I went trawling through the forum trying to find if one already existing, but after going through threads that had the latest posts in them as far back as this time last year, I found none so...

In recent years, Marvel Studio's Cinematic Universe of films has become one of the highest grossing film franchises of all time and has effectively kicked off a race for other studios to create their own shared universes. Starting off with 2008's Iron Man, the groundwork for the universe was built and eventually culminated in the 2012 crossover, The Avengers (which currently holds the title of the third highest grossing film of all time). Since then, it has expanded to the smaller screen with Marvel's Agents of SHIELD. 2015 is set to be a big year for the franchise though with Daredevil, the first of four Netflix exclusive series', as well as The Avengers: Age of Ultron and Ant-Man, which are set to close the franchise's second phase and open the third, respectively.

Re: The Marvel Cinematic Universe Thread

I think that this setting/universe has been written good but they make it better in the next projects like making feel more like a comic book where there are fantastic things all over the place.

Another Daredevil movie but what about the Ben Affleck one, yeah he's the Batman now I almost forgot.

Aren't the Russo Brothers the guys who directed/produced (im not sure) Captain America: The Winter Soldier, so if they replace Josh then the film might take a different path but I liked the Winter Soldier but I don't know how they would direct/produce the film if the rumours are true.

Well they Spider-Man or the X-Men (or mutants or the X gene) since other movie companies have the rights for the characters and what-not,they (Marvel) have most characters they need.

I wonder how that Dr.Strange film would be like? I hope it's good.

@Boshi234; Yup, the Russo brothers directed Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The reasoning for them taking over The Avengers in the rumour, is that Captain America 3 will change the landscape of the MCU again.
As for Dr. Strange, it's being directed by Scott Derrickson, who is known for horror movies. According to Kevin Feige, it will be an "acid trip".

Marvel are sort of in a silent war with Fox over intellectual property rights. Marvel wants the rights back (in particular, they want the Fantastic Four rights) but Fox obviously don't want to hand them over, so until then, they will be separate (Hugh Jackman has even said that he'd love to cameo in The Avengers as Wolverine, but Fox won't allow it). Due to a bizarre rights situation though, both Fox and Marvel can use Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, but Marvel can't call them mutants (which is also likely why Quicksilver was called Peter, not Pietro, in X-Men: Days of Future Past).

With Spider-Man, there has been rumours to suggest that Sony are considering trying to reach a deal with Marvel (as their Amazing Spider-Man film franchise is in serious trouble), as well as yet another reboot (urgh). Overall though, Sony seem far more willing to play ball than Fox are.

I think it's time for a reboot of the Spiderman franchise, to be honest. It's not like Spiderman wasn't a part of the Avengers at one time. I'm biased though, I hate the new Spiderman films with a passion. Peter Parker doesn't look as nerdy as he should and the outfit is just, ugh. I can't put my finger on it but there just isn't something right about it if that makes sense.

Done right, it will be incredible. Done wrong, they'll kill their entire universe. No pressure or anything.

To pull that off would mean the death of atleast one main character and I don't think the audience would be ready for that. Hell, when
Gordon "died"
in TDK I almost walked out of the theater and I know someone that did.

I'd really like to see the appearance of Frank Castle eventually, but he's best as a supporting character and antagonist in my opinion.

Re: The Marvel Cinematic Universe Thread

@Toviah; I think another reboot of Spider-Man could do more harm than good at this point. The Amazing Spider-Man was released only five years after Spider-Man 3 and that series...hasn't really done well. I think The Amazing Spider-Man 2's biggest biggest flaw was that it was trying too hard to set up the expanded Spidey universe (and The Sinister Six), as opposed to just being a good Spidey film.

I think if Sony or Marvel were to try and put Spider-Man into film again in the near feature, they should probably look to how Warner Bros. and DC are handling Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Almost everyone knows Batman's origin story by now, so the DC film universe is starting off with an already established Batman.
However, the issue that arises there is that Spider-Man's origin story and in particular, Uncle Ben, is more important to Peter Parker than other heroes' origin stories are to them. So perhaps the best option would be to relaunch Spider-Man as a TV series, with the hero occasionally appearing in future Avengers movies? That way, you can go through Spider-Man's origin story in the space of a single episode, as opposed to having to dedicate a whole movie to it again.

@Peter Quill; - How Marvel adapt Civil War will be very interesting, especially as they don't have the rights to some of the big players (like Spider-Man and Mr. Fantastic; although admittedly, Mr. Fantastic's role could be filled by Hank Pym). Personally, I can see the story of Captain America 3 being loosely based on the comic book event, as opposed to being a more direct adaptation.
I can see the story something something like, following the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron, the governments of the world are pissed off that Tony Stark created Ultron and decide to implement the Superhuman Registration Act in order to keep a tighter leash on superheroes and to create some accountability. Out of guilt, Tony supports the act, but Captain America is against, like in the comics.

My main concerns though, are due to to it being told in a Captain America movie, will the focus be purely on the anti-registration side and if the movie will be given a budget closer to The Avengers? (Especially considering that there was a a $50m difference between it and Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which is equivalent to Robert Downey Jr.'s pay-check for The Avengers). Because obviously, the big appeal of Civil War wasn't that it was merely a battle between Cap and Tony, but it was a Civil War within the superhero community, so a much larger cast would be needed.

Personally, I would like to have seen Marvel adapt the storyline across two movies - a solo Captain America movie and a solo Iron Man, so that we get a closer look at both sides of the conflict, as well as the run-time and budgets of two movies to allow for a more fleshed out conflict. Take the expanded universe to another level and have the same events being told from two different viewpoints.

I understood it as taking place over multiple movies, but starting with Cap 3. And I've heard something similar to you about how it starts (Tony is guilty over Ultron going rogue given that it is his own creation and feels obligated to help the government he had once mocked).

To me the key player (and by key player I mean the one person whose rights they need to get some how) is Spider-Man. For those who are less familiar, Tony had taken Peter under his wing (at the time, they were the two science bros, not Tony and Bruce) due to their shared love for science and technology and Peter was in fact the closest thing that Tony had to a second-in-command on the pro-registration side for awhile.

But then Captain America got to Peter and got him to see that he and Tony were wrong. Cap's famous 'no you move' speech is given to Peter, which causes Peter to publicly switch sides

I just don't see who could replace Peter in that regard (because as you said Josh, Hank Pym can easily replace Mr. Fantastic).

I also see Peter Quill (I'm not biased, it just makes sense given the success of the Guardians) replacing Nova at the end, leading to the Infinity Gauntlet storyline (basically Nova shows up to rip Tony for causing Civil War while all the nasty space shit is happening, leading to Earth being horribly unprepared), which causes all the bad stuff during the Thanos arcs to happen, and also causes the Avengers to put aside their differences (Cap and Tony will realize that they need each other to face Thanos).

Re: The Marvel Cinematic Universe Thread

@Peter Quill; To be honest, I can't see Civil War working without Spider-Man. One of the most important moments for me, which cannot be replicated by another character currently in the Cinematic Universe, was when Spider-Man revealed his identity on live TV. Spider-Man having to hide his secret identity as Peter Parker is an important part of his character, while everyone in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is happy with the world knowing exactly who they are.

In fact, considering the end of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, would just throwing Spider-Man into the MCU as an already established hero even work? Because if he existed, S.H.I.E.L.D. would have known about him and y'know.

Re: The Marvel Cinematic Universe Thread

Fully agreed. Two of the biggest moments to me (the Cap speech I already mentioned and the Peter Parker reveal you just brought up) really don't work without Spidey. Which tells me either they're really going to change the plot (which... well I trust Marvel now given their body of work and that would be better than trying to shoehorn someone who really doesn't work into the plot in Spidey's place) or they have some backroom stuff going on in order to borrow Spidey (which would be AMAZING).

I had also completely forgotten about the SHIELD angle. I feel like they can find a way to handwave that (or just bank on most people not noticing)

Now a live action Spiderman series would be something I could get behind, especially if it would be like the cartoon series that aired in the early to mid 90's. DC has done it with "Arrow" and now "The Flash" with reasonable success so it can be done and it'll allow for the type of pacing and character development that's rarely possible in movies.

An origin story needs to exist so the audience can understand the character and become more empathetic with him in my opinion, even if the origin story is still well known. I loved the way Rocksteady did it in the Arkham series, with Batman tripping on Scarecrow's fear toxin. He're a link to it if you haven't played the game. This part gave me chills (no pun intended) and really explained a lot in the Arkham universe. There's just something about seeing it, I guess.

I'm not a fan of the idea of Batman VS Superman. It just seems like a cash grab on a gimmick crossover. If they were to do something like the Injustice games then that would be more than awesome. I've always found Superman to be more interesting when he's a villain.

Re: The Marvel Cinematic Universe Thread

Did I hear someone say "We want an Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer?"

Because after it was leaked last night, Marvel thought "Screw it" and released it:

Re: The Marvel Cinematic Universe Thread

I think somebody inside Marvel is working for Hydra, got their hands on the trailer, and was told by their superior to leak it.

As for the trailer, I WANT TO SEE THE MOVIE NOW!!

Re: The Marvel Cinematic Universe Thread

Marvel are in negotiations with Benedict Cumberbatch for the role of Doctor Stephen Strange.

Honestly, I know a lot of people want Cumberbatch in the role but personally, I don't. I think he would have been perfect for the role of Namor, or even Dormammu, instead.

Re: The Marvel Cinematic Universe Thread

Marvel have announced:

28th July 2017 - Thor: Ragnarok
3rd November 2017: Black Panther
6 July 2018: Captain Marvel
2nd November 2018: The Inhumans
4th May 2018: Avengers: The Infinity War Part 1
3rd May 2019: Avengers: The Infinity War Part 2

Chadwick Boseman has been cast as Black Panther.

Makes sense. Civil War leading directly into the Infinity Gauntlet storyline. All of Earth's heroes fall asleep on the job fighting each other while the space heroes (Guardians / Dr. Strange) gradually lose ground to Thanos. Peter Quill bitches out the Avengers when Earth is next in line... and then total war.

Re: The Marvel Cinematic Universe Thread

Marvel are really bigging up Captain America: Civil War, stating that it marks the beginning of Phase 3 (so Ant-Man is Phase 2?) and noting that Black Panther will appear in the movie.

Official concept art of Black Panther:

I'm feeling the hype. I have to say though, I predicted Age of Ultron leading into Civil War.

Re: The Marvel Cinematic Universe Thread

I'm very excited by all this news. So much to look forward to. I'm glad that Avengers 3 is being split. No doubt the story itself will be big enough to warrant it, but also the amount of characters to put into that story will require ample screen time. So it's a good call.

Re: The Marvel Cinematic Universe Thread

I am completely psyched about Black Panther... that and Guardians 2 in one year? 2017 is gonna be on fire.

Re: The Marvel Cinematic Universe Thread

Really excited that T'Challa is finding his way to the big screen. But whose gonna play him? On that note who will play the other characters? I also hear that Marvel's got rights for Ghost Rider and Punisher back. Not sure about ol skull head but a TV series about Punisher would be pretty cool and much better for him than any movie. I saw a fan video that Thomas Jane helped make that would be a good example of what a TV Punisher could get up to. It's called Dirty Laundry and it's on youtube. It's dark, violent and bloody the good stuff for a Punisher adaptation.
