I'm surprised that no one have done this yet. I just started a new action to get the dub names of characters, who weren't called by name in actual episode/movie, but may have names in Subtitles/Closed Captioning.

Below is the list of characters, whose dub names aren't known and must be got from Subtitles. There's a whole lot of them. But if you have a Subtitled DVD with Pokemon Episodes, please help us. Of course, I realize that some of those characters may not have dub names at all. But please help anyway. It's not only for Bulbapedia. It's also for the people who need it, or just are curious. In the list, I'll use the English names of Episodes and things for the sake of simplicity.

KANTO:
  • Keita from EP049 (So Farfetch'd, So Good), Possible name: Keith
  • Reiko from EP053 (The Purr-fect Hero)
  • Assumpta's (or whatever) name spelling - EP080 (Friends to the End)

ORANGE:
  • Ivy's (Uchikido's) Assistants from EP083 (PokeBall Peril), Possible names: Faith, Hope and Charity, but which is which? Confirmed Names: Faith (Konami), Hope (Tsunami) & Charity (Minami) (from Tracey West's books)
  • Senta from EP085 (Fit to be Tied)
  • Tadokoro from EP089 (Shell Shock), According to Bulbapedia he's Umberto, but I'm not sure if the guy who added this is trustable.
  • Kouji & Anne from EP090 (Stage Fight)
  • Mikeosu & Shimajio from EP096 (Meowth Rules)

JOUTO:
  • Aerial's (Makoto's) Dub Name Spelling - EP128 (The Whistle Stop)
  • Ellen from EP139 (Mild'n Wooly)
  • Yosaku from EP145 (A Farfetch'd Tale)
  • Denjiro from EP164 (Carry On)
  • Keiko from EP165 (Hassle in the Castle)
  • Nario from EP173 (Wobbu-Palooza)
  • Sasuke from EP176 (Ariados Amigos)
  • Toukichi from EP176 (Ariados Amigos)
  • Gonif's (or whatever) Name Spelling - EP192 (The Wayward Wobbuffet)
  • Haruno from EP200 (Turning Over a New Bayleef)
  • Boyd from EP203 (The Screen Actor's Guilt)
  • Kaburagi from EP251 - EP254 (Beauty is Skin Deep to Better Eight Than Never) Confirmed Dub Name: Kaburagi

HOUEN:
  • Yaohei from AG068 (A Double Dilemma)
  • Midori (Corsola Owner) from AG095 (The Evolutionary War) Confirmed Dub Name: Midori
  • Jump from AG126 (Saved by the Beldum)

BATTLE FRONTIER:
  • Rikako from AG138 (Rough, Tough, Jigglypuff)
  • Hiroshi from AG166 (Curbing the Crimson Tide)
  • Hiro'o from AG175 (The Ole' Berate and Switch)
  • Oriba from AG175 (The Ole' Berate and Switch)

SHIN'OU:
  • Yuuzo from DP01 (Following a Maiden Voyage)

MOVIES:
  • The Pirate from First Movie ('cause Raymond is a fanname after his Seiyuu, isn't it?)
  • David from Movie 3 (I don't know who he is, but Japanese credits list such character)
  • White from Pokemon 4Ever
  • Towa from Pokemon 4Ever
  • Bogie (the seller) from Jirachi Wish Maker
  • Guruu (Glue?) the announcer from Destiny Deoxys
  • Jenny from Lucario and the Mystery of Mew (I didn't hear her referred to by name in the dub a single time)

Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The character you call "David" from movie 3 is probably Skyler (who the captions refer to as Schuyler, but that has a drasticly different pronunciation). Unless he's the Hale mansion butler, since that's the only unnamed male I can think of in the film.

Mr White and Pirate Trainer don't have dub names. I'm assuming he's still Mr White for lack of anything better, and since Pirate Trainer doesn't have a Japanese name, well...

There's two caption names given in movie 2--Jirarudan is identified as "Gelarden", and the Shamouti elder is called "Tobias".

I believe the guy in the Shroomish episode in Hoenn was only identified in captions as well, but it's been a while. I think his name was Alex, but I haven't seen that ep since it aired, so...

I'm also pretty sure that Ivy's assistants don't have canon names.

No, Skylar was John, Sully's assistant. David is someone else, I'm assuming that he's that butler in Mee/Molly's house.

UPDATE: Yes he is. I checked this out on PokeAni.

Pyrate Trainer didn't have a name even in Comic version (he was just "Pirate Trainer"). So, I really don't think he has a name (but Tobias also didn't have any in Comic, nor in Japanese Version, but he had in movie Caption). I'm just wondering where did Merrick get "Kezoki" from.

Yeah. I know about Tobias because my friend once showed me the voice actors list from Polish DVD and a character named Tobias was listed there. I was surprised who is Tobias and he told me that Tobias is the elder. Interesting point is, that Tobias never got a name in Japanese Version.

I know it, too, from Dogasu's Backpack.

I'm also pretty sure that Ivy's assistants don't have canon names.

In the Japanese version they had names: Tsunami, Minami and Konami. Someone in the Wikipedia said "Faith, Hope and Charity". But I'm not sure if this can be believed. And, even if this is real, there is one more problem - which one is which?

I remember that they did say the Corsola trainer name and her name is Midori

Doesn't the name of that girl from the first Hunter J episode come from closed captioning?

As, for Ivy's assistants, according to Journey to the Orange Islands by Tracy West:

"I'm Charity," said the girl in the orange shirt.
"I'm Faith," said the girl in the pink shirt.
"I'm Hope," said the girl in the green shirt.

I've also seen Keith for the boy in Epi 49, although I can't remember where.

Both the Tracey West books and Extreme Pokémon come from Scholastic, so both of them can be considered the same source.

Yes, Ivy's assistants are indeed named Faith, Hope, and Charity. I believe their names are stated in the episode, though I'm not sure if it's stated which is actually which in the anime.

As for where the names came from, well let's just say "Three... is a magic number...."

To quote further, "The past, and the present, and the future, Faith, and Hope, and Charity, the heart, and the brain, and the body give you three... as a magic number...."

In the bolded part, three girls appear with each part of the three leading me to believe that might possibly be where they got it from, but I could be wrong.

So, we know who is who. Thanks Jonah.

About the canonicity of West's books: See, the canonicity of dub is disputed as well. If those books are the only source, then those names can be considered as official English names for those characters. These books are a part of AMERICAN Pokemon media, so they have American names. They are the closest-to-canon source. So, the names can be safely considered as official. However, the storyline of the books, is not considered as canon.

It's just like the canonicity of dub. The dub is an adaptation of the original anime, so it's a canon but dub-added things (like that Hiroshi has an EV and comes from "Fradomar" City) are not considered as canon. Simple.

And about the source of Faith, Hope and Charity - it's from Bible. We have a Biblical reference.

I was surprised too to hear a Japanese name but I'm sure about that
on my dub masterquest dvd, Kaburagi's name was in the subs, which means that's another Japanese name in the dub.
Also, half the time they switched from Kaburagi to "old man" when referring to him. It was weird.

Okay, so updated the names with Faith, Hope, Charity, Midori and Kaburagi.

But we're still nowhere near completeness.

People with subbed DVDs - please help us!

  • Tadokoro from EP089 (Shell Shock), According to Bulbapedia he's Umberto, but I'm not sure if the guy who added this is trustable.

I have a feeling whoever added that did so because of one of the Topps Trading Cards. I have one describing Shell Shock and it lists his name as Umberto. However, I don't know if there is anything else confirming this. Not sure if one trading card can be considered definitive proof, either.

HOUEN:
  • Yaohei from AG068 (A Double Dilemma)
  • Jump from AG126 (Saved by the Beldum)

Which character was Yaohei?

I don't believe they gave Jump an English name, subtitled or not, but I'd have to double-check by rewatching the episode. I happen to have both of those episodes on DVD, but I can't check now as I am away at college. When I get back home in early March I'll check, unless somebody has the DVDs on them right now.

  • Towa from Pokemon 4Ever

According to Michael Haigney and Norman Grossfeld, the script referred to her as Old Towa (on the movie's audio commentary).

I see

If there is no other name, I think we can use Umberto. Just like with Faith, Hope & Charity.

NOTE: The Topps Cards also list Denjiro's name as Mr. Denjiro, but they also list Watari (Malachi) as Watari. So, I'm not sure if this source can be 100% trusted.

Which character was Yaohei?

I have a problem here. According to Dogasu's Backpack, Yaohei's dub name is Rose. But Yaohei is MALE (at least according to PokeAn, but names ending with -hei are male). I dunno if it was another sex change, or Dogasu has just mistaken something.

A proof that certain character does not have a name in English Version is also appreciated.

So, Towa is Towa. But still, if anyone has subtitles and can check it, this would be appreciated (of course I'm aware that she may be referred to jusrt as "Diana's Grandmother" in subtitles also)
