Jade and Mileena stood among the crowd that had gathered for the Reaping ceremony in District 12. Two people among them, a boy and a girl, would be selected to attend this year's Hunger Games. Jade tightly held her sister's hand. She hoped she wouldn't be one of those two...

Sally Trinket, the escort and ambassador from the Capitol, was, as ever, hosting this year's ceremony. The Reaping itself was about to begin, as the obligatory pro-Capitol, pro-Hunger Games propaganda film began to draw to a close.
Trinket gave a silly laugh typical of someone from the Capitol. "Oh, I just love that film. But enough of that. This is where the real fun begins!" She did not mean this sadistically; she genuinely considered it 'fun for all the family'. The two pots that contained the names of the potential Tributes- one pot of females, one of males- from this District were brought onto the stage. "Now, then...As ever, ladies first!" She put a hand into the pot containing the female Tribute entries, deliberating over which envelope to choose.

“Sis... You're shaking,” Mileena told her sister.
“I am?” Jade looked down at her hands, which were trembling with anxiousness.

Trinket finally chose an envelope, and lifted it with painstaking slowness. She broke its seal, opened it, and removed the slip of paper with the Tribute's name on. She inhaled to read out the name when Russell Abernathy, District 12's only former winner of the Games, staggered forward from his seat on the stage, as drunk as was typical of him. He vomited over the side of the stage, then fell off, too. District 12 was far from amused. Sally Trinket was appalled. But it was almost certain that the viewers in the Capitol would be laughing their overdressed heads off at this spectacle.
"Ahem..." Trinket's disgust was evident in her voice. "As I was about to say...District 12's first tribute for this year's Hunger Games is...Mileena Stewart!"
As was expectable: no applause.

Already, guards from the Capitol were asking for Mileena's whereabouts, and were being directed this way. There was only one way to stop someone from entering short of killing them on the spot, and doubtless, Jade knew that. However, nobody had done that in District 12 for a long, long time...
Meanwhile, at the stage, Russell was attempting to climb back up, but fell again.

“Wait!” she called out. “I offer myself as tribute!” The words were out before she realized what she had just said.

"Jade Stewart? Hm. Then I'd bet my best hat that Mileena is your sister, right?" She gave a silly Capitol giggle. "Jade Stewart, everybody- the volunteer from District 12!"
She expected applause. None came. However, the crowd did perform the District's mark of deep respect: touching three fingers to their lips, then saluting with them.
Trinket gave a nervous laugh at this. "Oh-okay, then...Moving on...The boys, now!" She reached into the other pot of envelopes.

Trinket opened this envelope without interruption.
"Leonel Griffin!" she announced. Still no applause. Russell made a third attempt at climbing onto the stage, and failed again. And to think he would be the Tributes' mentor..!

"And there we have them!" Trinket announced finally. "Our District 12 Tributes, everyone!"
The Capitol anthem began to play as the screens around the area began to show the complete list of Tributes, with images of them from their respective Reapings. By the looks of things, some Districts had chosen two male Tributes, instead of a male and a female- Districts 2, 3, 5, 6 and 7, to be precise.

As the footage of each Reaping played, it seemed to become apparent; District 2's Tributes- Careers, given their build- had volunteered simultaneously, and had started fighting to be District 2's Tribute. The fight was broken up when both were chosen. District 3 had chosen a young male Tribute, and someone who was clearly an older brother had more or less demanded to be a Tribute alongside him. In District 5, it seemed that one male Tribute had been drawn from the female pot, following some kind of executive mix-up. The same seemed to be true in District 7. In District 6, both names had been drawn from the same pot; the female pot had not been touched at all.
