The 2007 word of the year is...

w00t!

Associated Press said:
Expect cheers among hardcore online game enthusiasts when they learn Merriam-Webster's Word of the Year. Or, more accurately, expect them to "w00t."

"W00t," a hybrid of letters and numbers used by gamers as an exclamation of happiness, topped all other terms in the Springfield dictionary publisher's online poll for the word that best sums up 2007.

Merriam-Webster's president, John Morse, said "w00t" was an ideal choice because it blends whimsy and new technology.

"It shows a really interesting thing that's going on in language. It's a term that's arrived only because we're now communicating electronically with each other," Morse said.

Gamers commonly substitute numbers and symbols for the letters they resemble, Morse says, creating what they call "l33t speak" - that's "leet" when spoken, short for "elite" to the rest of the world.

I think it is only w00t with the zeros that counts.

So three w00ts for w00t!

w00t w00t w00t!

lol

w00t, w00t, w00t! (prepare to see plenty of noob talk.)

But its so out dated and overused, at least in internet years.

I'm not sure a poll is adequate enough to allow for a term to become added to a dictionary as reputable as Merriam-Webster. But really, w00t? Then again, that doesn't mean the word is part of the official English language now, does it?

Just to warn you, I will be using this word a lot more sorry!

L4wlz. Teh n00bs will be using w00t as much as they use ub3r5.

That's funny, actually just a couple weeks ago I started hearing it in real life for the first time.

Also, some words are only correctly spelled with numbers. Like the movie "Se7en"... okay, bad example but I know there are more such cases.

I actually hear people using "w00t" in real life nowadays. o_O;
I heard el-oh-el at college. I was also watching a medical show (Mystery Diagnosis?) where the woman they were talking about said oh-em-gee.

...I myself occasionally say lol ("lawl") and rofl ("rawful")/roflmao ("rawful mao").

N035 WHY T3H 1337 SP3LL1GN?! D=

Couldn't they have chosen the ordinary spelling instead? That's my major problem with this issue. ._.

First one of the guys from Something Awful translates Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, now this? I believe our near future involves banishing the english language and replacing it with l33t.

this makes me sick.

this is worse than colour without a U

worse than chips becoming fries and crisps becoming chips.

it's even worse than the "word" ain't

or the rising inflection infection

i really hate the bastardization of the english language by the colonies

If you're going to be complaining about the bastardization of language... always be sure to capitalize your sentences.

*shot*

I'm kidding! ;P

It definetly would have been better to use "woot", but it is kinda cool that it won. Wonder what the other options not mentioned in the article were...?
