Prologue

Their was a long breeze that revived everyone, the feeling would only last a moment, but it was enough for the people to keep going on, that and the dream of starting a new life. A group of five hundred settlers were on this day, all leaving the Eastern World to settle in the west. They consisted of Slaves, and Outlaws, but mostly they were made up of hard working Low Classmen.

They were passing through what was at the time known as the Golden Fog Valley, it was a desalinate, quiet waste land. Only reptiles could live in the intense heat, and if the settlers didn’t hurry they would run out of supplies. They walked at a faster pace then normal, their wagons wheels rattling noisily as they traveled.

A young boy traveling with his family is forced to get out and pull his families wagons along with his older brother and father; his mother and sister kept inside. Although he was young, only at the age of seven, all men who could walk had to carry their own weight. The boy didn’t mind working at all opposed to the older boys, the responsibility was something he rarely was able to have, in fact, he had only pulled one other time unlike most of the other boys his age witch did so often.

It was time for a stop, most men went inside, while others would go near the walls of the cliff seeking shade from the intense heat. The boy was exhausted, sweat dripped into his eye and he rubbed it quickly. His father placed his hand atop his head, the boy glanced up and saw his father smiling slightly, the boy hid his exhaustion and gave off the biggest smile he could.

Suddenly his father glanced upwards, and his smile vanished, “No!” he began to shout, “Rebels! All men get your weapons!” he had forgotten all of his son at the moment, men jumped up and ran towards their wagons to gather their weapons, they had never expected an attack in this place.

“There is nothing we can do! They have the higher ground, and better weapons…how can we be expected to fight them like this?!” the first shot was fired from above, and a young girl who had been staring curiously was hit directly between the eyes, she was still for a moment, then her arms collapsed to her sides and she followed towards the ground.

The boy had only heard talk of these rebels and had no understanding of who they were or why he should be scared of them. Today, he would learn the hardest way imaginable.

“You animals!” the young girls father dropped his gun as he ran from his wagon, and raced to his daughters side. He held her for a moment, and tried to hold back his tears, until a bullet came from above, killing him just the same.

The real barrage began, and hundreds of shots were fired from above, only a few men among the settlers were ready, and they were quickly taken out after at most four shots. The boy just stared above, taking no notice to what was happening around him. He wanted to see these rebels, but the sun prevented him from making much of anything out.

His father jumped down from the wagon after telling his family to stay inside, but he had forgotten his youngest son. “Get inside…” there was another shot, and as the father extended his arm out, the boy looked back. His father’s voice was low, and quiet, he suddenly collapsed, he had been shot in the heart.

“Dad…dy…” he didn’t understand what was happening, his father was on his knees, knelt over, drops of blood came from his mouth as he gasped for air. The boy understood this, his father was in pain, he raced to his side, and knew he had been shot. He had never seen a person shot before, only animals.

“Daddy!” water came to his burning eyes. He came to his fathers side, and felt a terrible pain in his side, a pain like nothing he had experienced before. His father looked up, and gritted his teeth. His gone was near, and he grabbed it, and pointed it up, but he could not steady it. He fired randomly towards the men above, one fell over the edge after being hit.

“They are done, move in!” someone above shouted the order.

The boy lay under his father’s motionless body, eyes closed. He didn’t want to move, ever. The rebels rode down on horseback wherever they could, and raced inward. The boy opened his eyes in the commotion and saw his brother had come out after seeing their father fall. He took shots, but he let his extreme emotion make himself careless. One of the rebels with rags covering his entire body charged him, and he fired once more, missing. The attacker picked up his arm, and he fired again, this time he hit, but the rebel’s arm was in motion, it hit and cut cleanly, both died instantly.

` They began to set fire to the wagons, and the screams of those inside could be heard. “Burn them all! Make them suffer like us!”

“That voice again,” the boy thought. He opened his eyes, and above saw a large figure on horseback, he wore a rag over his head, but he threw it down, his eyes became narrow as the sun’s light came full force. His eyes met the boys, there was another breeze, but there was no revival in this. The man’s long black hair blew back slightly, and he reached for his gun which was strapped to the horse’s harness. He pulled the small pistol and aimed it below.

He had trouble steadying his weapon for a moment, but his eyes narrowed, and he regained control, “For them!” the shot wrung loudly for a moment, and then it all ended, “Let’s go! We are done here.”
