Team Rocket's Goals Need Prioritising...

Why do they continue to try and capture Pikachu when Viridian Forest is teeming with them? They have pokemon, they're aren't bad fighters, so why not catch a load and ship them straight "to da boss" as Meowth would put it? Or are Pikachu a lot rarer in the Anime than the Games? I can think of more common pokemon that would be better than Pikachu.

Ash's Pikachu has frequently been depicted as being exceptionally strong for its evolutionary level, and species in general. Meowth commented on this way back in Episode 2.

It's true that because of how long the series has run, for the newer fans it's kind of strange becaue the reasons that they want Pikachu are almost never touched on anymore. But every so often, when a member of Team Rocket appears to lose interest in catching Pikachu, the reason crops up again. Just look at "Get the Show on the Road"

Um, yeah, the "It's just a Pikachu" probably would have more bearing before it defeated a Regice among others...:p

Anyway, Team Rocket still don't have any problem with catching other Pokemon either, sometimes taking those over a chance to nab Pikachu.

Yeah, in the second episode, at first they weren't interested in Pikachu at all because they said it was too common. Then they found out it was powerful so kept going after it...

None, they never succeed. That's why Giovanni has trying to get rid of them multiple times. What's really sick is that they seemed to be a threat before running across Ash.

Team Rocket being more threatening than we know them now is more early-Kanto syndrome than anything else. They have the usual personalities in that flashback episode.

Anyway, even Paul thinks Ash's Pikachu is special and he thinks everything else about Ash is pathetic! So Team Rocket's interest isn't unusual.

Team Rocket got defeated by Caterpie in episode 3. They were never really meant to be a threat.

Man, and it took so long for Caterpie to evolve into Butterfree? He must've got a shit load of Exp. Points for beating a Koffing and an Ekans.

They're faces were plastered on wanted posters and the police sent out warnings when they approached. Clearly they were seen as a threat. Not to mention they thrashed through the Pokemon Center like they owned it.

The flash back episodes I think were part of inconsistancies in writing. The writer of episode 2 made them out to be coldhearted and bloodthirsty. They mellowed out after getting their heads handed to them every day of the week.

And they were turned into total losers when they got beat by Caterpie. Especially after they easily defeated Pigeotto and Pikachu.

The Caterpie defeat was in their second episode. Where did all those other defeats you mentioned happen?

I think Big Al was talking about the series in general, not just those two episodes when he said they began to mellow out.

I said they were turned into losers in ep 3. (Though not before beating Pigeotto and Pikachu). However, it took time for them to mellow out into the Team Rocket we know now. I'd say they got to that point in filler hell at the end of season 1.

The fastest way to ensure Giovanni will never see Pikachu is to make Giovanni a member of the E4 or the Pokemon Champion, because God knows Ash never gets that far. :p

The fastest way to get Pikachu to Giovanni would be for Giovanni to interrupt a transfer to Prof Oak's Lab or a Pokecenter.

Are Jessy and James still even part of Team Rocket? I seem to remember in one of those episodes during the months and months it would take Ash to get from one Johto gym to the next them coming across a Rocket recruiter that told them that since they hadn't been paying their membership dues, they were out of the organization.

They are part of Team Rocket. We've seen them talk to Giovanni via phone several times in Hoenn and in early Battle Frontier they went back to TR HQ's (wherever that is) and reported to Giovanni that Team Magma/Aqua were dissolved.
