Thus we have finally learned about the plot of the latest movie out this July. As long time fans, we look back at years ago and remember the time when the first movie came out in the fall of 1999…
Heck that was when I got convinced over Pokemon and remained a pokefan since then. For me always, the First Pokemon movie will be the greatest Pokemon movie ever made. This type of thinking was reinforced by the massive success of that movie compared to all the others and the fact that I am biased as a “Generation I’er” to all the remaining movies.
Here is rant on what I think of all the Pokemon Movies after the very first one.
Here is another rant on why The First Movie was so good:
However, now in 2009, I think my Generation I’ness will finally be surpassed. The new World’d Strongest Pokemon will appear this summer and I think that it will be the Greatest Pokemon Movie ever made. Here’s a rundown of why I think this will be true.
Reasons
1) The world’s strongest Pokemon appears (M2: 1, A: 1)
2) Both of them have awesome backstrories (M2: 2, A: 2)
3) Both of them are seeking revenge (M2: 3,A: 3)
4) There is an awesome battle in the end (M2: 4, A: 4)
5) The fight involves many other powerful legendary Pokemon (M2: 4, A: 5)
Sheesh! We only get a Mew as Mewtwo’s opponent, in the Arceus Movie we get the entire dragon trio and a Heatran to boot!
6) Ash/ some other HUMAN nearly or really does die. (M2: 5, A: 5 +x) We still aren’t really sure if anything like that will happen in the Arceus movie…we probably only know on July 18th.
7) Part of a trilogy (M2 :6, A: 6 +x). The Sinnoh movies are all part of a trilogy and the Arceus one is the MEGA FINALE of the three. However Mewtwo’s movie is part of a Tri-series that includes his prequel “The birth of Mewtwo” and the sequel “Mewtwo Returns” – classic stuff!
8) There are giant explosions. (M2: 6, A 7+x) Yeah, we’ve all seen the trailer and the massive nuclear blast the the Dragon trio unleash upon the unsuspecting Arceus (YeeHAA!). However, all Mewtwo gives us is the collision between his Barrier ball and that of Mew.
9) Computer Graphics Animation. (M2 :6, A: 8+x) Sadly, the 1st movie is a victim of its own age… despite the efforts of 4kids to add cool CGI effects to the stadium doors and storm clouds…The Arceus movie still beats the crud out of the first is this arena.
10) A brand new technique is introduced to the franchise (M2: 7, A: 9+x). Little do people remember that the 1st movie introduced the science of cloning to Pokemon. Yes it was an awesome feature of the first movie that culminated in the most memorable battles amongst the fully evolved starters of the trainers and their Super clones…
for the youngsters, the effect of that would be like having Cynthia of the Elite 4 send out her Garchomp only to have it OWNED big time by let’s say another ‘shiny’ Garchomp. Imagine the faces everyone will have if that happens right now! And that happened back in 1999! In short Mewtwo was a genius and powerhouse.
I’ll ignore the cheap try of the Lucario movie to introduce the concept of AURA because I say SCIENCE FICTION BEATS FANTASY STUFF ANY DAY! Aura is nothing compared to the fact that Pokemon trainers can now instead of just going to new locations in some region (etc.) can actually meet beings from and travel to MULTIVERSE DIMENSIONS and back! Alternate Dimensions in Pokemon! COOOL!!! And the Arceus movie will improve on that!
10) Fate of the world is at stake. (M2: 8, A: 9+x) Yeah, this might look like a cheap way to up Mewtwo’s points but when the world’s strongest Pokemon says it will take over the world and kill all the humans and has the ablilty to do anything with his mind and with cloning technology, then...
11) Both Mewtwo and Arceus gain in this category:
So I think we all should voice our opinions about which Pokemon movie was the greatest of them all.
Do read my rants, and give your opinions. But please don’t quote the massive amounts of text I’ve put up, you’ll really be wasting space. Just quote the few lines you are interested in.

Heck, The Lugia one wasn’t as good as the first but at least it gave us a massive battle of 4 legendaries, the Entei one was OK…but after it they all went downhill. I personally think that tha Celebi movie was the worst Pokemon movie ever made, the Lat@s one was better due to the Venetian setting and Massive Aerodactyl...
...and giant Kabutops...
but the Groudon in the 6th one didn’t shoot a single fire attack! Deoxys vs Rayquaza was a return to the awesomeness of the past but it ended awfully with the evil Deoxys going good and making Ash fly along side of it without any reason whatsoever and the final shot of Pikachu squealing in delight was an terrible ending. I don’t know why people were crazy about Lucario. Okay… he is probably the deepest character in all of Pokemon since Mewtwo but c’mon, that movie hardly had any action (though Regice blasting Ash was good) but overall the 8th movie was a real softy one (Ash arguing with Lucario, crying and later going suicidal and Lucario taking the fall instead).
The Manaphy one was All-About-May and her farewell and a ridiculously short Kyogre cameo (but Ash going Super Saiyan was a far better Generation ending moment than anything in the Lati@s movie)...

At the end of Generation III with 9 movies under our belts, I could safely and viciously argue with anyone that Mewtwo Strikes back was the the greatest Pokemon movie ever made…
…or so I thought…
It was February 2008 when a sledgehammer with the words “The Rise of Darkrai” inscribed on its iron head came smashing into my face. I spent a month recovering in a hospital bed after undergoing a 5 hour jaw replacement surgery. When I came to, the only thing I could think of was how FRICKIN AWESOME THAT MOVIE WAS!!!
Did you really that movie?
Damn!
Dialga OWNED Palkia! He owned him in the NEXT dimension, on the streets of Alamos and over the skies of that Spanish city!
DAMN COOL!!!
Darkrai got killed… WIIIIICKKKKEEDDDD!!!
He comes back!
WICKED X10!
But still, the Generation I bias is still lingering on in me.
Reviewing the movie, I felt that it was really just mindlessly spontaneous… because it’s sort of just happened. Ash and the gang just happened-to-be-there-at-the-very-moment-when-for-the-first-time-in-millennia-that-the-legendary-dragons-come-back-into-the-Real World’s-dimension, Ash just has to be there… and the ending was a total rip-off of the second movie, but the ocarina song wasn’t as good as Lugia’s song which single handedly restored the balance of the destroyed islands in that movie. Beautiful…
Here, everything goes back to normal with just a swish of Palkia’s arm. What the Heck!?
Idea for improvement: They should have left the town destroyed after the dragons leave and the citizens should have been seen starting to rebuild and somehow Darkrai should have comeback without the help of Palkia. That would have been more awesome.
Before this one, my Top Three were Mewtwo, Lugia and Lucario. Sure, these early movies were low on graphics but they had awesome entertainment value. After this, Darkrai is now my number three.
Bravo Darkrai and Dragons, Bravo!
So, knowing Mr. Yuyama’s work, I thought all of this was just a one shot experience. The next movie would be a lame one probably starring the screeching so-called legendary mirages teaming up with the uselessly weird Cresselia or something lamer…
Then came that Terror straight from the depths of HELL known as Giratina…
Seeing the pairing of Shaymin and Giratina, I knew this one was done for like the Celebi and Manaphy ones. But MIRACULOUSLY, this movie turned out to be even more awesome than the Darkrai one!
The Darkrai one was a sledgehammer, but this one was a Tomahawk missile!
Mr. Yuyama had something to play with this time noon ever could have predicted to have existed in Gen IV…
The Distortion World.
I mean, we’ve all seen depictions of alternate dimensions, but people, Giratina and the Sky Warrior is a masterpiece in the cinematography that is known as anime! Just watch it Pokefans, this stuff is even better that real live action movies! And I’m also including the non Distortion world backgrounds as well mind you.
Then comes…
Giratina’s Origin form. DAMN!!!!
But a movie is in its characters not its prettiness or cool-lookingness, and it delivered well. Although the random encounter stuff of Shaymin ONLY PICKING ASH’s head to sit on and no other soul in the Poke World is still there… surprisingly, the cutseyness of Shaymin in no way interferes with the awesomeness of the action at all. In short:
Giratina OWNS Dialga BIG TIME!
Giratina is frickin scary and cool in its Origin Forme.
Giratina is watching you ALL the time (he shuts his eyes is you are visible through your toilet’s mirror --- ladies beware!)
Zero is badass! (He frickin blasts Giratina in the face with his jet)
The world mourns Giratina’s pseudo-death.
Regigigas looks awesome both in his chamber and GOING FRICKIN HERCULES against a TITANIC GLACIER. His 5 mins of fame will be etched in memory for eons to come.
Giratina, although giving Ash a ride, doesn’t look too happy about it as Deoxys did back in movie 7.
Zero gets what he deserves from Dawn.
We are reminded that it isn’t over yet. The best part still yet has to come… WHeeeeeeee!!!!!
So in all, this one blasts the 2nd movie to smithereens in my book. The CGI, the action and badassness of this Awesome movie is no match for Lugia at all,
But my Gen I’ness lingers on…
This is the best movie of pokemon we have seen in years but not THE MOVIE! We need that back story stuff, we need that sense of purpose, the need for all of this to occur, and all that dark emo’ stuff, that sense of impending doom, and that little feeling of total helplessness everyone felt when Mewtwo came and showed off his powers.
Thus Giratina and the Sky Warrior gets my #2 position. But can Mewtwo hang on for the nuclear bomb that will be dropped on myself this July 2009?...
The Manaphy one was All-About-May and her farewell and a ridiculously short Kyogre cameo (but Ash going Super Saiyan was a far better Generation ending moment than anything in the Lati@s movie)...

Here is another rant on why The First Movie was so good:
“Oh c’mon MasterTrainer, that movie is so OLD!” is what many people say at my opinion. Heck, the otakus hate it for its bad dubbing, the old schoolers prefer something new and with plenty of computer graphics, and the newbies go “Mewtwo who/what?”. In fact, nonfans nowadays don’t really remember that feline humanoid at all if asked about Pokemon.
Mewtwo is awesome and here’s why. Back in 1999 Mewtwo was only in the games and if ever used, he would be undefeatable. It was a treat to see him in action, but the First movie wasn’t just some random encounter thing. Mewtwo had an dark backstory which was even darker in the Japanese version. He showed us a major flaw in the Pokemon training system we cherish so much:- why are Pokemon slaves to humans? Deep stuff that is deep enough to portray the humans as bad guys. Ethical questions like that aren’t really seen in the following movies.
Then came Mewtwo’s power. Spoilers aside, People just think for a minute… how can you really defeat something that can bend your mind to its will by just one look at you? Heck the analysis of Mewtwo’s potential is some scary stuff…
We all nowadays love the characters in the Dragonball z and Naruto franchises but till date I really haven’t seen any one of those characters face something like Mewtwo. Super Saiyans who can destroy a planet in a single rampage haven’t really faced a force that can not only restrict their movements but change their mind. BTW Psychic always owns fighting.
And what about the ninjas of Naruto? I don’t think they could fare any better than the saiyans, as Mewtwo could easily stop them in midair, listen to there thoughts if they are in hiding or even worse i.e. erase every bit of memory they have about any kind of justsu. Naruto could simply forget that the Rasengan even exists if he faces off against Mewtwo. I hope peoples jaws have dropped wide open at the realization that such a powerful being exists in Pokemon! So whenever Mewtwo says “I am the world’s most powerful Pokemon” …he really means it!
Then this movie showcases the fact that people can die in a kid’s film like Pokemon! Not only does Mewtwo kill off a lab full of scientists but nearly KILLS ASH HIMSELF. Ash haters who didn’t know this rejoice!
Some may even say that Mewtwo’s powers are boring, “all he does is move things around.” Yeah right, let’s say if we get him to move something else besides an unremembered Generation I Pokemon, like something more of today…hmmm… Let’s put John Cena of the WWE in the ring with Mewtwo and then lets see if his powers are boring.
The ending is the complaints box for everyone nowadays. Sheesh don’t you see the beauty of it? Mewtwo finally gets to see the light, the good side of the force, the mistakes of his ways with ASH’s SUICIDE! Mewtwo is then able to end the movie in a way no other movie could. Awesome stuff.

Reasons
1) The world’s strongest Pokemon appears (M2: 1, A: 1)
2) Both of them have awesome backstrories (M2: 2, A: 2)
3) Both of them are seeking revenge (M2: 3,A: 3)

5) The fight involves many other powerful legendary Pokemon (M2: 4, A: 5)
Sheesh! We only get a Mew as Mewtwo’s opponent, in the Arceus Movie we get the entire dragon trio and a Heatran to boot!
ARCEUS BEATS MEWTWO (Strike 1)
6) Ash/ some other HUMAN nearly or really does die. (M2: 5, A: 5 +x) We still aren’t really sure if anything like that will happen in the Arceus movie…we probably only know on July 18th.

Arceus as well will pass Judgment on this planet as well!11) Both Mewtwo and Arceus gain in this category:
It’s OVER NIIIINE THOUSAAAAANNNDDD!!!
M2: 9, A: 10+x) What would this single greatest Pokemon movie be like without the opinion of the (*second*) most powerful being in the universe? Well Vegeta of Dragonball Z can put his scouter on for both Arceus and Mewtwo and stand amazed and angered enough to say that legendary phrase once more…
Naruto (in reply): “Vegeta…Believe it!”
So I think we all should voice our opinions about which Pokemon movie was the greatest of them all.
