Whoever enabled unregistered posting, I THANK YOU!!! I guess my bitching about it paid off after all.

I've been reading the "New VAs Discussion" thread in the anime forum. Just a couple of posts from unregistered guests have revived a vigorous argument in a moribund thread where the posts were the same old-same old.

Who knows. You might get another gadfly or someone with another point of view registering as a member.

Yeah, you were right gadfly!! ^^

That's so weird, it's like you predicted the future or something, lol. XD

I was so surprised by the many different Unregistered guests we had posting there, all on the same day as well. It confused me though, cause I didn't know which one was which, or who to believe.

Maybe it was too much of a coincendence. I think one of our regular members might've been doing it.

I don't see what there is to celebrate. I think Unregistered posting is a horrible idea and should be done away with.

You see, inspector? I was right! The butler did it!

...

No, not the Great Butler. That wouldn't make much sense.

Eh, Dogasu just wants a name to connect to someone criticizing him.

Yet another reason to allow unregistered posting. Some times it's a good thing to say something you don't want connected to you. I mean, how many times does something like an "unidentified administration source" appear in the news? Isn't that how the status quo gets shaken?

I'm still on the case, but only until next Saturday. And until next Sunday, I'm gonna slack off and not do anything about it. That's why they call be Inspector XD375.

It wouldn't help actually. While the average member wouldn't know who you were, the admins and mods could quickly check your IP, and/or trace a proxy. Anyone who tried to get around the rules and avoid sanction by posting something as a guest would get stomped on very quickly.

Yeah, I forgot to mention that one! Being a former admin of a similar forum before it died, I should know on a first hand experience.

And this is a good thing? You might enjoy it, but most of us are getting really tired of this debate.

Actually from what I can tell, most of the mod staff is against unregistered posting.

I don't like the idea of Unregistered posting! But I understand if Archaic wants to keep it on, as it is his forum.

Correct. I seem to be the only one who's not against it on principle. ^^;;

Bulbagarden is possibly the only major Pokémon forum to have ever allowed unregistered posting. I'm still not sure if it's a good idea in the end or not. I certainly wouldn't want to have it constantly enabled. It'd just be asking for trouble to have it enabled during the holiday season.

On the topic of the VA discussion, BTW, there's serious suggestion that we might just move that entire thread to the Hall of Shame and be done with it.

Woah, really?

I didn't know that, Archaic......

Are you thinking of doing that because of what happened with the Unregistered guests posting in that thread? Was it because one of them basically flamed me and SOVA?

Or is it just because the thread is getting way too out of hand, and it's hard for everyone to control what goes on in there?

Because SOVA is an embarrasement to the Pokémon Community. Sorry I had to say that, but most people make fun of you guys these days.

Sorry I had to say that, but it's true. I actually support SOVA (Other than Eric's James), but I don't make it my life like some do.

Also, the thread IS way out of hand, too many people flaming and calling people names such as "broken record" just because they want to express thereself but nobody other than me seems to care.

While I prefer most of the old voices, I've known all hope was gone since the beginning, since January when we found out about the switch and I speculated this.

Sorry. I feel bad about saying this.

Hopefully, this thread won't become a place to discuss saving SOVA and the VA thread, and we can get back on the topic of Unregistered posting.

Not to make this thread thread SOVA related or anything (I have no intention of doing that). But I just have to ask this.

No offense, but why would SOVA be an embarrassment to the community?

We haven't done anything that would allow bad things to happen.

All we've been trying to do is shoot for a certain goal (getting the VAs back). Sure most people have probably given up on that idea, and that's fine too.

But there is nothing wrong with having a goal and expressing your feelings to the people in charge by sending in letters.

If anything, the Pokemon community should feel proud and appreciate the fact that it has fans who would be willing to go to any lengths to do something they truly believe they can achieve. People should look at SOVA with an open mind and realize that we were hurt by the VA switch just as bad as the VAs themselves were. This deeply saddened many of us and our hearts were crushed. And another thing, in my opinion, it seems as if SOVA carries across the main themes of Pokemon: always believe in yourself, have courage, and keep trying to achieve your goal no matter what happens.

*end of SOVA talk*

Okay, back to talking about Unregistered guests again. ^^

I'm not sure why, but I like the idea of having anonymous people around. It makes things more interesting.

People think you guys waste time, money (for stamps and envelopes), and life.

While I like your goals and support them, a lot of others do not.

Yes, I know many people believe that.

However, like I told that Unregistered guy (the one who flamed me in the VA thread), we have a right to send letters if we want to and absolutely no one can stop us from doing that.

Okay, now that I've said that, we can get back on topic and continue talking about Unregistered guests. ^^

True enough. I have absolutely no problem with an admin or mod stomping on an abusive guest or a registered member posing as a guest.

However, it seems to me nearly all the abuse has come from registered members, some who registered specifically to flame or spam with the full expectation of being banned. Is it fair to lump all guests in with the flamers and spammers when by and large, the unregistered guests have been mostly respectful, made whatever point or asked whatever question they wanted, and have gone never to come again?

Again, I raise the question that nobody seems to want to answer: How much trouble have we had with unregistered guests?

As am I. I wish the new VA discussion would go away.

My point was that it took just a few posts from unregistered guests to launch pages of discussion within a day. Couldn't the same thing happen in a more current topic? The anonymous post could come from someone in a position to know something, but wishes to be unidentified. Do we want to foreclose that possibility, no matter how unlikely it is?

Understandably so. If everyone knows everybody else--or can tie a username to someone--you have a community. The downside is that like in all communities, an informal standard of behavior and thought emerges. It makes things so much easier and comfortable when most people are of like mind and opinion.

Hence, why I strongly support posting by unregistered guests. It rattles the cages of people, preventing them from falling into ruts and complacency. If an unregistered guest posts something controversial, you can't attack the poster. You have to address whatever is in the posting and I see nothing bad about it.

I thank you, sir.

Moving it into the Hall of Shame seems extreme. The thread doesn't seem to measure up to the other threads there. If somebody wants to end discussion about the new VAs, wouldn't it be simpler and more respectful to the people who earnestly posted in it to simply close the thread?

Please note: The thread is from 19 years ago.
Please take the age of this thread into consideration in writing your reply. Depending on what exactly you wanted to say, you may want to consider if it would be better to post a new thread instead.
