We all know the gist about hold items. They are special items that, when held by the Pokémon, have a special effect that will support or hinder said Pokémon during a battle: Mystic Water boosts Water-type attacks, Leftovers restores energy gradually, Choice Band increases Attack by 50% but locks you into a move, and so on.
However, how would these items work through an in-universe point of view? Why do those items work the way they do?
These are my theories regarding some hold items:
Magnet || "An item to be held by a Pokémon. It’s a powerful magnet that boosts the power of Electric-type moves."
I think this item works by drawing magnetic energy and electrical particles toward the holder, causing it to fire its attacks at increased power.
Bright Powder || "An item to be held by a Pokémon. It casts a tricky glare that lowers the opposing Pokémon’s accuracy."
This is very simple. Basically, the holder makes the powder glow, causing the opponent to be temporarily blinded and to have an harder time striking the target. Eye-less Pokémon may end up stunned in some other way.
Metal Powder || "An item to be held by Ditto. Extremely fine yet hard, this odd powder boosts the Defense and Special Defense stat."
I know, another powdery item, albeit an exclusive one. How can a simple powder boost the defenses of a Ditto? Well, look at Ditto itself. It's a blob-like creature capable of changing form, and what are blobs known for? For their ability to absorb stuff. As such, Ditto would simply absorb this powder to gain some kind of internal "armor" and as such take hits more easily.
Regarding how it stops working once it transforms, it's simply because he is forced to expel the powder from its body in order to be able to transform properly, causing it to lose its effect as a result.
Life Orb || "An item to be held by a Pokémon. It boosts the power of moves, but at the cost of some HP on each hit."
This could be considered concentrated adrenaline, in a certain sense. Basically, just like adrenaline, it causes your physical and mental prowess to increase dramatically and inflict major damage on the opponent(s). However, just like adrenaline, you also end up more and more fatigued, and you will begin feeling pain afterwards as a side effect.
