The City of Trees
I was running down the road
The cold, wet, rain slicked my hair against my head.
I was tired, water in my eyes
trying to go on.
Mud splashed against my face
trying to find a town for shelter
I don’t know why I went on.
The grass was taller than I,
too difficult to do more than walk through
the void sun was shielded by the blades.
The wood bridge creaked as I went across
a torrent of water below,
ripples from the falling rain
distorted my unseeable reflection.
Sweat trickled down my face,
mixed with rain from the relentless sky,
I was more tired than ever.
Running up the steep hill,
my knees nearly gave away
but they didn’t,
only for the ray of sunlight ahead.
I ran through the wind
like I had never run before,
needing the town to rest.
As I entered the limits of the city,
the people were so free and caring,
welcoming me,
a weary trav’ler,
with open arms.
The people dwelled in trees
with soft leaves and gentle bark.
They were one with nature and the creatures
of which I devoted my new life to.
I looked up into the shining sky
to see a rainbow.
My spirit felt free,
and it was the magic of Fortree.
The trees held the secrets of nature,
where I discovered my hidden power.
They spread beauty upon the land.
The people treated me as their own,
I’d never met anyone quite like them,
they held the magic of the trees.
I continued my exploration
in the unorthodox paradise,
where I met a girl.
She was unlike any other,
her beauty overcoming land,
her eloquence smoother than my slick hair on that rainy day,
and her prowess nearly blew me away with the wind.
But most of all
she was a friend.
They called her Winona
Queen of the Sky,
my best friend since forever.
We conquered the shadows of the night,
and rode the winds together by day.
She taught me her skills,
and I mine.
When I had been as happy as then
I could not remember.
My paradise was heaven,
the trees and my creatures and my friend,
nothing was better.
But it could get worse.
I had to leave that town,
it saddened my heart and pained my mind,
but I knew one day
destiny would return me to Fortree.
My free soaring spirit had found her home.
I left a piece of myself there
at the city’s edge:
a seed from my heart
I sowed in the soil,
the soil that began the magic.
And I cried,
a single crystal tear,
with my love for the place where I longed to be.
I turned around without saying goodbye,
walked on the road ahead,
something special caught my eye.
A million colours
was a rainbow in the sky.
I was running down the road
The cold, wet, rain slicked my hair against my head.
I was tired, water in my eyes
