Last week saw a lot of online chatter about the appearance of Captain America’s shield in the background of a scene from Iron Man. Is it just director Jon Favreau’s wink at comic fans, or part of an interconnected narrative that relates to those newly confirmed Captain America and Avengers movies?

A couple of days ago, I probably would’ve said the former. But now comes a new set of photos from The Incredible Hulk, which may include our first look at the Super-Soldier Serum that turned Steve Rogers into Captain America.

Super-Soldier Serum?

The new rumor is that the blue liquid in the photo at the right is the serum in question — used during World War II to create “a super soldier,” and again now to turn Emil Bronsky into the Abomination.

The shield or the serum separately is an Easter egg. The cameo of Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury at the end of Iron Man, by itself, is fan service. And the appearance of Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark in The Incredible Hulk is — well, I don’t know yet.

But taken together, these represent an effort by Marvel, or at least the writers and directors of these two films, to subtly and quickly create a “universe” — something not easily done in movies designed to stand on their own.

Oh, I know Marvel’s plan is to release an Iron Man sequel and solo projects for Thor and Captain America before bringing the characters together for The Avengers. I just didn’t expect them to be so deft in laying the groundwork.

The link above has a few pictures that are referenced here, and a number of extra links.

Personally, I missed the Captain America shield (and, if the top image in the link provided is supposed to be the scene in question...I'm still missing it...), but it's very interesting (to a continuity freak like myself) to see all of these movies become interconnected and playing off each other. I love the idea of something in one movie having an affect on something in another movie, but not to an extent that you HAVE to see both. I just...love what Marvel's doing here. Now if only they'd obey continuity in the comics...

Sadly, I can't seem to access the link. I wish they did create a movieverse. I mean, unless I'm mistaken, there aren't any obvious references to X-Men in Spiderman and vice versa. I would have expected at least a Daily Bugle random headline or something. IIRC, the only thing we get is the Doctor Strange or whatever reference during Spiderman 2. I mean, you would think Magneto or Jean would warrant at least a brief mention by someone (like JJJ). Of course, X-Men may not take place during any Spiderman events, but that strains credibility, considering they all live in the same area really. And what of the FF? They live closer to the Daily Bugle than the X-Men do. Nada.

So weird... Wish I knew why it was gone. Didn't seem to reveal anything secret. Not even a different link on the site I got it from.

A small mention would be a nice easter egg, if nothing else. A newspaper on a desk, or something. Or even an off-hand reference. But I guess if the Avengers movie works (should be...interesting to see if it does), we could conceivably see some sort of Marvel Team-Up movie. Maybe a Human Torch/Spider-Man movie. Captain America/Wolverine. Ghost Rider/Punisher/Wolverine.

Just saw the movie again with some friends that hadn't, and I must say that is most definitely a Captain America shield.
