There's really not much relating to PSMD here, so I thought I'd make a thread dedicated to the ever so lovable partner of Super Mystery Dungeon. Probably my favorite partner of the series, cause of that rambunctious and cheerful child-like personality. The game really makes you grow to care about this partner as you go through the game and I just love the development they go through. For me, my partner is a cute little Chespin named Chip.

I'm moving this thread to Video Games since it's about a specific game.

Also btw, I agree with you. I absolutely hated the partner in Explorers of Time/Darkness/Sky, but they're quite enjoyable in this one.

I did like the partner in Explorers, even though I can't actually recall that much about their actual character (due to it being colored by the 2012 Nano I wrote based on Explorers). Them breaking down crying at the end of the main story was very memorable, though.

It was a surprise to discover that the partner in PSMD has such a reputation/history in the starting village, but it's also refreshing. Contrast in Rescue Team and Gates, where it seemed the partner didn't have much story prior to their meeting you.

The reputation they had made me feel so bad for them. Sure they're reckless and sure they're kinda troublesome, not intentionally though. Everyone just finds them so irritating though and everyone just shuts them down because of their dreams of working in the Expedition Society. They're such a sweet and cheerful Pokemon, though. I wanted to smack Pancham when he went "Ugh! Go away, you're so annoying!" when the partner just gave them a polite greeting. When they ask you to be their friend, I thought that was the cutest moment of the whole game.

I really liked the partner in Explorers-but that's for another thread.

PSMD's partner is also very likable. Their widely disliked capricious personality is amusing, although admittedly off-putting initially. I can't imagine that coming from a Snivy or Treecko (let alone the usage of "Pops"). But that personality is refreshingly childish and sincere. It's different to have such an explicit "cool blue" and "fiery red" personality dynamic among the hero and partner Pokemon. All the previous partners personalities seem to emulate aspects of each other right off the bat. However, I have to admit, the PSMD's partner seems to regress into the personality of previous partners as they mature throughout the story and lose less of their former brashness.

Anyway, it's cool that the PSMD partner actually has an immediate background and know the surrounding villagers/townspeople, rather than being a convenient orphan (Gates) or no background whatsoever (Red & Blue & Explorers). They even get their own theme song (which happens to be one my favorite Mystery Dunegon tracks)!

It's also arguably the central leitmotif for the entire game given how many reprises it gets. Like how Time Gear was the major leitmotif in Explorers, right down to the final dungeon and final boss music.

I'm a sucker for leitmotifs in general, so to hear it underscoring the final boss music here with the partner's theme immediately made it 3x more epic. Not unlike the final boss musics from Shovel Knight, FF6, and Okami, which were epic not just for their own sake but because they gave that one final touch to a recurring theme.

And of course, the final spoiler about the partner is something that does provide some insight into their brash and mischievous reputation. If they didn't grow out of it somewhat they probably wouldn't have been able to save the world at the end.

I'm not sure if I'd say I like PSMD's partner over PMD2's, but that's probably just me saying that because PMD2's ending tugged at my heartstrings a lot more than PSMD's did.

I am definitely appreciative of how the partner seemed to be a lot more fleshed out as an individual character though. Plus I have to just say that I'm a sucker for underdogs that go on to make a name for themselves.

PSMD's partner is probably my favorite partner ever. They're so endearing, funny, and entertaining. Though they're a bit stupid in the beginning, they make up for it with their overly energetic and bubbly personality imo. I also feel that they, go through the most development out of all PMD partners. They start out as an annoying troublemaker that almost everyone dislikes, but then grow into someone that people respect due to their never give up attitude and desire to protect everyone. Not to mention all of the intersting back story surrounding them, which no other partner has ever had anything close too.

And that ending was probably the best and saddest PMD ending for me. I'll be honest, I've never actually cried at a previous PMD ending before, but this one actually had me tearing up bit:p All in all, I love this partner.

I've not been able to get the game yet since I'm from Europe, but this partner has convinced me to definitely get the game once it arrives.
