For the "Best Archived Story" tier, is there a limit on how far back that goes? is that the whole archive, or do they have to have been archived after a certain date?

EDIT: Never mind, i just read the rules for nominations XD.

I quite like the "Judge Panel" aspect that have been added. I'm assuming there will be some sort of mini-review to explain the decision?

Yes, each judge will explain their decisions when the announcements are made :)

Also, we forgot to mention a new twist to the prizes this season!

In addition to the traditional prize banners that the winners of the story tier receive, the winning authors will also receive a detailed review in their fic's thread from the judges. It's not a huge prize, but everyone loves their story to be reviewed, so the judges will prove their expertise by awarding the winning fic with a good, thorough review.

That's a great idea, and I was going to mention it; a review is always good, and a detailed one is even better.

Another question about short stories. Since most one-shots are put in the Archive not long after they are submitted (since they are technically finished), can they only be nominated as Archive fics? Or can they still count as short stories if they're relatively recent?

I believe Kayi's post about the Best Archived Fic is a typo and I'll edit it now.

It should read any fic that has been in the archives since before 1st March is eligible for Best Archived Fic rather than 1st July.

One shots follow this same rule.

Basically, if a fic has been updated since 1st March, it's eligible for any relevant award except Best Archived Fic and a fic is only eligible for Best Archived Fic if it has been in the Archive since at least 1st March.

So, short answer, yes, one shots still count as short stories if they're relatively recent.

I had an idea of something that could help get people to read a bit more.

Why don't we make a list of the alternative fics so people find it easier to go and read them and thus nominate for them?

Actually, we're working on a directory of some kind that should sort fics by genre and category which will make nominating a lot easier.

Unfortunately, I highly doubt that will be ready this awards season.

I'd also be reluctant to do it now because I don't have a comprehensive knowledge of all the Alternative Fics in the Workshop and I doubt anyone does and it might end up giving one person unfair attention. Also, if people are specifically pointed out and then not nominated it might lead to hurt feelings.

As I said though, it is a fantastic idea and it is something we're working but in a more long term sense. Thank you for the contribution =)

I was thinking that people who had an Alternative Fic or a fic in an unnominated category could contact a moderator instead of the moderator trying to find them all, as I don't expect moderators to do that much work :p
Of course, it would have to be clear the fic is alternative/whatever genre instead of someone cheating the system

That could be a workable idea. Personally, I would still prefer to leave it for this Award season and wait for the directory (which is under construction) to come into action which may or may not be ready for next season.

What happens if only one fic is nominated for a certain category? Would it win by default, or would something else happen?

Yes, it would win by default, which is why it would be nice to have at least several nominees for each category.

Remember guys, this is the nomination phase of the awards, which means if there is a fic you think should be in the running for an award, nominate it instead of simply nominating something that is already been nominted. Nominating a certain fic doesn't mean you have to vote for it in the voting stage.

Another clarification question here. Sorry to bug you guys so much, but I'm actually working fairly hard on these nominations :-D

What does it mean for an author to be a newcomer? Like, they joined since the last awards season? They've been here under a year? Would I be considered a newcomer (I joined late last December)?

Maybe we should've had a Nomination limit of two or three per category; that would have given some more competitiveness to the awards, and given more options to the nominators.

Maybe if we dont get any nominations in a category, the moderators who arent judging the category could nominate a story each

Ah, the rules of that award were not mentioned this time round since they were last time but I believe the rules are if you have become active in the Workshop since this March you are considered a "newcomer". So, no, you wouldn't be a newcomer, sorry!

Maybe we should've had a Nomination limit of two or three per category; that would have given some more competitiveness to the awards, and given more options to the nominators.

I'm not sure what you mean by this. A list of people appointed by the moderators to already be nominated? I can't help but feel that would not only give them an unfair advantage but render the nominations phase pretty much pointless.

Maybe if we dont get any nominations in a category, the moderators who arent judging the category could nominate a story each

I think this might be a workable idea but I'd be more inclined to do it in categories were there are no nominations. The one person nominated shouldn't really be punished for being the only person in that category.
