For those who don't have Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald, obtaining the Deepseatooth and Deepseascale to turn Clamperl into respectively, Huntail and Gorebyss, is a hard task. In order to obtain Deepseatooths/scales in Diamond/Pearl, you're going to have to fish alot of Pokemon. For Tooths, its Carvanha/Sharpedo, and for the Scales, it's on Chinchou/Lanturn/Relicanth
Now, I set out on this task to get this Evolution items, packed my boredom with me, and well here's how it went.
Deepseascale:
In my opinion, this was the easiest. The pokemon that may be holding a Deepseascale when you catch it is.. like I said before, Relicanth, Lanturn and Chinchou. Of course, with Relicanth being a rare pokemon to fish out of Route 226, this leaves Chinchou/Lanturn, found on Route 220(near Pal park). With Chinchou have a 30% fish rate, and Lanturn being 5%, it's about a 1/3 chance the Pokemon on your fish line will be a Chinchou evolution. Now that's the easy part.
The hard part is that the Deepseascale has a 5% chance of being on any Chinchou/Lanturn you catch, which leaves you with.... fishing alot of Chinchou/Lanturn.
All you really need for this excursion is:
-Super Rod, preferably.
-Bottomless bag of Net balls
-Some open box space(and the willingness to release Pokemon)
-Pokemon that knows surf
-A Pokemon that knows False Swipe(notably.. Scyther learns at Lvl.13, Nincanda at Lvl. 25, and Marowak at Lvl.27). False Swipe never KO's your opponent, leaves it with 1 HP, thus effective for catching our Chinchous.
With that, with the 5% chance rate, i'd say that maybe 20 Chinchous/Lanturns will generate atleast 1 Deepseascale. Of course, you can go catch a Chinchou, and then go back to the PC Box in Pal Park and see if it's holding the scale, but that'll take forever. I suggest the assembly line approach, catch a large amount of Chinchous/Lanturns, go into your box, and if they don't have any Scales, dump them. Then continue on until you obtain it.
To prove my point, well I actually only did one experiment so far(I didn't feel like doing anymore after I got it), and it went like this:
Try 1: 15 Chinchous/3 Lanturns - Output: 1 Deepseascale.
Deepseatooth:
Deepseatooth is alot more frustrating than the scale for me. This is because you must obtain it from Carvanha/Sharpedo. Sharpedo is simply too hard to get, 5% fish rate at Route 213/222. This leaves Carvanha, which has a 35% fish rate at every pond in the Great Marsh(I suggest the 1st one to the right).
With the Deepseatooth being 5% chance on any Carvanha.. I also suggest alot of fishing in the Great Marsh.
All you need is:
-Super Rod, preferably
-Box Space..Willingness to release Pokemon
-500 Poke(c'mon.. don't tell me you bought that 999,999 Ribbon and didn't get any more money!)
-Patience, alot of it.
Since catching pokemon in the Great Marsh is simply luck, catching Carvanha.. and infact even finding them can be frustrating. And since you can't go back and forth to your PC Box, seeing if you have any Tooths, then you are only left with the decision of using all 30 Safari Balls.
With that said.. I experimented with this 5 times and here's the results:
Try 1: 12 Carvanhas/30 Safari Balls - 1 Deepseatooth
Try 2: 13 Carvanhas/30 Safari Balls - 0 Deepseatooths
Try 3: 15 Carvanhas/30 Safari Balls - 0 Deepseatooths
Try 4: 15 Carvanhas/30 Safari Balls - 2 Deepseatooths
Try 5: 16 Carvanhas/28 Safari Balls(yeah.. drooped two on Gyarados by accident) - 0 Deepseatooths
As seen.. it's a bit of luck, and actually finding Carvanha and using up all 30 Safari Balls.. takes about half-an-hour.
All and all, it's frustrating, but it feels great when you know that you obtained a Deepseatooth or Deepseascale. Since catching Carvanhas is a bit of luck, getting the Deepseascale is alot easier thanks to Chinchou's availability at Route 220. Hey it could be worse, you could be trying to get Electrilizers and Magmarizers from wild Elekid/Magby. Hehe.
Cheers,
