Oh, dread. The start of the new semester's around the corner...

So, here's the question: what do you think of Tablet PCs? Useful? Gimmicky?

If I do decide to get one, it would be mostly for notetaking in classes and programming. Currently in computer science and microbiology, I'm faced with a strange paradox, really...sheer power versus practicality (actually, this would also apply with computer science on its own, but exacerbated by the addition of microbi)...

So really then, it boils down to: should I get one?

Granted, I could have asked this on a Tablet PC forum, but then the bias would be overwhelming--obviously I would get answers from owners and would-be buyers who probably would have perceptually positive experiences about the technology...I certainly need more balanced opinions since it's going to leave a dent in my pocket...

I think... that there is little advantage. Unless you are the kind of student who draws lots and lots of diagrams (and even then pen & paper may be better - the sensitivity on touch screens isn't that great), the tablet isn't going to be useful. Indeed, it may even be faster to type.

Convertable Tablet PCs are better than Slate or UMPCs, since you like totally have a keyboard and you can totally make it into paper and pen...
