Thank you for understanding. :-)

15-year-old Leonel 'Wes' Griffin was playing Super Mario World on his SNES. Today was the day he'd receive a Pokémon from Professor Oak, and begin his journey to become the Champion of the Pokémon League. For now, however, he was just passing the time.
His mother, Amber, eventually rose up the stairs and into his room. “Leonel,” she said, “it's time to go. You don't want to keep Professor Oak waiting, do you?”
“Nope! Definitely not!” Grabbing his baseball cap and backpack, he rushed down the stairs past his mother, heading out the door and into the quiet and peaceful place called Pallet Town.

Someone else, despite the relative quietness of the town, was already outside: Lucas, who was in a very similar position to Wes at this stage, in terms of a career as a Trainer.

"Of course," he said with a grin. "...Or, at least, I would be if the professor was actually around. Which he isn't."

Lucas followed him after due hesitation. Just as they were about to enter the grass, Professor Oak himself appeared, guiding them away from the grass and warning them of the dangers of straying into it without a Pokémon for protection, and so on, and so on- basically, an indirect applied lecture on the basics of personal safety that they already knew.

This caught the professor's attention, and engaged it (deeming it to be an it in the name of speed), intending to catch it. He waited partly to see if this was viable- which it seemed to be- and whether he had the boys' attention.

“Wha!” the Pikachu gasped, the professor's sudden movement surprising her.
This also got Wes' attention, as he didn't know Pokémon could speak English.

To Oak, it seemed little more than an average Pikachu cry; after all, he was more interested in capturing it than listening to it talk, at this stage. Forthwith he threw a PokéBall at it, with the confidence that it would catch it first time.

Turning the Pikachu into a red light, the Poké Ball pulled said light into its center, and closed. Falling to the ground, it shook once... twice... three times... then clicked shut.

Lucas gave a slight nod of approval as the professor collected the ball, then resumed leading them to his laboratory where, he assured them, their starter-Pokémon awaited.

Satisfied that all were present and accounted for, the professor laid out the options as far as starters were concerned. He offered first pick to Wes; however, before any opportunity for him to stake a claim materialised, Shadow shoved him aside and demanded the Eevee that was on offer. Without resistance, Oak obliged him.
