Title says it all, yes?

But anyway, I shall elaborate. The Pokémon cartoon is, as you know, drawn and animated, and as such the artists have their own style of art.

In other words, how the artists create the environment, characters, and effects.

Take into account the budget as well as your personal preferences.

Do you like it? What would make it better?

I generally like it, but when it comes to the more epic storylines I wish it would be more detailed and feature more animation.
For example the Kyogre/Groudon story arc was completely let down because its animation simply couldn't match up to the epicness of the battle.
Almost every shot of both Pokemon was a pan over a still image coupled with a roaring sound effect. This can work in normal episodes, but when it's something that big, then it really stands out in a bad way.
Though that's the only time that I've ever really noticed the animation in a bad way. Generally I'm very happy with it all!

I wish they could make the animation smoother.

You can tell when they're animating badly so that they can animate a scene later well. ie: reused animation, still shots and suddenly theres a scene with fluid animation and then it goes back to choppyness.

I do like the backgrounds though.

Yeah, I wish it was animated in more detail like some other animes, but I understand why it isn't I suppose.

It isn't realistic, but I wish the movie animation was the norm.

With this new generation, I really feel like the quality of the animation as a whole has gone down. Some episodes I feel like they care, and other ones I feel like they couldn't be bothered. I remember in one particular episode, they showed Beedrill flying out of the brush in a swarm, but they couldn't even be bothered to animate the wings. Things like that bother me.

And while I realize the thick lines and simple colors are simply things that come with animated in a more digital environment, sometimes it's like the characters are just drawn on top of a pretty background. WITH THICK BLACK MARKER.

Also, as aforementioned in this thread, they could make the animation a bit smoother. Especially during battles. Usually battles really aren't that bad, but sometimes... just, sometimes, I wonder if they even care. "Kids won't notice anyway!" Even children appreciate a well-drawn cartoon, I mean really. D:

I'm not hating on the anime completely. Just it's like that sometimes. [/disclaimer]

They have a seriously low budget for animation, hence why it looks rubbish almost every single ep.
The animation in this show sucks. The end.

Good concept = guaranteed viewers.
Guaranteed viewers are kids and therefore not that fussy about animation quality.
(Good music + good seiyuus... budget spent there?)

And basically, the less money spent, the more money made.

I actually have no problems at all with the animation... maybe at some rare cases I can agree that a few scenes here and there looked strange but that's it...
Also, while it could be better - you have to remember this show airs for more than 10 years and continue to air with a new episode every week (usually) and I guess it'd be hard to make it much better without causing us to get less episodes in a year
I prefer the show to continue nonstop rather than improve the animation but get like 26 eps in a year
I like it as it is now

The animation is okay, considering how low-budget it is. Being such a long-running weekly series, it's obvious that some episodes will look more crap than others. I mean, if they have Iwane and Tamagawa's teams animating anything, they'd run out of budget very quickly.

Man, though, if Iwane and Tamagawa were the only animation directors... that would've been like a wet dream or something.

I don't know :p If we got an ep every fortnight and it was an Iwane/Tamagawa standard, I would be happy with that!!

At least *touches wood* they seem to have gotten rid of Takeda :D

QFT <3

Like ii kanji said, QFT! Only Iwane & Tamagawa = win.

Get rid of all the crappy ADs. That should solve about half of the problem already.
This. Also QFT.

I'm already happy enough they apparently got rid of *ahem* I better not mention his name.

I personally think the animation is OK considering this anime has been airing for a long time, weekly at that. I've seen worse.

Its a weird thing
i dont know whats changed recently but i have noticed the animation has improved quite a bit lately
It seems to have the kinda detail it had back in Kanto to me

As long as the animation doesn't look like total crap, I'm fine with it. There is room for improvement, of course, but it's not like everyone in the world is a good animator.

The animation is adequate for the most part. I'm more often satisfied than I am displeased, which is good enough for a show like pokemon. I do wish they'd be a little more adventurous with facial expressions, poses and the like though. It's really only Natsume that seems particulary eager to go that route, which is a shame for a series with so many characters to take advantage of.

And the CG work? Yeah. Not a big fan. You know it's bad when even generic-glowy-blue-energy-balls Bubblebeam looked like it packed more of a punch than the current version.

It seems fine to me. Sure there is room for imporvement, but I agree with Piplup; its better to get episodes once a week like they are now (which isn't bad at all) then once a month with amazing quality. I really love the animation in the movies, but I guess the show would go bankrupt if all the episodes looked like that.

Actually, one of the things I like about the show most is it's animation and art style.

I even like the 3D scenes that are so badly incorporated that it can't help but be awkward.

Well... Exception: Attacks that are frequently 3D, like Bubblebeam or Swift.

The animation is okay for the most part - when it's good, it's really good, when it's bad...it's eh. My biggest complaint with the way the animation is heading is the use of CGI - that has to be more expensive than their usual animation(meaning that it's using precious animation budget that could go to better things) and it rarely looks very good. Really guys, just keep it in the movies. At least then you have a big enough budget to make decent looking CGI. Or at least stop it with the shitty looking Bubblebeams and Swifts. We won't mind. Really, we won't. Until you can make CGI that doesn't stick out like a sore thumb with gangrene, save your animation money and hire some more good AD's. We'll appreciate it.

I actually like the new Swift/Bubblebeam and others that went through this change and recently it seems like Water Gun changed too
So currently I have no complaints about it... I don't get why some hate it so much but I guess every one have their own opinions...
