The reason I'm writing this topic, comes from an experience I had last year that I NEVER had in my life before as a gamer, and I thought to share it. Have you ever seen a game that on paper seemed to be one of the stupidest ideas ever made for a videogame ever.... only to become one of your personal favorite games of all time? Because last year I had this experience with one game like that: Chrono Gear: Warden of Time.

This game is a 2d action platformer that.... uses the avatars of the Hololive Vtubers to build its story... now, I NEVER got close to the world of Hololive or the Vtubers, and on paper this idea sounds REALLY dumb, I mean a game based on Vtubers? Who'd want to be interested in that? So you can see that normally I wouldn't touch something like this, so why in the world would have I decided to play a game like this? Well, the answer can be resumed in a single word: Galaxytrail. This game was developed by the same people who made the two Freedom Planet games, two of my favorite platformers of all time, so I went on this game pretty much exclusively on trust for people who in past already gave me games I loved with all my heart, but even so I was still really skeptical about it despite that.... but I wasn't ready for the game marvel I would end up playing.

Like, this game is perfect: the gameplay is really well done, the level design is a fest of creativity in every single stage, the soundtrack is outstanding, and the storyline is surprisingly actually really engaging. Even thought my trust for Galaxytrail was already high, I can't believe how much heart they put in a production like this. Other big companies would have treated an idea like this like a joke, especially when some of them don't seem to take their job seriously anymore... (looking at you Retro Studios).

Long story short: a game that on paper was one of the dumbest ideas ever, turned out being my personal GOTY of 2025 (yeah, I went there). Have you ever experienced something like this with a game? Have you ever played a game to which you were extremely skeptical at first, only to end up loving it to death?

Believe it or not. I thought EarthBound would just good, but the game ended up becoming my all time favorite video game and besides Ness is fun to play as in smash bros and his game was definitely NOT what i expected

Super Mario 64 was also a headscratcher for me. I thought the premise of "Mario needs to rescue the Princess and needs to collect 120 stars in order to beat this game" would not work for the n64. But i was wrong, while its not my favorite game of the Mario series, i grew to really love it and consider one of the best games of the series.
