(Note: I am not too sure if this is the best way to make this challenge into an Art Game, if anyone has any idea of how to improve it, please tell me!)

Based on that trend that was popular some years? ago. You ask for the defining traits of your art style and draw without them or with an inversion of them! This challenge is a bit different from the other threads we have in the Art Games, as we don't have to give out a prompt for the next artist. This is the way this will work:
  • Person A takes on the challenge by explicitly posting it here.
    • They will be added to the list at the end of this post in order to make it easier to know who's participating.
  • Persons B and C describe their art style.
  • Person A eventually posts a drawing done with their 'evil' art style, following B and C's comments and/or traits they themself have noted. They can continue participating or check themself off the list.
✦ Guidelines ✦
  1. Only draw subjects within forum rules, as always.
  2. Do not give uncalled criticism of someone else's art/art style. This is not a critique thread, we already have threads made for that purpose.
  3. If an artist is not explicitly participating in the challenge, do not tag or quote them. Only provide commentary to artists that are active challengers.
  4. Provide examples of your art! Either by linking to your art thread or posting them as images; people can't give you traits if they don't know how your art looks like.
✦ Current challengers! ✦

Oh this is so much fun!! Feel free to add me to the list of challengers c: (My art thread is also in my signature!!)
There's a link to my art thread in my signature (๑˘︶˘๑)
Hope I'm doing this right: your style is super angular and thick lined!! Really fun colors and and cool halftone/cel style shading!! It reminds me of TWEWY and the art style of Level 5 games~

Feel free to add me to the list of challengers c:
I'll return the favor and give you some traits as well!! Your lines are thin and uniform, and the pen you often use to line has a pencil-like texture to it. You tend to colour the lineart as part of the rendering of the drawing. And talking about rendering, you use very saturated colours for both light and shadow, it gives your art an iridescent look :chansey:
In terms of proportions, your style follows pretty realistic proportions but you stylize faces in a anime-ish way. Specially eyes, you draw them round and full of light! In combination with your lines, it gives your characters a very soft look.

Haha what gave you that hint (walks away with their suspiciously level 5-shaped pockets)
And thanks for your comments! I'd like to have some more material to work with before attempting the challenge but it's a good starting point :ayeaye:

This is such a cool idea for a challenge that it's kind of a shame there's only two people in the thread since August! Lemme come on board; you can get a gallery of my art in the "art" link in my forum sig.

You have an overall anime-like style, which is most apparent through the lineart, especially with big eyes and round heads, and the shading, which is cel shaded, but with some soft blending on the edges. I see you favor heavily textured, pencil and crayon-like brushes. Your more rendered out works have colored outlines, which respond to environmental lighting and shadow. I also notice some film-grain like overlay added for texture on many of your works.

I particularly like these works of yours, which I think are also pretty emblematic of your style:

Hey I remember your stuff from Art Fight! I really enjoyed the piece you did of Camille!

You go for a quite a cartoony style, with abstracted shapes leading to angular lineart with overall bold strokes but varying line weight throughout. The colors are also bold and high contrast, favoring flat coloring. When there is shading, it is cel shaded, without any blending. I also see on many of your pieces that you like to use a circular screentone texture.

I enjoyed these pieces, which I think illustrate these aspects of your art well:

Not sure if I do this right, I'm no art expert, but:

Your lineart is very striking and eye catching, and your shading style and coloring is full of sharp contrasts.

You tend to have like, slightly sketchy lineart, especially when drawing hair. Your highlights tend to be very bright, while your shadows feel softer both color and shape wise. There's also often some small patches of hatching shading

You have very painterly colors, with very thick lineart, but colored so it blends in with what's around it.

(I'm going to start listing bullet points because I don't have the brain power for prose rn (╥ω╥ ))

Glad to see you're still active here! I will cherish your attack on my dear Francisca forever ☆ ~('▽^人)

As of your art style:
  • You use coloured lines more often than purely black.
  • Talking about lineart, you tend to use it for shadowing either by having pure lines as shadow or by crosshatching in a comic-esque style.
  • The bodies you draw follow realistic proportions but your faces lean more towards an anime stylized look.
  • You don't cut corners with details: specially with clothing and even natural body folds.

  • I second what Dawning has said but adding that not only the colour makes your lines blend in, you're also not afraid of painting your lighting/shadows on top of them.
  • In general your art feels like it's being painted, the brushes you use are textured like actual painting brushes.

I've wanted to do something like this for awhile! Art thread in the signature
  • Your lines are very thin and sketched like you would with a pencil.
  • Colours!! You use saturated colours and aren't afraid of extreme hue shifting while rendering.
  • Your rendering is also painted with soft edges.
I'll try to post my attempt at the challenge next time I post on this thread!

I was really surprised by how much this came out looking like... something I drew? I really though that my colouring was the most distinctive part of my art, and the addition of actually thinking about lineart seemed like it'd tip the scales, but... apparently not? The shapes and proportions established absolutely keep it from feeling too far outside of normal Dawning range. (The fact that I used the OC I've drawn probably the most probably played a role in this, but look. I haven't drawn her recently and it makes me sad if I go too long without drawing her)

I capped the maximum saturation for colours at 25% and strictly enforced no hue-shifting (as much as it hurt...).

Keep me marked as still in the challenge, I wanna push myself to make something that feels actually antithetical to my usual work.

(breaking my promise from last post because I still haven't got around drawing my attempt haha)

Will do! And as to comment on your submission for the challenge: next time you could change the proportions to be more chibi, it would be a very drastic change compared to the realistic body proportions you tend to draw :hmm:
I think you did pretty good! It does still come of as a Dawning drawing but the change in lineart and shading does make a huge difference.

Yea, but it definitely feels "Evil" to me, looks quite different than usual, the thing that stands out the most to me as different is the line thickness

Is mine "Evil" enough?
I struggled tbh, I made another 1st attempt, but hated it.
This is the second one, that I hate less, in two versions:
1758110787001.png

1758110855896.png

What I did:
Instead of starting with color, i started with the lines, so instead of "painted", this is "drawn"
ink brush for lines, with a fixed size, not sure if it counts as thin but definitely thinner than some lines i used in other stuff.
Lines are pure black, unshaded.
Flat untextured coloring with basic oval brush for shadows
colors? the "pastel version" is more "evil" i guess, not sure though.
Overall, a succesful experiment, as in, every experiment that leads to learning is a success, but i don't really like too much how it turned out.
But yeah, this was a challenge indeed, quite an interesting experience.
anyway,
I think I am done for now, you can cross me out after this round.

PS [Edit: technically speaking, this is even a 3rd attempt. this was hard]

You did really good as well!! It's also a very drastic difference, the thin black lines actually fit your style pretty well imo. It's good to experiment with your usual drawing process, even if you dislike it in the end. I'll cross you out, by the way. Thank you so much for participating!! :bulbaLove:

And as promised, I finally did mine:

Notes: the bullet points written in a lighter colour are things I thought of myself. I know 'multicolour/monocolour lines' doesn't make much sense because I'm prone to both but I was trying to say that I usually colour over my lines to add detail.

I don't know what to comment on mine. The lineart was fun, I'm glad I chose that brush. I'm not too proud of the colouring, though. I also used layer modes for the shadows and the lighting, since I don't tend to use them. Overall, it was fun! I think I'll stay as a challenger for a little while :P

Hallloo!! I'd love to join, uhmm I don't have many drawings (one lol...) I'll post one of my super serious ones on after i send this message :ayeaye: also my art's in my signature!!

I had an interesting time reconciling everyone's comments, and in the end I decided to draw in multiple "evil" styles that mix-and-match things that address key points.

For reference, here is Camille, the subject of the rest of the drawings, in my regular style. I was noted for having colored, slightly sketchlike lineart; hatched shading; and detailed, realistic body proportions with anime-style faces. I also got comments about having bright highlights, and somehow simultaneously soft shading and high-contrast shading.

In the following, I did pixel art with a limited resolution in order to reduce the amount of possible detail. Surprisingly, you can still end up squeezing a lot of detail into a few pixels, which is why I ended up deciding to draw additional "evil" versions later. Since I got a lot of comments about lineart, I wanted to reduce the impact of the lineart as possible, especially in the hair.

2025-09-22-camille-chibi-pixel-art.png

For the next two styles, I kept using the pixel brushes. In the top drawing, I did lineart more or less how I would do it normally, but doing it completely in black. Rather than hatching, I go for solid color or pixel dithering. I tried going for a more realistic face, but because I'm simultaneously avoiding hatching and avoiding shading that's too soft, I wasn't really able to execute that― normally I would either render realistically with soft colors, or I'd add quite a lot of hatching to get across realistic contours.

In the bottom one, I lean into a completely stylized style, which is loosely inspired by @escolopendror's lineart. This set a completely different tone from the top one, and I found that quite interesting to compare. The shading here is mostly pretty hard, since it's conveyed primarily in the lineart.

Glad to see you're still active here!
Haha, I do tend to disappear for weeks at a time don't I? I think I usually return when I have new art; I haven't been keeping up with the Pokémon games or anime, and the manga doesn't really get discussed to often, even though I love Pokéspe :p

I'm interested! I'd like to join. My Art Thread is in my signature (like everyone else XD), it's all pixel art soooo... yeah.

it's very pokemon-sprite esque!! very cute, darker lines on the outside and coloured lines on the inside!!
Solid colours, very cute and very dynamic poses!! very vibrant as well, its so reminiscent of the older games i absolyutely LOVE IT!!!! I really love how you balance colour as well!!

Here to say that I've added to the list every person that requested so, it's just that I didn't have the time or energy to post here until now (╥﹏╥)

I'll try my best to give some key points, since there are just 3 pieces on your art thread ( ̄▽ ̄ )ゞ
  • Your lines are very uniform, without weight.
  • You also colour them with a single flat colour.
  • Your rendering mixes neon colours with a very dramatic lighting, with most of the character being surrounded by shadow.
  • Your proportions are very chibi-like, the eyes in particular are very simple with just a line to dictate where the upper eyelid is.

I had an interesting time reconciling everyone's comments, and in the end I decided to draw in multiple "evil" styles that mix-and-match things that address key points.
The thing with this sort of challenge is that it's normal to have non-consistent key points for your artstyle, that's why I try to give the most consistent/most common characteristics that I can see :P Your take is a really good way to approach this paradoxical problem.
I love your pixel Camille! Your character design works really well for that sort of Y2K, doll-ish pixel art. You should really consider this style for page dolls or something, it's very eye catching :bulbaCute:

In the bottom one, I lean into a completely stylized style, which is loosely inspired by @escolopendror's lineart.
I'm so honoured?! (*/▽\*) It's pretty interesting how in all three attempts you divided the hair into these big chunks from the root, compared to the more anime-ish silhouetted hair from the 'not evil' example. I'd say your last attempt really succeeds into toning down the amount of detail your pieces usually have. You should definitely try this sort of high-res pixel art again :bulbaLove:

I'm interested! I'd like to join. My Art Thread is in my signature (like everyone else XD), it's all pixel art soooo... yeah.
Well, since you only draw pixel art, it's the most characteristic aspect of your style. Other than that:
  • You wear your Gen IV/V inspiration on your sleeve.
  • Your colours are saturated and more cartoon-ish than anime-ish in nature, in contrast with the above point.
And I wish I could say more technical stuff about pixel art, but I'm still learning about that field ☆⌒(> _ <)

I'll try my best to give some key points, since there are just 3 pieces on your art thread ( ̄▽ ̄ )ゞ
ahaha yeah... well if it consoles you, they're all my most recent pieces lol!!! i think you got it down tho, i'll post some of my proudest artfights maybe
