The Element Emeralds Teenage Life: Stand Proud

CHAPTER 1 - Arrow to Your Heart

In the forest that was behind the backyard of the Griffins, Leonel 'Wes' Griffin and Sally Acorn were taking a stroll together. It had been five weeks since the beginning of the school year-- and five weeks since the two had realized their love for each other. And frankly, Wes couldn't be happier.

Although Sally herself wouldn't have put it in quite the same terms, had she been thinking about that exact-same thing- which she wasn't, currently- she would find that she felt more or less the same way; a sign, perhaps, of their compatibility as a couple.

"It's been at least eight years," he nodded.
Sure enough, sitting in a tree up ahead, there was a treehouse, with a ladder leading up to it. Curiously enough, there was a strange arrow stuck in a low-hanging branch, almost as if the arrow had fallen into it.

Perhaps against her better judgement, Sally paid it no mind. As far as she knew, it could, quite easily, have been there for as long as the treehouse itself, if not longer. As a result, it elicited no reaction from her.

Wes, however, was intrigued by the arrow. Pulling it out of the branch, he wondered, "I didn't have a bow, so what's this arrow doing here?"

"Looks kinda old, too... oh well." Slipping it into his jacket, he climbed up the ladder, holding his hand out to Sally.
"C'mon, who needs to be worried about some stupid arrow?"
***
The next day, as Wes prepared for school, he saw that same arrow seemingly follow him, first lying on the bathroom counter, then leaning against his chair while he was eating breakfast, then lying next to him on the sidewalk as he and Mileena waited for the bus. Sitting down, he tried to put it out of his mind; after all, Sally would be boarding soon.

Presently, as promised, the bus would stop at Sally's stop, allowing her to board. As usual, she took her seat next to him.
"Good morning," she said with a smile, which faded ever so slightly. "Something on your mind?"

"Oh, uh, well--"
"Hey big bro," Mileena interrupted him, what's that sticking out of your backpack?"
Wes looked at his backpack, and pulled out the thing sticking out of it-- it was the arrow.
"...OK, what the fuck? This thing has been following me all morning!"

Sally winced ever so slightly at the harshness of his choice of words, even if it had been little more than a colloquialism.
"Strange. But how could it follow you? It's only an arrow."

"So, it's not that much of an issue, then...apart from the fact that, rightly or wrongly, you think it might be stalking you."

The bus drew to a stop, allowing them to get off. It would seem Shadow-- adequately awake, for once-- was preparing to accost Wes, yet again, presumably just to shove him aside or otherwise generally and unnecessarily throw his weight around, as he so often would.

As Wes stepped off the bus, he tried to ignore Shadow, thinking that nothing he could do could unnerve him as much as that damn arrow.

As expected, he gave him the obligatory push, when something caught his eye. Swiftly, he took the arrow, which was sticking out of Wes' backpack.
"Tch. Don't tell me you're getting creeped out by this stupid old thing. You're so pathetic."
