Hi, everyone! Bluntasaur here.

I know everyone's eagerly awaiting the release of Chapter 3 of Pokemon Academy, and I assure you, I'm hard at work on it.

But in the meantime, here's something to tide you all over.

I was critiquing a fic on another forum, and it inspired me to do this little one-shot fic. Take a gander, and lemme know what you think.

The Ball

A one-shot fic by Bluntasaur

A Pokeball. I know what it is. And why wouldn't I? I've spent half my life in one. In fact, I'm in one right now. Hell, everyone and their great aunt Bessie knows what a Pokeball is. It's an orb-like machine that human trainers use to capture Pokemon like me, carry us around, and call us out when they need to.

But ever since I was hatched, I felt like I had a question about the Pokeball. I don't know what that question is, but I have the constant nagging feeling that I just HAVE to know the answer to it. It all goes back the the first time I saw one.

It was shortly after the day I was hatched. A tall man in overalls tapped me on the head with one. My body felt all warm, and then I turned into some weird red light as I was sucked in. I was scared at first, but then, there was something weird.

It was an odd feling that washed over me. It was almost like I was awake and asleep at the same time. It was like being back in the egg, but different somehow.

I don't remember how long I was in there, but before I knew it, someone let me out. Next thing I knew, I was standing on a table in a strange room lined with all sorts of strange things. Suddenly, a heavy-set man in shorts and a long white coat came up to me. He picked me up and smiled, saying something about how healthy I looked, and how I would make a great starter.

For the next few days, I stayed in the back garden of the strange building. While I was there, I met two other Pokemon. A green one named Treecko, and a blue one named Mudkip. I asked then how they got here, and I was shocked to find that they were brought there in a Pokeball, like me. I had so many questions, and I asked just about all of them. Unfortunately, Treecko and Mudkip were just as much in the dark as I was.

The white-coated man took good care of us. He stuffed us with good food, and every now and then, he used these weird machines to check if we were healthy. When we weren't in the lab, I ran around and played with Treecko and Mudkip. The man would put us back in the Pokeballs when we got tired, but I didn't think much about it.

But then, one day, something strange happened.

Treecko, Mudkip, and I were standing on the table in the building, when suddenly, an odd boy came in.

He had white pants and wore a white jacket over a black shirt, with a strange gold amulet around his neck. He had the top of his head wrapped in a red cloth, with another one tied around his arm.

He was standing next to the white-coated man, who asked the boy which one of us he wanted to pick. He stood there for a moment, and then pointed to me, saying "I've got it! I choose Torchic!"

The white coated man gave the boy the ball, and once again, I was drawn back in. But this time, it felt different.

Images and thoughts suddenly rushed into my head. I suddenly knew the boy's name, which was Mike. I knew then names of the powers I had. I knew that I was Mike's partner now, and it was my job to be there for him, and follow his orders. But more than all those things, I felt something else. Something wonderful. I could feel Mike's thoughts.

This is awesome! My very first Pokemon! And it's such a cool one, too! With this bad boy at my side, I'll become an awesome trainer!

It was then that my unknown question began to form. Why did these thoughts fill my head as soon as I entered the ball? What was it about the ball that made me his partner? How did the strange machine convey his thoughts to me, and convinced me that he wanted to be my friend?

I remained in the ball with Mike for a time as he travelled the land. Like the man at the lab, he let me out every now and then to eat and get some exercise. Sometimes, he would let me out just because he felt like I wanted to come out. And he was usually right.

Shortly after we departed, something happened that caused my question to finally take form.

Mike let me out of the Pokeball again, but this time, I found myself in a field, staring at a blue bird Pokemon. Before I could react, Mike called for me to use Ember. Without even thinking about it, I did as he ordered, and shot my flame bullets at the bird. They hit their mark, but the bird became angry and attacked me. I wanted to flee, but Mike yelled, "Don't give up, Torchic! Use a Quick Attack!" Again, I moved without thinking, and dashed toward the bird at blinding speed, slamming into it hard. As the bird tried to struggle to its feet, I heard Mike yell, "Now's our chance! Finish it with Ember!" I obeyed, and this time, the flame bullets hit the bird and rendered it unconscious. Right then, Mike removed another Pokeball from his belt, and threw it at the bird. It sucked the bird in just like it sucked me in. It wiggled for a few seconds, then stopped. Mike was ecstatic.

"All right!" he cheered. "I caught a Taillow!" He then ran toward me and hugged me. "Great job, Torchic! You were awesome!"

He really did care. Maybe the Pokeball was telling the truth.

Later that day, we rested in a park, and Mike let out the bird he had captured. At first, I was a bit scared, but then it smiled at me. It told me that it's name was Taillow, and that it was happy be Mike's new friend. It also told me that it was happy to meet me, and that it wanted to be my friend, too.

My friend? But I was just fighting you before.

It was then that my question finally took form.

We all know what a Pokeball it, but I wanna know what it REALLY is.

What is the true power of this strange ball? How can it turn a wild creature into a human's friend? How did it turn ME into Mike's friend?

Is it some psychic power that hypnotizes us into obeying humans? Is it some mental telepathy that connect our minds with that of the human that uses it? Or could it even be an extension of the human's heart and soul?

Is it really just a convenient tool for carrying us Pokemon around, or is it something more?

I can't ask Mike, because he doesn't speak my language. And even if he did, I doubt he would know either. And neither Treecko nor Mudkip nor Taillow knew.

Maybe someday I'll find the answer, and maybe I won't.

But I DO know that it hasn't lied to me yet. It told me Mike wanted to be my friend, and he did.

So for now, I'm just gonna trust it.

THE END.

One of the great mysteries of Pokemon, written very nicely. Simple, but then again since none of them understand what's happening it has to be simple. Well done. XD

Very thought-provoking. I like it. It certainly does make the reader think about the questions it raises.

THis is a great story. You did have a couple spelling mistakes, (like only two) but it's a great story. It made me think about a lot of things. Infact, I am wondering the different effects it has on Pokemon that have lived in the wild for most of their lives, versus those, like the Torchic, that was immediately put in a ball after birth.

It is nice to not see this be turned into a 'OMG pokemon are SLAVES' fic :P. IMHO there are far too many of those sort of fics around lately. What was once a new and 'dark' idea has become as commonly badly written as a trainer fic :\

What's ironic is that the fic that inspired me to write this was done in that fashion.
