As of XY 101, we witnessed that Ash will feel any pain that Greninja feels, only when he's in the Ash-Greninja form. We saw him collapse to his knees when Greninja did and this raises many questions. What does this mean, especially for the Kalos League? Will Ash have to make a last minute choice to sync up with Geninja and endure the pain, all so they can win a battle? Will Ash ultimately be knocked out cold through the connection?

I think that'll train his body to endure it which would help further his development too.

I'm just going to copy my tumblr post here.

So in the recent Team Flare episode, it featured Ash feeling pain when Ashgreninja got injured. This means they are connected not only mentally, but also physically. This is interesting, especially considering that the opening sequence had hinted at a possible conflict between Ash and Greninja.

Considering Ash’s personality, I doubt he’d hesitate going for Ashgreninja to win just because he feels the pain. Against other trainers, and even the League. From the battles he’s shown us during the course of XY, he’s an intelligent strategist, and has been choosing efficiency over simply throwing attacks after attacks. Ashgreninja is certainly a viable, efficient power-up to gain the upperhand in battles, so I doubt Ash would have any reason not to use it. He’s never been shown to be afraid of getting hurt or injured.

But I think it would be different for Greninja.

Remember when Froakie felt bad when Ash got injured trying to save him early in the series? Froakie was reckless and refused to take orders, but after he saw Ash risking his own injury to take care of him, he stopped refusing orders and worked on listening to Ash to avoid any possible painful risks to his trainer.

Greninja might refuse to go fully in sync if he knows he’s hurting Ash when he’s the one receiving the attacks. Greninja could be able to endure a few cuts and burns, but it wouldn’t exactly be the same for Ash.

I think there will be a point where Ash is knocked out when Ashgreninja is knocked out, and it would possibly lead to Greninja refusing to go sync with him. Maybe that’s what the conflict in the opening sequence was hinting at?

Greninja refusing to go into the Ash-Greninja form because he's hurting Ash is actually a very plausible thought. Greninja chose Ash for a reason and he certainly was concerned when he saw Ash endure an injury BECAUSE of him, as a Froakie. If anything, Greninja wouldn't want Ash to be in any physical pain because of their connection.

What if the connection isn't one way, and Ash training to increase his body's endurance also subsequently adds to Greninja's endurance?
That'd be interesting indeed! It's fun that we'll can speculate about this and come up with our own ideas!

No matter how much Ash can take, I suspect that there will come a moment where Greninja puts his foot down. I believe that Greninja doesn't yet know of the implications of his new form.
I wouldn't be surprised if, during the expected league battle against Sawyer, Greninja forfeits against Mega Sceptile after taking a look at Ash following a Leaf Blade hit or something of the sort.

Oh please no!!
Geckouga can forfeit the match with Alan, the gym match or anything else. I'd even take a league forfeit against any opponent after Satoshi has beaten Shouta! But this... No. Nothing could be more humiliating!!

I'd personally have to agree with you there, but it sounds as though he's going to be the last current rival to fall. And we all remember what that led to in Sinnoh.
It's either this or we have Neo Tobias. Pick your poison, really... :/

Losing to someone like Tobias >>>>>>>>> Shota

I don't hate him but Shota should be like Morrison or Paul, Ash beats him in the top 4/top 8 and the lose against a mega trainer for example.

I'd honestly rather see Ash lose to Sawyer over a Neo Tobias. If Greninja decided to give up for Ash's sake, I'd be okay with it cause I actually like Sawyer.
After the Laverre City arc shoved it down our faces how much further along Ash is in Kalos compared to Sawyer (Only one badge at the time compared to Ash's 5, then 6), Greninja forfeiting should be the only reason for Ash to end up losing to him. Sceptile actually winning is what would grind my gears because we all know that Ash is far more experienced and competant, especially in this series.

I think we can definitely see Ash fainting from the sensory connection, but I think he will go through some training thing where he will gain mastery of it and not faint by the time we get to the league (maybe desynching just before Greninja faints?)

Knowing how the writers work I can actually see him beating Alain then losing to Sawyer. Sawyer is a rookie newbie yeah, but he could be similar to the player character in game, who rapidly goes from novice to absolute legend in the space of their journey.

I think the anime is trying to show that Sawyer is the anime's version of Wally. The rookie who always loses at first, but soon starts to catch up with the player, or in this case, Ash. By now, Sawyer has 5 badges and we know he'll get a Mega Sceptile. I wouldn't be surprised if he is strong enough to beat Ash by the league, even if Ash has more experience battling. I could see a battle between Mega Sceptile and Ash-Greninja going down and maybe even Greninja forfeiting for Ash's sake.
