“Oh, how did I let this happen again…?”There was no getting around it: Lillie had gotten lost. The young woman was never good at finding her way, and Nebby’s curiosity didn’t help matters. This time, she was walking around Heahea City, checking out the sights and the stores, until Nebby saw what ended up being a Sandygast on a beach in the distance. Cue Lillie noticing her bag got lighter, panicking, and then sprinting in the small Pokémon’s direction before it got hit by a nasty Bulldoze. After recovering the Cosmog, she couldn’t find her way back where she was, and was now panicking.
“Selene… please, help me…” The young refugee felt completely out of her element, and yet, she was ashamed that one little thing such as this was enough to make her call for her best friend. Heahea City wasn’t even as big as Hau’oli, and she still…
“Lillie…? Are you okay?”
“Aah! Professor Burnet!?” Thankfully, it wasn’t long before the girl was found by someone she recognized.
“What are you doing on the floor in the middle of the road…? You’re going to get run over by a Tauros, you know.”
“I-I’m so sorry! I just… Nebby went close to a wild Pokémon, and I panicked, and now… well… I don’t know where I am…”
“sigh Oh, Lillie… you really haven’t changed, even since traveling with Hau and Selene, haven’t you? You just got lost and found again!”
“I’m sorry…” She felt so ashamed that she wanted to melt into the concrete and never come back out again.
“Now now, no more of that. I’ll accompany you to Konikoni, okay? I hear that’s where Selene is headed next, and I’m sure Olivia would be happy to keep an eye on you.”
“N-no, I couldn’t possibly… as a kahuna, she must be very busy…”
“Hush now, young lady. As luck would have it, Kukui left me his Braviary, so we’ll be there in no time.” Before the shy girl had time to respond, Burnet called out the Valiant Pokémon, and they were off.
--------------------------------
“Olivia? You home?” Burnet let herself in the kahuna’s home as soon as they landed, not paying mind to any manners.
“Wha-- Burnet! Don’t just come in so suddenly! What if I was with somebody!?”
“What if, indeed… listen, I just need you to look for this one for some time, okay? Until Selene comes here for the Grand Trial.” The professor pointed her thumb behind her, and Olivia noticed the small, embarrassed girl standing behind her friend.
“Oh, is that all you needed? There’s no problem. I’m pretty much just waiting for Selene myself at this point anyhow. I met her in Diglett’s Tunnel, and she said she had to turn back and get something she forgot to get near… Royal Avenue, I think? So she’ll be a little while.”
“I see… I’m so sorry to bother you, miss, uh, ma’am, uh—”
“sigh That’s Lillie for you…”
“Ha! No need to be so formal with me. Just call me Olivia, okay? I’m too young for ma’am and too old for miss, anyway.”
“Okay, O-Olivia…”
“Anyway, I’ve got to go. You be good, okay, Lillie?”
“O-of course, Professor…”
And just like that, the busy scientist was off, leaving just the shyest and the most friendly people in Akala Island alone together. To say Lillie was beyond ashamed to take up such an important figure’s time was an understatement. But right as she was opening her mouth to apologize again, Olivia started talking.
“So, Lillie… how are you liking Akala?”
“Oh! It’s a really beautiful island. Admittedly, I mostly stayed in Heahea City, because I don’t own any Pokémon, but I really liked my time there. Window shopping with Selene was very pleasant in particular… I picked out some clothes I was hesitant to at her recommendation, and it made me very happy to see her care about my struggles this much.” For the first time since she entered her home, Olivia saw Lillie’s face light up with a smile and a blush. Oh, she knew exactly what was going on there. And she’s not a big enough woman to not tease her about it.
“You really like Selene, don’t you, Lillie? All this natural beauty, and the thing you mention is window shopping with her?”
“She’s a really great friend. I couldn’t ask for anyone better.”
...Huh? “A… friend?”
“Well, yes. What else could she be?”
“Oh, my apologies. I just assumed you had an interest in her, is all.”
“Hm? What do you mean…?” Olivia couldn’t help but be caught off-guard at the girl’s incredulity. Had Lillie never been told she could like other girls if she wanted?
“Lillie… I mean romantically.”
“H-huh!?” Oh gosh, she really didn’t know, huh? “B-but… we’re both girls… if she was a boy, then, maybe I would, but…”
“Are you only interested in boys? Did you ever think of a Youngster or Hau like you think of Selene?”
“Um…” An intensely confused expression appeared on Lillie’s face. She didn’t even know it was possible to like girls as a girl! What was she to do now? Did she like her friend in that way? “N-no…? Hau is nice, but I just don’t think of him like that at all… I just thought I hadn’t met the right boy yet…”
“I’m just going to come right out and ask you, dear,” the kahuna said, taking her by both shoulders and looking into her eyes with a serious expression. “Have you ever heard of lesbians?”
“Laise… bians…? Is that a Pokémon…?”
“Oh, man… this is going to take a while. Okay, have you heard of Champion Cynthia of Sinnoh and the Unovan Elite Four’s Caitlin?”
“Oh, yes! I heard that these two powerful trainers shared a special bond on television. They looked like such great friends!”
“Lillie… honey…” Olivia didn’t know what to say to such a pure and innocent response. She didn’t have a husband; she wasn’t qualified to talk about this to a kid! “Okay, fine. What about the Champion Rank trainers from Paldea? Anna and Nemona?”
“Oh, I think I saw that music video they were in! It was really cute how Anna’s Gengar got its trainer to lean on Nemona in the middle there. They looked much happier holding hands! Another great friendship!”
“Lillie!” Olivia’s voice sounded more exasperated than it probably should have. “That’s not… they’re dating, honey. Both of these “friendships” you value are actually relationships.”
“H-huh? Really!?”
“Yes. That’s what lesbians are. Women who love women. It’s okay to like girls if you’re also a girl, sweetie.”
“I-is it really…!?”
“Mhm. And, I could be wrong, but it seems like to me that you really like Selene in that way. Some signs just don’t lie, and that smile and blush you had when you were talking about your shopping trip… I remember seeing that very same expression on Burnet’s face when she talks about Kukui.”
“…” Lillie was shocked. Was this really something people went through? It was really hard to believe… she grew up very sheltered, never getting to know the outside world due to her mother, but… to be so far out of her element… was it okay for her to not know about this? Oh gosh, does Selene know about this? What if she thinks she’s weird!? Will she not want to be friends anymore!?
Before she knew it, Lillie was crying.
“Oh no, Lillie, what’s wrong? Did I offend you somehow?”
“N-no, I just… this is so much to take in… is it bad that I didn’t know about this…?”
“Of course not, dear… it’s not something many people like to talk to kids about, unfortunately. But it’s perfectly okay not to know, and it’s perfectly okay to be one, too. Trust me, if anyone bothered the legendary Cynthia for such a petty reason… well, I wouldn’t want to be them, that’s for sure. I know what that Garchomp is capable of…”
“Hehe…” the young girl sniffled, and wiped her tears with her hand. “That’s true. If even Cynthia is a… lesbian?” She looked inquisitively at Olivia, who nodded in response. “...well, I don’t have to worry if she’s on my side.”
“That’s for sure, hehe.” The kahuna couldn’t help herself, and had to pat Lillie’s head. “I’m glad I could help you figure something out about yourself. Love is a wonderful thing, isn’t it?”
“It really is! It’s liberating to say that I… I think I love Sele—”
Suddenly, the door opened once more, and to Lillie’s shock and horror, the one person she didn’t want hearing her words stood behind it.
“S-Selene!?”
“Oh, hi, kid. Glad you made it.”
“Hello, Olivia! Hi again, Lillie!” The cheerful young trainer waved at her friend, who looked away and blushed timidly. “Yes, I’m ready for my grand trial, please!”
“Hehe, got it. Why don’t you sit down first, though? I think the both of you deserve some Soda Pop after such a long trip. Just sit tight, I’ll go and get it from the Pokémon Center.”
“Okay! Thank you, Olivia!”
And so, she got up from her chair and left, but not before winking at the love-struck girl, as if to tell her to enjoy her time alone with her crush.
“I’m surprised you got here before me, Lillie. I know I had to take a short detour, but I’m usually the first one to arrive between us two, hehe.”
“Oh, w-well, you know…”
“Hehe, you’re blushing.”
“A-a-a-am not!”
“You totally are! I’m glad I got these then. They fit you even better when your face’s all red!”
To Lillie’s surprise, Selene reached over to get something from her bag. She got her something? But she didn’t ask for anything. What could it be?
“Here you go! Some pretty flowers I saw at Royal Avenue!”
The flowers were definitely pretty, that’s for sure. Almost as pretty to Lillie as her crush’s innocent, toothy smile. They were a bright pink color, and in perfect condition, while also smelling quite nice. It’s the kind you usually only see on TV or in a Grass-type Gym. Lillie didn’t know what to say, or how to react: Selene was already incredibly nice to her before, and now that she knows she’s a lesbian, her gestures affect her even more. And getting her flowers…? She almost fainted from joy on the spot.
“Thank you so much, Selene! Th-they make me really happy to get!”
The road was still long for these two, but Lillie knew that no matter what life had in store for her, she’d be okay as long as Selene was by her side.
