So I didn't even know about this movie. I had noticed how many recent Marvel superhero movies were coming out over the past few years, with Iron Man, Hulk, etc.

And there's apparently going to be more...Captain America, Thor, etc. movies to come before it all culminates with the Avengers in May 2012!

The best part is that all the same actors from the separate movies are reportedly slated to star together! There's rumors that certain X-men will make cameos too!

Holy crap I'm excited.

Has anyone else heard about this and if so...do you guys know who's going to be in it in terms of characters?

edit: oops didn't realize there was already a thread that mentioned the movie...but maybe this one can be a more general discussion about the movie...my bad.

Well, the X-Men rumor can't be true because FOX has the movie rights to that Marvel franchise and I don't think they would let any of the X-Men characters appear in the Avengers.

Currently, the Avengers movie is going to come out in 2012 and there has been build up already because both Iron Man and the Incredible Hulk movies from last summer already had "hints" about it. The upcoming Captain America and Thor movies will also be in this same "shared continuity" and will continue the lead-up to the Avengers movie.

Spider-Man and Wolverine were in the Avengers for a very short time. Generally, the X-men characters that are considered "real avengers" (as in they spent significant time with the team) are Beast, Scarlet Witch, and Quicksilver.

The classic Avengers lineup is leader Captain America, Iron Man, Ant-Man, the Wasp, Thor, and Hulk when he's not too pissed off. This is probably the basic lineup they'd use for the movie, but possibly with Hulk removed because he never sticks around much due to being totally nuts.

The team has been through dozens of members and incarnations, but aside from the core members above, the main Avengers are generally considered to be: Hawkeye, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, Vision, Beast, and Ms. Marvel. Other popular members are Black Widow, Wonderman, Luke Cage, and Spider-Woman.

Since they're going with the Ultimates depiction of the team, we'll probably see Nick Fury/Samuel L. Jackson as their commander and the team working for SHIELD.

In regards to the movie line-up, I'd expect to see Captain America, Iron Man, Ant-Man, the Wasp, Thor and perhaps one or two other characters that would not have been introduced beforehand.

Spider-Man's been an official Avenger twice. The first time, he was just a reserve member (but was briefly called into active duty shortly after, largely just cleaning up the mess caused by the enemy the main team was fighting), but he was later made a regular when the New Avengers team was formed (and he's been a member ever since). Wolverine's only been an Avenger since he joined the New Avengers. But, yeah, Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, and Beast served the longest as Avengers of all the mutants (with Justice and Firestar being the only other mutants. Well...technically Namor as well).

The initial Avengers line-up was Hulk, Thor, Wasp, Ant-Man, and Iron Man. Hulk left after one or two adventures and Captain America was retroactively made a founder. From everything that's been said, the Thor, Iron Man, Incredible Hulk, and Captain America movies will all lead into the Avengers movie (no word on how the Ant-Man movie's coming along or if he'll be in the Avengers movie). And, within those movies, we've seen, or will see, Black Widow and James Rhodes (who, as Iron Man and War Machine, was briefly an Avenger twice, both times with the West Coast team), with Don Cheadle (playing James Rhodes as of Iron Man 2) confirmed to also be in the Avengers movie in some capacity. Whether Scarlet Johannson (playing Black Widow) will be in the Avengers movie is anyone's guess.

Beast has never really considered a "main" Avenger (his tenure was fairly brief, and aside from the occasional help in major crises, he's never returned to being a member). And Spider-Woman's tenure has been too short for her to be a popular member (she's as popular a member as Dr. Strange, really). I'd throw Hercules, Black Knight, and She-Hulk into the "popular" category, though. And there are a number of others who are popular, but not so much as Avengers (Moon Knight, Captain Marvel, Thing, Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman,Namor, and the original Human Torch).

Since they're going with the Ultimates depiction of the team, we'll probably see Nick Fury/Samuel L. Jackson as their commander and the team working for SHIELD.

Yeah, we'll probably see a merging of the Avengers/Ultimates stories (maybe Fury brings them together, but they fight Loki in their first battle).

The choice of a villain will make or break the movie. The psuedoSkrulls in the animated movie didn't work well at all because they were just too generic and most of the movie was spent fighting the Hulk. I think Loki or Kang the Conqueror would be the only ones audiences would take seriously/make for a compelling movie. They might want to adjust the cast a bit to make sure it's not a total copy of Ultimate Avengers, though - since the lineup they have now seems to be going in that direction.

A big part of me would like to see Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch added to the team for the movie, introduced in Avengers and just have everyone note they're the infamous Magneto's kids, but I'm not sure how the legalities of such a set-up would work with Fox owning movie rights to the X-men, but Quicksilver and SW are sort of in limbo as what Marvel property they belong to more. It would also introduce another female hero to the movie Marvel universe . . . so yeah, personally if I was doing the movie I'd go with Nick Fury as commander, Captain America as field leader, and Iron Man, Ant-Man (with both Ant-Man AND Giant-Man powers), Wasp, Thor, Black Widow, Quicksilver, and Scarlet Witch. I'm just not sure how to work Hulk in without having him totally monopolize the movie, since the fact that he's such a burden to any team he's on is a major part of the character. And Spider-Man and Wolverine fit better in their own series than as Avengers members, I think.

But the best thing about this plan is that 90% of team properties have to spend half the movie introducing each team member, their motivations and backstories and the like. Marvel is going to be able to skip all that aside from maybe 3 characters and get straight into the narrative.

Kang would be an interesting choice, but they'd have to overly-simplify him. Kang isn't fun unless you get a headache thinking about him, Iron Lad, Immortus, and how that all works.

Honestly, they coudl always just pit them all against the Hulk in a containment operation. There's also the "Masters of Evil" approach. Throw in Abomination, Whiplash, whoever Cap faces (unless it's just Red Skull...but he could be the leader), and whoever Thor faces and let them brawl it out. Cuts out the need to explain the villain, and lets you focus on them getting together. Or they could always sneak in Magneto, Dr. Doom, or Galactus. Would, again, save them having to explain the villain, and give a big enough believable solo threat.

Eh, Scarlet Witch is safely in the Avengers family. I mean, outside of her first few appearances as a member of the Brotherhood, she's almost exclusively appeared in Avengers comics (House of M only made sense because her brother and father were mutants). Quicksilver you're right about, though. He keeps going back and forth between Avengers books and X-books (about as often as he goes between hero and villain).

Ant-Man with Ant-Man/Giant-Man powers? So, basically, a more contemporary Hank Pym? As long as he's not stuck at 12 feet, I'll be happy.

Yeah, I'd agree. Though, look at Iron Man. Iron Man was a HUGE success. And he'll have a second movie under his belt going into this. The big issue they'll have here is if Thor or Captain America bomb. Especially since the script for Avengers will largely be written by that point, and they'll likely have shot the majority of it (if they're not COMPLETELY done with it) by the time Captain America is released. If Cap bombs...they'll likely need the Hulk's star power to keep people interested.

Definitely. And I think that's why Marvel's been smart with this. As unlikely as it is, I'm hoping they'll do something similar when they work their way down to the New Warriors (though they're wanting a team of writers to work on lesser properties, including Cable, so New Warriors isn't THAT unlikely).

well if they go with the original avengers, then they have to make their costumes look alot better. but i hope they go with some new avengers along with just a few originals. like this.
