called a remake of Red and Blue? :)

Hell yeah.

Stay away from Ruby/Sapphire. Emerald was an acceptable game and FireRed/LeafGreen will be nostalgic for you.

You can probably pick up a GBA game for 15 bucks, so you don't have much to loose. If you like them, pick up DPPt.
