Between Hoenn and Johto lies an island, named Utropica Island. You've probably never heard of it though, as humans rarely set foot on here. It once featured not only forests and lakes, but also mountainous regions and even a sleeping volcano, making it the perfect habitat for many different Pokémon. As such, it became a paradise for all kinds of Pokémon.
But it couldn't last.
A meteor from space crashed into the ocean, near the island. As a result, the island's sleeping volcano was activated, destroying all that could not escape this disaster.
After these terrible events, the island was completely deserted, barren of all life.
No trees and plant life to provide shade and food and the water that was left was toxic, undrinkable.
Months passed and nothing changed. The months slowly became years, but the island was still a wasteland.
And now, almost twenty years later, the situation is still the same, which is considered odd.
An ecosystem like this should restore itself as time passes. But there hasn't been any progress. Something must be...different.

The professor fell silent and took a step back. The projector was still on, showing an aerial photograph of the island. The island was mostly a dark, dusty brown, with little black spots (volcanic rubble, you assumed) covering it. The volcano that had destroyed all was located at the north-point of the island, though it was now inactive. Further to the south were several large dark holes that once must have been lakes, but they seemed to have dried up. Completely down to the south point of the island was a large bay, surrounded by a thin border of yellow-ish brown, all what was left over from the beach.
The professor faced her audience again.
"This", she gestured to the picture behind her,"is why we have invited you tonight. We want you to travel to the island, not only to investigate, but also to help restore the island."
She paused again.
"To guarantee success, we have selected a wide range of professionals to carry out this mission. You will travel to the island by ship."
She pushed one of the projector remote's buttons and the picture changed. A large ship appeared. S.S. Paradise was painted on its hull.
"The ship is not only fitted with all modern conveniences, like bathrooms, a kitchen and a large common room, but also has enough room for the different Pokémon species that will be released on the island. As long as you are on the island, this will be your home. Tomorrow, you will get a tour on the ship, to familiarize you with its structure. You will leave in two days time, everything has been prepared already. If there are no further questions, you are dismissed now."

Now I hopefully have sufficiently set the mood for this roleplay, we'll get on to the rules and other necessary tid-bits to get this flowing.
So, lets get to the rules and guidelines first, I'll try to keep everything simple. It's probably nothing new, but at least take a look at them.
- First, off all, the Bulbagarden forum rules. It's probably a given you've to follow them, so do that.
- This will be, what I call a literate roleplay. The term isn't widely used here, it seems, but it essentially means you're able to produce coherent sentences, only make occassional grammar/spelling errors, your characters aren't Sues, don't god-mod, tennis or power-play. Guess you could call it a somewhat experienced roleplayer.
- On the topic of swearing. I'm fine with light swearing. Just make sure it stays within reason. Nothing too offending, don't overdo it and you should be fine.
- Next is romance. Just like swearing, keep it within reason. Hugging/kissing is fine, anything over that is a no. And if for some reason or another, you still want to take it past that, take it to PM.
- On the subject of doubling. I'm perfectly fine with it, unless a lot of people are interested in joining. If you want to add another character, please inform me before you do so.
- I don't like this one too much, as I hope we won't even need it. But my word is law. I have the right to kick you out of the roleplay, settle disagreements, all that stuff. But I hope it isn't necessary.
- If you want me to reserve a spot for you, I can do that for 48 at most. If you haven't posted a sign-up by then, I won't sae a spot for you any longer
- Lastly, respect for your fellow roleplayers (again, a given) and don't forget to have fun!
And if you've got any questions or remarks, feel free to post them here, or send me a PM.
Next thing on the list is the setting, as the characters will spend a great deal there.
I already touched the subject in the intro, but I figured a simple description couldn't do any harm.
The S.S. Paradise
The S.S. Paradise is a modern, medium-sized ship. It has four levels, two below, two above deck. From the bottom level to the top level:
BD2: The lowest level of the ship, it mainly harbours the engine rooms and storage rooms. There isn't really anything of interest here.
BD1: This level is partly above water, so there are portholes offering a view on the outside world and giving daylight the chance to come inside(Unlike BD2, where the only light is artificial). The Pokémon that will be released on the island are kept in the bow. Eggs are stored here as well and there's some sort of hatchery located here as well for the Pokémon Breeders. Most others work here as well, depending on their profession (as I don't know what kind of characters will be joining exactly, I can't say much more about this yet). The kitchen and cabins for the crew of the ship are located in the stern.
AD1: This is the first level completely above water. There's not much of interest outside on deck. You'll find the team's cabins here, showers (separate for man and woman, they were actually that considerate), a dining room (directly above the kitchen) and some sort of common room (situated next to the dinner room, so both are in the stern, cabins/showers are in the bow)
AD2: The top level is home to the bridge (in the bow) and a special meeting room, used for official stuff.
There's a big staircase in the middle of the ship (so between bow and stern), giving easy access to all levels. Both in the bow and stern there's a pair of small stairways leading from BD2 to AD1.
Utropica Island
The island roughly has the shape of a triangle, one point north, the other two in the south-east/west. The bay is at the south side of the island, between the aforementioned two points.
The beach is somewhat yellowish brown (from the volcanic ash and waste). Further inland, this changes into a more soily ground, which is most likely highly fertile (though part of the fertile top layer has been washed away by the occasional rainstorm in the past twenty years).
Gradually, the terrain becomes more rocky and mountainous (though there are no real mountains besides the volcano, the terrain only gets steeper). At the north point is the volcano (a small shield volcano, which normally don't have such explosive eruptions, so the last eruption was highly unusual). Obviously, the north side of the island is the highest point of the island and the south side the lowest.
Roughly in the center of the island is the largest and deepest lake and the only one that hasn't dried up completely. The bit of water left here is highly toxic however, so undrinkable for most Pokémon. It probably was fed by a spring once, but there's no longer any water coming from it, so it has either been blocked or has dried up.
A river leads in south-eastern direction to the beach. A long the way, there's one smaller lake, but it has dried up completely, so it's pretty much a big hole. From here on, the river leads southwards to the beach.
There's currently really nothing more to the island. To get from the south point of the island to the north point by foot, it takes approximately two and a half day.
Lastly, in preparation of the arrival of the S.S. Paradise, there's been made a simple wooden pier so the ship can anchor more easily. It's just more convenient. This is the only trace there's been human presence at the island in the past month (and it went no further then the beach).
Sign-up Form
Name: Does it need explanation?
Age: Same as the above. One note though, characters should be at least 18. Because it wouldn't make much sense if they just hired a bunch of teenagers, would it?
Gender: Again, this shouldn't be too difficult
Profession: Why is your character part of the team? What is their role? I briefly mentioned it in the intro, the wide range of professionals. Some examples: a ranger, a breeder, a normal trainer, a botanist, a hydrographer or anything else for that matter. As long as it would fit the plot (if you're not sure, add a reason why your characters profession would fit). Also, keep in mind we only need one of most professions, in some cases two (we could have two rangers/breeders for example, but we only need one botanist).
Appearance: You don't have to be too in-depth, though make sure you give a proper description (so tell me more then just their hair/eye colour and what kind of clothes they wear) One or two paragraphs should be enough, though more is alright too.
First impression: So, from here on, it's going to be a little different. You see, I like to actually discover things about other characters in a roleplay, but if you tell me everything about your characters personality and history, there's not much to find out anymore. So instead, I want you to write down what someone's first impression of your character would be. So, how would someone see your character if they hadn't known him/her for more then a few days? Two or three paragraphs should be enough.
Introduction: I figured that after the first meeting organised by the professor there would have been some sort of introduction thing. You've probably had them yourself before. And as the plot will start after their arrival on Utropica Island, I thought everyone could include this in their sign-up. One paragraph is more then enough. Just put in things you think your character would say to/share with the team during their introduction.
Party Pokémon: Nickname(if there is one), species name(or an image), gender, ability, nature and move set of the Pokémon. Additional information is optional.

I've rambled way too much by now XD Didn't scare you off, nor bored you to death yet? Great!
So, the plot will start in a weeks time at most (slightly depends on how fast the sign-ups go, if there are enough within two days, it will start earlier).
EDIT:So, everything got a little later then I'd expected. Starting this up in a few days, as soon as possible. Sign-ups are currently still open, as we have room for one or two more characters. Thank you for your patience guys!
Hmm, am I forgetting something? Oh yeah, my own sign-up. It's probably a decent example when filling out your own as well. At least, I hope so XD
EDIT: I added another character and bumped up Skyler's age a little.
My sign-ups
Name: Skyler Angelo
Age: 23
Gender: Male
Profession: Ranger - Was one of the first to be requested to partake in the operation. As a ranger, it is his duty supervise the project and lead the general investigation of the island.
Appearance
Skyler stands roughly 6'2" with decent posture. He has a slender and lean build; his work as a ranger keeps him in shape, but he doesn't have a work-out routine. If he didn't do his ranger job, he would be fairly skinny.
He has a fair, healthy-looking skin, although his ear-length, raven black hair makes him look comparatively pale. His face is somewhat pointed, with amber eyes and a perpetual scowl. He has a straight nose, a thin mouth and a small black goatee. A thin scar runs from his left cheekbone to his jawline.
When on duty, he's clad in an alternate version of the Sinnoh Ranger Branch uniform. He wears black jeans, a black shirt, a dark green, short sleeved jacket, dark green boots and he ditched the stupid hat. In his spare time he prefers to wear casual, comfortable clothing in dark colours.
First impression
When it comes to first impressions, Skyler doesn't make a very good one. He'll purposely keep his distance from you, answers rather curtly and most likely throws in a harsh remark or two, apparently not caring if he hurts someone's feelings with it. Most people tend to leave him alone after a while.
A possibly more positive trait that becomes apparent quite quickly is Skyler's survival mindset. If something needs to be done, he's probably the first to do it and do it well. You don't get by in life if you just laze around or squabble endlessly about it.
Introduction
"My name is Skyler Angelo. I'm twenty-three years old, come from Veilstone City and have been a Pokémon Ranger in the Sinnoh branch for about four years now."
"As you might have figured out by now, I'm here to supervise the project, which means you either get your instructions from professor Tilia or from me. If you don't like that idea, your problem, just don't complain to me."
Party Pokémon
Faunus, male
Serene Grace, Naive nature
Mirror Move/Metronome/AncientPower/Aerial Ace
As Skyler's first Pokémon, they share a rather close bond. The two met in a somewhat unusual way, Skyler found his egg behind a dumpster and it eventually hatched. Faunus could be considered his partner Pokémon, though he's caught in a Pokéball (just like all Skyler's other Pokémon, as is custom for rangers from the Sinnoh region).
Damon, male
Lightningrod, Lonely nature
Stone Edge/Dig/Surf/Strength
Damon was caught as a Rhydon during Skyler's ranger training in the Battle Zone (all new Sinnoh rangers get this training). He is the powerhouse of the team and can serve as a form of transport as well, making him quite versatile. He's probably the most reliable Pokémon on the team.
Rangi, male
Dry Skin, Impish nature
Sucker Punch/Poison Jab/Focus Blast/Bulk Up
Skyler caught this troublemaker when he was assigned to patrol the area around Pastoria City. There were reports about a Croagunk scaring and pestering travellers, so Skyler investigated the matter. Turned out the Croagunk was mainly acting the way he was out of boredom, so Skyler offered him a place on his team.
Morgana, female
Levitate, Sassy nature
Shadow Ball/Pain Split/Rain Dance/Heal Bell
The fourth, final and only female member of the team. Skyler captured her as a Misdreavus in Eterna Forest, there's not really anything interesting about it. Her role is to support her team members with her moves, though she's capable of holding her own in a battle as well.
===
Name: Fae Garner
Age: 19
Gender: Female
Profession: Breeder - She's the granddaughter and apprentice of Kalea Garner, a renowned Pokémon breeder
Appearance
Fae is rather petite with a height of 5'3", a slender build and lean muscle developed from swimming. She has waist-length black hair, which she recently dip-dyed light blue and an olive skin. Her face is round, with dark almond shaped eyes, a small nose and full lips.
She mostly wears dresses, all of them in light, bright colours and with floral patterns, which makes her look somewhat exotic. When the weather happens to be cold for once, she tends to layer, as nearly her whole wardrobe is build for summer weather.
First impression
Fae has a bubbly, upbeat personality, which becomes apparent as soon as you meet her. She's full of energy, a little naive and rather blunt, which surprises people at times.
She's also rather dreamy, if not to say absent minded and chances are she might not have heard whatever you were telling her, though she doesn't do it on purpose. It just happens.
Introduction
"..."
"Oh! It is my turn? Sorry!"
"Well, my name is Fae. Fae Garner. I'm nineteen and I've lived nearly my whole life on the Sevii Islands. I really love living there, the weather's always beautiful and sunny and it's perfect for swimming."
"Euhm, I probably should tell you why I'm here as well. So, my grandmother is Kalea Garner and she's a Pokémon breeder. And they actually asked her to join this team, but she said 'I'm too old for this kind of thing. I'll send my granddaughter instead, I assure you she's a suitable replacement.' And that's why I'm here."
Party Pokémon
Spirit, male
Levitate, Brave nature
Earthquake/Dragon Claw/Fire Blast/Protect
Received as a gift from her father at the age ten, Fae and Spirit have spend quite a lot of time together. The Flygon is rather protective of its trainer (sometimes overly so), though that's probably a good thing as well, considering Fae's dreaminess, which more then often get her in hazardous situations.
Maya, female
Leaf Guard, Calm nature
Magical Leaf/Aromatherapy/Frenzy Plant/Heal Pulse
When Fae became an apprentice of her grandmother at age eleven, Maya's egg was the first egg she got to take care off. The two bonded immediately and Fae was allowed to keep the Pokémon. Ever since, Maya has been helping out Fae with her duties and simultaneously keeps an eye on her.
Wiki, female
Chlorophyll, Mild nature
Synthesis/Cotton Guard/Energy Ball/Flash
This Hoppip was found as an egg not too long ago by Fae. The Jumpluff season had passed already and the flocks of newly born Hoppip were leaving. The egg still hadn't hatched and Fae feared it would not hatch in time to travel with its friends and decided to take care of the egg. Her prediction came true, as the egg hatched several weeks later and all Hoppip had left by then. She named the Hoppip after the berry it seemed to be the most fond off.
