GLOUCESTER, Mass. - A pact made by a group of teens to get pregnant and raise their babies together is at least partly behind a sudden spike in pregnancies at Gloucester High School, school officials said.

Principal Joseph Sullivan told Time magazine in a story published Wednesday that the girls confessed to making the pact after the school began investigating a rise in pregnancies that has left 17 girls at the school carrying a child. Normally, there are about four pregnancies a year at the school.

Sullivan told Time that nearly half of the expecting students, none over 16, were involved. Sullivan said students were coming to the school clinic multiple times to get pregnancy tests, and "seemed more upset when they weren't pregnant than when they were."

Some of the girls reacted to the news they were pregnant with high fives and plans for baby showers, Sullivan said. One of the fathers "is a 24-year-old homeless guy," Sullivan told the magazine.

Superintendent Christopher Farmer confirmed the deal to WBZ-TV, saying the girls had "an agreement to get pregnant."

He said the girls are generally "girls who lack self-esteem and have a lack of love in their life."

Mayor Carolyn Kirk told The Associated Press on Friday that many factors are involved in the surge in pregnancies in her community, a hardscrabble fishing village which has fallen on tough economic times and cut teachers and services, including some health classes.

"I don't think there was a pact in the order of a dozen girls conspiring to get pregnant. That would really surprise me, and I have seen no evidence of it," she said.

Christen Callahan, a former Gloucester High School student who had a child when she was 15, said on NBC's "Today" show that some of the girls would ask her about her own pregnancy.

"They would say stuff like, oh, I think my parents would be fine with it and they would help me, stuff like that," Callahan said.

But she said she had no firsthand knowledge of a pact between the girls to get pregnant.

"They were just kind of like curious about it, they never actually came out and said it," Callahan said.

The first reports of the students' apparent plan to get pregnant were in the Gloucester Daily Times in March, when Sullivan said students were reporting that the girls were getting pregnant on purpose.

The rash of pregnancies has shaken the seaside city about 30 miles north of Boston. Last month, two officials at the high school health center resigned to protest the resistance from the local hospital to the confidential distribution of contraceptives. The hospital administers the state money that funds the clinic.

Lousy parents, sad kids, and a spike in global population. Dear god, people are stupid.

So many women are taught having children is such a positive experience that many of them literally think it will solve all of their life's problems.

My god, do those girl have either grain of sense in their little minds? Don't they have anything else better to do?

On CNN.com or FoxNews.com's take on this, they mentioned the father of one of the babies was a 24-year-old homeless man. Just...adds a different level to the story.

These girls need to understand that parenting an infant is a 24/7 job and that baby showers (which are technically quite boring) are only one aspect.

I couldn't agree more Barb. I actually think this is terrible that kids no older than 16 are getting pregnant and are proud of it. Do they realize that once they have these kids that they have to take care of them? That they have to feed them and provide shelter? Do they ever take that into consideration? And the thing that really makes me sick is when they have these kids most of them can't afford them so they leach off of welfare, which I think is wrong. They aren't even old enough to take care of themselves and yet they're having kids? Anyone else see what's wrong with this picture?

Rather selfish reason to bring someone into this world, all because of some stupid pact.

And also to that one girl: Good luck getting someone once they find out you were desperate enough to have child by some homeless man.

Eh, she obviously doesn't have high standards, so I'm sure ANYONE who's willing to pay her any attention will do.

Actually, I'd like to add something relevant to this topic. NBC is going to air a new show on Wednesday 9/8c called The Baby Borrowers. From the looks of this new show I think it'd be a good show for all these teens that want to get pregnant and what it's like to take care of a baby. Basically these teens are given babies that they have to take care of just as if they were that baby's parents. I just think that if these girls saw what they had to go through to take care of these kids, maybe they'd think twice before getting pregnant.

Their kids have done nothing to deserve the life they're going to be brought into, and that's the saddest part.

The most annoying thing is that in the U.K, it actually does.

We get kids all the time getting pregnant, just so that they can drop school, have a nice house, and get tons of free money (guess whose?) just because they can't be 'bothered'. Heck, at least these people want to get pregnant for the child, and not for the money.
But yeah, in the end, the real victim here is the poor child...
(AND me, who wants his friggin money back!)

The US is the opposite. You could be dying on the street and unless you had your own money the government wouldn't raise a finger to help you. We really need to find a happy medium between these two extremes.

*winces* Poor kids. If they actually go through with their insane, insane plan, they're going to be screwed for life. And if they realise how insane they're being... well, abortions are no fun for anyone, I'm sure.

??? I was not aware of this. Is that true?

I'd rather my tax money fund single mothers and their spawn than politicians' lunches, I must say. It's all very well complaining about teenage girls 'selfishly' getting pregnant and then demanding their society support them (how dare they!!!) but what's the alternative? Let 'em starve, and their babies, too?

It's the American way!

Lol, along with abstinence-only sex-ed and pharmacists refusing to dispense the morning-after pill.

Sorry, shouldn't bitch about America too much, given that Britain just came perilously close to reducing the time-limit on abortions. In some ways, these kids aren't so badly off - at least they want to be pregnant, and have some kind of half-assed plan for what they're going to do once the babies are born. Not everybody has even that much.

Jesus, can't those girls wait until they graduated? Hope they like trying to support themselves and their child on a miniscule salary when they get older. Friggin idiots.
