the great gts filter debate

I've been looking at a lot of the threads that bemoan the number of impossible/ridiculous trades out on the gts, and in every one, there's at least one suggestion for a filter on the gts to filter out unreasonable trades. There are, however some problems with the filter. What would constitute an unreasonable trade? How would the filter decide what is and what is not an unreasonable trade? Take a hypothetical situation. A bidoof up for a level 100 mewtwo. What if the taker was an avid bidoof collector?(just throwing out ideas) What if the bidoof was level 99? What if it was shiny? Should shiny pokemon be let through the filter? This thread is for debating the ups and downs of the filter. "Should there, or should there not be one? What would the requirements be? Would pokemon holding rare items be let through? If so, what would constitute a rare item?" Ad so on and so forth. Feel free to pose and/or answer your own questions. The ones above are merely starting points. Thanks, and I look forward to reading your posts!

I think the filter should be at least programmed to filter out legends at levels they can't be at. Here's a list of legends and their lowest levels.

Articuno: Lv.50
Zapdos: Lv.50
Moltres: Lv.50
Mewtwo: Lv.70
Mew: Lv.10 from an event in 2006, Lv.30 otherwise
Raikou: Lv.40
Entei: Lv.40
Suicune: Lv.40
Lugia: Lv.45
Ho-Oh: Lv.45
Celebi: Lv.50 (?)
Regirock: Lv.30
Regice: Lv.30
Registeel: Lv.30
Latias: Lv.35
Latios: Lv.35
Kyogre: Lv.45
Groudon: Lv.45
Rayquaza: Lv.50
Jirachi: Lv.5
Deoxys: Lv.30
Uxie: Lv.50
Mesprit: Lv.50
Azelf: Lv.50
Dialga: Lv.1
Palkia: Lv.1
Heatran: Lv.50
Regigigas: Lv.1
Giratina: Lv.1
Cresselia: Lv.50
Manaphy: Lv.1
Darkrai: Lv.50 (DP Newmoon Island Darkrai are illegal, as the Member Card was only distributed to Platinum.)
Shaymin: Lv.30
Arceus: Lv.100 (Hall of Origin Arceus are illegal, as the Azure Flute was never distributed.)
Victini: Lv.15
Cobalion: Lv.42
Terrakion: Lv.42
Virizion: Lv.42
Tornadus: Lv.40
Thundurus: Lv.40
Reshiram: Lv.50
Zekrom: Lv.50
Landorus: Lv.70
Kyurem: Lv.75
Keldeo, Meloetta, and Genesect are all illegal, anyway.

I am sure Game Freak would be able to easily compile a list of all Pokemon at their legally attainable levels. Why they can't use that as a filter, I'll never understand.

But apparently Marshtomp can be filtered because of three letters.

Honestly, I don't think a filter is necessary. Sure, people may ask for a Zekrom level 9 and under, but even with the filter, people will still ask for ridiculous things like a victini for a ratatta.

We know the Victini-for-Rattata thing will still exist, and there's no reasonable way to stop that. The underleveled-legends thing, however, can be stopped, and it's chiefly that which clutters the GTS.

For trades like that, I always have useless-natured 0-IV legendaries waiting. D<

But I would LOVE a level filter. D8; It is VERY IRRITATING to see EVERY SINGLE TRADE demanding level-9-and-under Zek/Resh. OTL

I would be all for a filter if they could handle it properly. Filter out anything that is currently impossible. On top of the legends there are requests for under leveled evolutions and right now you can ask for dittos that are lower than they can be (which I believe would be ten, correct me if I'm wrong).

If it was doable they could make a filter that they alter as things become possible. If they do an event like the one they did in HGSS for the dragons from Black and White then they could allow requests for those being level 9 and under. If they have new under leveled evolutions (for example, my level 8 venomoth from Soul Silver) then they can alter the filter for those.

I don't care if people ask for a victini for a rattata, I really don't - as long as it is a victini that is possible to give anyway. At the very least someone might hack one to give to them because apparently less obvious hacks go through just fine. However I have talked to people who have tried to PokeSav a level 1 reshiram or zekrom and had them rejected. If you can't offer it in anyway, why can you ask for it?

I don't get these people who are apparently trying to show off whatever they have, especially since it's so often something stupid and not even always a shiny. Why clog up the system and make it harder for others to find things? I know I can just put things up and ask for what I want, that's what I do most of the time now. However no one should be forced to do it that way for pretty much every pokemon they ask for.

Yet those comprise of such a small percentage compared to a shiny Pokemon asking for a Reshiram below level 9. They won't risk asking for a level 100 Reshiram because people can get that.

Actually, you can get a legit level 5 Mew, and the GAMESTP/WIN2011 beasts were all at level 30. Also, the Ageto Celebi and Mitsurin Celebi were both level 10. There might be some more exceptions to your list, but I can't find them right now.

There should be another option that lists you the players by the Pokemon they ask for,not the ones they placed eg. search for everyone who wants a Magmortar and then you look what they have offered in return.

You guys bring up some good points. Maybe a filter might not be so bad. I still think it is a little unnecessary though.

I don't think you can offer the Shiny Beasts. At least it didn't let me on GTS negotiations.

Anything you've listed there holding the Classic or Premier Ribbons would not be allowed to be placed on the GTS, thus should not be allowed through the filter as it would be illegal.

I would actually make tiers for pokes.
For example nobody can ask for victini by offering ratata.
If you want vicitini, you must be able to offer a legendary or a pseudo-legendary.

That's quite a good idea, but remember that sometimes these trades are made by the same player who wants to transfer his/her Pokemon to another version and doesn't have two DS systems. I believe lots of people (including myself) will be doing that once Gray or whatever they'll name it comes out.

I would love it if there were a few "versions" of the GTS: one that allowed everything, one that bans legendaries, and one that bans legendaries and pokes over lvl 50.

I don't know, I think it would be much more easier for me at least :p

I am not saying a filter is a bad idea, but it is not really necessary.

I would already be happy if a search showed more than seven results. In my experience, about 20 % of offers is reasonable, so if you got, say, a list of 100 results, there would always be something reasonable in there. You could then just read over the Zekrom requests.

(Think about it: would sites like eBay be workable if they gave only seven results at a time?)

But there's the risk of someone else seeing your poke and grabbing it.

I think it'd be nice if the GTS filtered out hacks better than it currently does. I also wouldn't mind seeing a "no legendaries" option to better categorize trades.

If you know how the do it,the only Pokemon you can loose is the crappy one from the new version.

Basically all you need to do is catch a Pokemon nobody offers eg. Phanphy in the new game, train it more than ten levels(to avoid those who catch and offer) and ask for the good Pokemon from the old version. Then boot old version and search for your Phanphy and trade. And last you connect with the new version and pick up your old Poke.
