Hello one and all. Whether you are slowly burning to death in the northern hemisphere or quickly freezing in the southern hemisphere, I think we all can do with a distraction from the terrible effects of climate change. So why not spend the next few weeks while you sit at your computer in your underwear/buried under a mountain of blankets taking part in the SUMMER AWARDS 2016!!!!!

This season is a season of change: our goal this time is to get as many and a wide as possible range of stories and characters through the voting and judging rounds, and we hope you all are behind that message.

But before we get to that, we must start with the nominations. You have a week (or until 7PM June 12th NZT) to PM me with your nominations. However, we ask that you wait the next 24 hours before submitting anything. Because of our new rules, we want to make sure everyone has read as many stories as possible: plus, we moderators have snuck in first and placed our own nominations so people may have to read something else ;)

Before we go any further, these are the big things you MUST be aware of:
- You must nominate one story and one character from someone else’s work when nominating your own stories/character, and they cannot have already been nominated this season. If you only submit nominations for your work it will not be eligible. You can follow the list in the next post to see which stories/characters have not already been nominated
- There is no limit on how many categories you can nominate in when nominating other people’s work. You still can only nominate one character and story per category though.
- We made a last minute decision and have decided to put all short stories under 3k in with Poetry. This is largely due to the limited range of poem anthologies and the influx of short stories over the six month period. Any poetry anthologies from the last twelve months are eligible in this contest due to no nominations in December. Apologies for the last minute-ness of this but we want to trial it and see how it works.

For the rest of the rules and a reminder of the categories, click the spoiler below. A detailed explanation of the categories is available in the Hall of Fame for any first time nominators.

The categories:
-Best Journey Fic (for stories that follow a gym or contest storyline or something of a similar theme)
-Best Dark Fic (for stories that have dark and/or mature themes and storylines at the core of the story)
-Best Crossover/Non Pokémon Fic (for stories that cross Pokémon over with another franchise, is from a different fandom or is a completely original piece of work)
-Best Expansion (for stories that expand on canon characters and concepts)
-Best Alternate (for all Pokémon stories that don’t go anywhere else)
-Best Poetry and Short Prose (for any poetry anthologies, single poems or short stories 3k or less)
-Best Protagonist (the lead of your story)
-Best Antagonist (the villain of your story – though not just an evil baddie!!!)
-Best Supporting Character (any other character in your story)
-Best Pokémon Character (for Pokémon characters in a supporting role that have been written exceptionally well. Pokémon that speak human/English are allowed here, but Pokémon in Mystery Dungeon fics should be placed in protag/antag/supporting)

The rules:
- When nominating your own work, you can nominate two stories/characters per category, but there is a limit of four nominations for the story categories and seven nominations for the character categories. When you are nominating someone else's work, you are now allowed to nominate one story and one character in each category; there is no longer a limit on how many categories you can nominate. If you are nominating your own work, please place the nominations underneath the ones for your stories.

Here is a rundown of what that means:
- 4 of your own stories, two per category (eg 1 Journey, 1 Dark, 2 Alternate)
- 7 of your own characters, two per category (eg 2 protags, 2 antag, 1 supporting, 2 Pokemon)
- one nomination per story and character categories for work by another writer
The maximum number of nominations allowed is 21.

And remember: the story/charactet you nominate to qualify your work MUST NOT have already been nominated.

- A link to each story must be provided for ease of checking your work. Your entry will be void if you do not submit a link and I will not be reminding you. Any entries which are not properly filled out will be ignored.

Please submit links like this:
Step One: Highlight the name of the story

Step Two: Click this icon

Step Three: Paste the link in the red box
stepthree_zpsuu0skcga.png

Step Four: You’re done! It should look like this

Since I have made it so easy to do it this way, if links are not submitted this way your nominations will be ignored.

- Fics that have been published or updated since December 22nd NZ Time are eligible for these Awards. You can update your work up until the end of the voting period for it to be counted during judging. Any chapter published once judging commences will not be taken into consideration. Any character you nominate must have appeared in a chapter that has been posted during this period. If your story makes it onto the judging round, we ask that you do not edit your past work on this site during that period. Doing so can make your entry void.

- Any story that has previously won an award must have 20k words of new content posted since December 22nd to be eligible for these awards.

- You may only nominate your stories in one category: ie, you can't submit 'Generic Journey Story # 247 ' in Best Journey and Best Expansion, only choose one. Do not try and slip your stories/characters into other categories in order to get them in (ie if you have three Journey fics and you try to get one of them nominated under Alternate). If we catch you out the entry will be made void.

- If a story or character has previously won in one category, it cannot be submitted into any other category without a providing a reasonable explanation as to why the change should be allowed. This would only be allowed if a character's role has drastically changed (ie an antagonist becomes a supporting character) or the story has changed genres (ie a Journey fic drops the journey elements and becomes Dark). The moderators will decide if the change is warranted.

- If a group of characters operate as a single entity, we will allow them to be submitted as one character.

- Do not ask people to nominate your work, as there is no point since you can just do it yourself.

Please feel free to ask for any further clarifications if my rambling makes no sense, which tis often the case. I encourage everyone to double check the content of their story before submitting and see if it can fit outside of the traditional Journey and Alternate. If your story has elements of Expansion or Dark to it, I would recommend submitting in those categories so we can try for a more even spread or work. At the same time, if your story has no elements of those two categories, obviously do not submit them there for the sake of a maybe easy win as we will just move it once judging begins – but be smart and don’t just go for Journey if you don’t have to.

You have a week, so get cracking and get nominating! We are always looking for new judges to join our team so if you want to give it a crack please send me a message! It basically just involves reading two stories over three weeks minimum – not a huge ask and does not take very long.

Thank you and good luck to all!

If you do not wish one of your characters or stories to be entered for contention, you can message me and request that they are blocked. This will prevent anyone from nominating the work you’ve selected. The block only lasts for these awards so you can enter it in the next awards if you wish. Please double check here before nominating. You can choose to block individual characters from a story but still nominate your own story.
Stories that did not meet the 20k limit for past winners are listed here as well.

Nominations are prevented for the following Stories and Characters:
some rise by sin by kintsugi
Stainless Steel by Lugion
Lucky Egg by BinkVallen

Evelina Joy from The Long Walk by Beth Pavell

I will update this list as often as possible. Also if you do not want your story nominated you can request it be removed from this list, it will not affect the person who nominated you. Similarly, if you are unhappy with a category your work has been nominated under, you can request a change.

You may now start sending in your nominations. Remember that you must nominate one story and one character not on the list above when nominating your own work.

Aw, dang it. I appreciate whoever nominated TAP, really, I do, but I was going to nominate a work of mine that HADN'T already won. :p Am I still allowed to do this, AT?

I wish I could have a chance at the character awards though. I've nominated a lot of mine in the past, and they never win. But it doesn't stop me from trying anyway... :p I need to make some work that fit other categories too. It kinda gets old going for the same award over and over in general. But of course, just writing things for the sake of awards isn't a good idea either... I'll have to find good reasons to write more of a variety of stuff!

EDIT: Actually, now that I think about it, I might as well not nominate the story I wanted to add at all. There's no way it'd beat TAP. xP But I guess it wouldn't hurt to try anyway. It'll get this fic some attention.

@Kelleo you can nominate whatever you like as long as you nominate one story and character by someone else as well.

Just to clarify to people, you can nominate as many stories and characters from your work and work by other people - the one story/character thing is a minimum, not a maximum

Ah, I see now, thank you for clarifying. :)

Haha, can't blame you, Gama. lol

I sent in my nominations. But wow, I already see the winner of Best Non-Pokemon so far...considering that it already won it...by beating a fic that's been nominated there again as well. There's little chance that the losing fic just somehow got better. :p But oh well, TAP's already had its glory, so I don't care anyway. Besides, it's better to lose to a fic that's loved this much than one that isn't!

I don't know about that. I've seen judging play out over several seasons now, and there's every chance of a winner being beaten the next time round. Sometimes it's down to something as simple as a change in the judges. I know to my cost that Journey is a right cutthroat category

Yeah, you do have a point there. I hadn't thought much about the changes in judges. I guess I didn't think they changed that often. :p

@AceTrainer14; Heya, I see the list is updated again, but not with the nominations I made? I know you were still looking into two of them to get their categories straight, but what about the rest?

...That's strange, I KNOW I copied the link for that other story and put it in the message. I have no idea why it didn't go through. I'll try to add it again. Stupid website...

Just as a reminder to people as this is buried in the rules a bit, but if a Pokemon is the lead of the story, we are counting them as protagonists ratehr than in the Best Pokemon character category. The latter category is for Pokemon that generally play the part of a Pokemon in canon, but the writer has made them more than just a pet or a soldier in a wider game. PMD characters or Pokemon that are the leads or villains of a story are something else entirely and should be in their respective categories. If you are confused, have a read of past Pokemon character winners for inspiration.

Wow, someone actually nominated my story? I'm both flattered and... rather surprised. I didn't think anyone would nominate me. I admit I haven't been hanging around here lately, so I just on a whim checked this thread out. But thank you to whoever nominated me, I'm quite touched and honored, as I only see my stuff as average quality at best, though that's because I'm my own worst critic due to the nature of my writing habits. But thank you to whoever did this, it means a lot.

I'm honestly surprised someone nominated my Sylvia The Sylveon story. I'm flattered and humbled, but it's an old, outdated fic that I wrote when info of Gen 6 hadn't been revealed yet, it's rather purple prosey, and it gets a lot of details wrong (namely Sylveon's means of evolution, and this was written before its method of evolution was revealed). But people still like and talk about it regardless of its flaws, so I'm happy. Thanks, whoever nominated both Sylvia and MarJour (in regards to Amara as best antagonist)! It means a lot to me!

So there are now two and a half days left to nominate, or 60 hours if you want to be specific. I know we normally end up getting a tsunami of nominations last mintue, but I would just like to remind anyone who has already nominated and didn't use their full nominations available to read widely and bring some more fics and characters into this. Dark and Expansion definitely need some more nominees, and Poetry/Short Prose, Supporting, Antagonist and Pokemon could do with some more competition. So there are 60 hours left to read and nominate both your own work and everyone else's. I say this every time, but if you want to be nominated, do it yourself and don't hold out hoping someone else will do it for you and you miss out.

Hey, @AceTrainer14 , I've got a question. What would my Breath of Fire 3 novelization qualify as? As it delves into another series, I would think Non-Pokemon, but it expands on the canon cast of characters, so it could also fall into Best Expansion. Which one do you think it would work best in? Thanks for your time.

Best Expansion for the time being only applies to Pokemon stories, so for now put it in Non-Pokemon.
