I'm personally really excited about Heart Gold and Soul Silver. A remake of my favorite games in the series? Screenshots suggesting that Nintendo can read my mind? Yes please!

One thing that I can't seem to figure out, though.
What will the graphic for Surf look like?
I miss the old Red Lapras sprite your character magically turned into when Surf was used. The Gen III Wailmer was unattractive, as was the unassuming black blob in Gen IV.
Yet now, they always show the player graphic, even during a surf, so it'd be difficult to draw you on a Lapras. Or at least, more so.

Since Pokemon can follow you around now, it'd be neat if they'd just show the Pokemon you were surfing on, but this is both unlikely and impractical. After all, you can surf on some pretty weird Pokemon! It'd be silly to 'ride' on smaller ones.
Though, for the optimistic it is possible that they'll change your entire graphic into the surfing Pokemon, and hide the player sprite completely. Still unlikely, but similar to the graphic following you around, so possible.

What do you think they'll use? What would you prefer? Wasn't the Lapras graphic superior to the Whale-Blob?
Discuss.

I admit, that would be an amusing cop-out from having to draw so many new sprites.

I'd be a little dissapointed though, as using a conventional vehicle is a bit of a departure from the themes in Pokemon, ie having to use your pals to pass obstacles like that.
Plus Surf would then be replaced with a boat, and it'd be an item like the bike. ^.^;

But I guess I'm taking the joke too seriously.
Perhaps they'll introduce a boat-shaped legendary, exclusive to the remakes.

I've never really cared about the surf graphic, as I dislike having to surf. But it'd be pretty awesome, since now your pokemon follow you, for the surf slave to actually look like the pokemon it is.

It'll probably be the actual surfing pokemon this time around seeing how they're actually showing the critters perform hidden moves.

This.

Even though there are a lot of Pokémon that could never support the weight of a person, there's no reason they can show that Pokémon's sprite regardless when you're surfing.

I mean, look at it this way: Pidgey can't support a person, but you're able to fly all over the place with one.

It would be cool.... but how would u surf on a Totodile, or a Marill? Maybe you'll be shown swimming on their backs or something.....?

I actually was not aware of this.
Could you please point me in the direction of your source? I have to wonder how this is going to be done.

You mean like in the anime? That would look really nice, butalthough the character's limbs are too underdeveloped to be shown swimming and holding the Pokémon's back.

go to serebii.net and look at the pre realeased pics theres a chikorita performing cut

Thanks much for the link. I wouldn't have been able to navigate to it since it isn't in English.

I saw what's being referred to: a Tyranitar using Rock Smash. That's pretty exciting, I never really liked how it was done before.
Though they'd still have to draw some extra sprites for surfing, since it' be weird looking at their walking animations as they swam. At the very least they'll have to edit the walk graphics.

You'll probably just ride on the sprite of the actual Pokemon you're using. Or it will just be the sprite of the used Pokemon in place of the trainer.

Actually, I was referring to the Chikorita using cut.
