Pretty straightforward. Do you all think the next saga with Sun and Moon will make progress in the anime? With better visuals, more substantial characters and party Pokemon, a female companion with a more active goal, an in-depth saga and so on?

Or do you feel that we will regress in quality, similar to the DP > Unova transition? Thoughts, comments, concerns?

I think its going to be a regression as much as I don't want to see it. Along with the new girl pointing this out to Ash on numerous occasions which means her personality will be just like Iris. This whole thing would make the next saga a bore of watch I mean why to watch something where Ash forgets how to catch a Pokemon. When the last saga he one the league or something it's just a waste of time.

It depends.

The creative team mixes and matches ideas from saga to saga while following a set of guidelines. Usually they try to do things different to avoid/remove issues with the previous saga (though this often creates new ones).

I for one will have to withhold judgment until I've seen the Alola saga in its entirety...

Regression, solely because it'll be difficult to top XY. I still feel that SM is going to be good.

Hopefully we get a reboot and not like BW but I mean all new characters. I am fine with the same vibe as DP/XY but I think after 20 years getting fresh faces would be for the best. If Ash does end up winning Kalos I think that would be the best time too and let him leave on a high note. I would love to see the new girl as the leader with the black guy(?) as her rival. One thing I like about the new director is how he tries new things and breaks patterns the question is how far will he be willing to go. Will he break the league pattern and Ash not returning? (I guess you could say the league pattern in a way did get broken by Ash regressing to top 8 but at the same time the lack of him training in Unova made the sense for his final outcome) The only reason BW fell flat was how it was done. They made it feel like a stand alone series and not a follow up and in a way were trying to make it seem as the past never really happened sadly. And when they did try to make it flow with the other arcs it felt too late. Charizard coming back was cool but felt very forced to me. Not to mention Ash seemed really weird. In Hoenn,Sinnoh and Kalos he was goofy sure but at the same time seemed more mature in things like battles and bonds. Like he was very good with the younger kids like Max and Bonnie. BW Ash seemed more like the younger kids and I think with how good he was as a person in DP people felt really weird about it. Luckily I don't think the mistake will be made. plus didn't a lot of people from BW get fired or something?

It'll do things better than its predecessor and worse than its predecessor, just like all of the series before it.
Piggybacking off what @Dogasu said, the only time the show got a noticeable quality boost was when XY started. OS, AG, and the first 1/2 or so of DP looked more-or-less the same excluding the change from hand-painted cells to digital. It'd be great if SM had a boost (no more stock Team Rocket motto animation 2k16) and it'll probably look different, maybe more consistent, just not way better.

I'm optimistic for progression - there are a lot of major areas for improvement in XY, including but not limited to:
- Satoshi's team
- The Girl's Quest
- All rivals
- Continuity with previous sagas
the new director
Who now?
plus didn't a lot of people from BW get fired or something?
What now?

PLEASE GOD.

As far as I know, BW and XY have the same director and there weren't a lot of people fired after BW, so I think both of those statements are inaccurate.

As for the question itself, I'm hoping for progression. While a lot of people praise Ash, both in and out of the show, he never quite amazed me to the same extent. He's been good, but not "Oh my goodness. He can beat the Elite 4" kind of good for me if that makes any sense. Plus, there are a lot of areas where they can improve upon in a new series without regressing Ash or making the new female lead into a jerk. It's hard to say for sure either way, but hopefully there will be some sense of progression and improvement in the new series.

Oh I thought I read a new guy was hired prior to XY starting. Maybe it was a head writer or something. I just remember them getting someone new but it was in japanese and someone was tweeting about it so maybe things were lost in translation.

It would be cool to see the new girl as a female with past region skills but has a new Alola starter. Like maybe she came from Sinnoh and could be like she was inspired by Ash after seeing him in the Sinnoh league?

I don't recall anything like a new director or head writer being brought in for XY, but I could be mistaken or it was some kind of translation issue.

That would be an interesting twist to the new female lead, as well as throw in more fuel for D/P remakes. It sounds neat, but I pretty sure that the new female lead will be from Alola. It will most likely be the new female trainer, although one of the female Gym Leaders from the games is a possibility too, so they'd probably be from the Alola region.

I am wondering if Serena was from Kalos or Kanto. I know she was in a Kanto camp but was she Kanto than went to Kalos or always Kalos?

I'm pretty sure that she said in the show that she went to Kanto for that summer camp trip. There was never any indication that she moved to Kalos from Kanto at least.

Who was the old one and who is the new one?

Masamitsu Hidaka close to the latter part of AG

Norihiko Sudo from last AG to end of BW

Tetsuo Yajima from XY onward.

Which begs the question as to why the guy who did DP did so bad with BW instead of making it feel like a follow up to BW over what felt like a reboot and it's own stand alone thing. I think if they did not try to redo Kanto but took DP elements and used more of the BW focus fans would have loved it. So once he gets back on his feet the professor gives him a starter as a gift.

As for XY it seems Tetsuo is doing just that. Making XY a follow up from DP. Hopefully they do well with S&M. So far i love XY and hope the style carries into Alola. I think fans also enjoy the Ash progression rather than what he was like in BW. Though it was not just Ash that was the issue in BW. I guess we will have to wait for a trailer at least or just a poster. I am fine if Ash stays but we get a time skip. Like even just two years which should not be insane since to me Ash in XY looks older than Unova Ash anyway. Maybe he wins Kalos but thinks he is all that so he stops training in the time only to get his butt kicked from an Alola trainer while on a trip and finds out his journey is not over. Or maybe his mom and him move to Alola like in the games.

Better visuals, sure. The show's animation is always improving. Better characters, probably not judging by how XY has had mostly generic, low-key characters imo, and I can't see that improving in the next saga unless we get a whole batch of new writers to replace the old ones. :x
