http://en.wikinews.org/wiki/Japanese_court_plans_to_seize_control_of_2channel

January 13, 2007

2channel, the largest Internet forum in the world and an ISP in Japan, has been shuttered by a Japanese court ruling in a civil slander case. The corporation managing 2channel was declared bankrupt and its assets will be seized. The ISP will close on January 15th, and the future of the famous "mega-BBS" is uncertain.

2channel's operator, Hiroyuki Nishimura, was sued in 2006 by an unnamed 35-year-old office worker who had been made fun of and insulted on one of 2channel's forums. Nishimura moved his operations outside of Japan but did not contest the judge, who awarded the anonymous office worker 5 million yen, to be taken from 2channel's meager holdings within the country, such as its ISP "2channel Provider."

Nishimura issued no official response, but the splash page of 2ch, traditionally featuring a Japanese vase, was given an sarcastic "notice" telling readers that the vase was being repossessed by the Akabane District Court.

2channel was founded in 1999 and currently receives over 2.7 million posts per day from millions of users, mostly in Japan. 2channel is hosted in California but the domain name is registered in Japan.

-_- Darn, no early GX or Pokemon DP pics now...

Well, who cares about AOL chatrooms?

2chan has ANIME PICS and HENTAI! It must be saved at all cost!

35-year-old office worker, no doubt with nothing better to do than have no life.

I wonder if he knows that now he'll be made fun of even more? You don't piss off the internet and get away with it.

Eh, I think they were just looking for an excuse to shut down 2channel.

No more pictures right after episodes of Digimon Savers/Pokemon DP/Yu-Gi-Oh GX air??!?!?

...I should care. I should care. Why don't I care? D=

Actually, I realized the pics are from Futaba Channel, and that is still up.

Amazing. Just goes to show how far the delusion of human pride, ego, and dignity can go. Not to mention people who twist the legal system and everything else with their pockets using expensive lawyers.

Addendum: thinking about this, the man should have gone after those who insulted him and not the company and the person who operated 2chan in the first place. 2chan and Hiroyuki Nishimura did nothing wrong - all they did was to provide a space he hardly had control over for insulting remarks to be posted. This is akin to like someone suing a bus or subway company over vandalism insulting to him left on their buses or trains. Worse still, instead of getting justice done on the people who insulted him, he instead had affected millions of innocent people over his delusional ego being tarnished. 35-year-old office worker who gets insulted and then sues like this - sounds like some antisocial no-life type with too much money and too much time to delude himself into thinking he's someone important and to sue people in this way. Trust me - this could get ugly. Very very ugly. TTEchidna, I agree - you don't mess with the internet and then expect to get away unscathed and above everything else.

Well, according to Wikipedia...

Because 2channel is anonymous, the place is filled with every kind of hate speech imaginable. Apart from obvious and predictable examples of this, such as the Middle East board having at least one thread containing anti-Semitic or Islamophobic speech, and the East Asian board having several explicitly racist threads about the Koreans or the Chinese, there are some forms of hate speech which are peculiar to 2ch, for example:
-The football board having many anti-football threads started by baseball fans
-The motorbike board having threads derogatory to Harley Davidson owners or biker groups (who are often called Chinsōzoku)
For one thing, "ono the poor motorcycle and football fans poor things I hope they're not emotionally crippled :(". But more importantly, anti-Semitism and racism? Sounds like a good place to shut down to me, even though I don't know what I'm talking about. o.o;

Er..then ethics and free speech come into play....0.o

Since the place DOESN't post anime pics like I thought, it won't affect me really...but still...what if someone sued Bulbagarden or Serebii and got it closed? I'm sure many people who spend all day on the internet are angry.

Reminder, not every country had free speech, in practice, that is. It might be in the constitution somewhere but it's not quite the same thing as actually having it. Now, as for Japan, I don't know how free speech is in reality, but I think it's fairly close to the western levels.

Well, perhaps we might win the case, but more likely, we'd just fold because we couldn't afford the legal fees. (Then again, we might be lucky enough to get a pro bono lawyer.)
