The more I think of it, its a shame Ash's "released" Pokemon weren't Oak'd instead

As we know, when Ash releases a Pokemon they usually never appear again. However when Ash Oak's his Pokemon, they're all guaranteed future appearances at the end of each arc and most of them get to come back for a major battle at some point or another.

Primeape could have been another Kingler/Muk/Tauros/Snorlax type Pokemon, another one of those Kanto reserves sent to Oak's. Therefore we could have seen Primeape come back every 200 eps or so. But since Ash released Primeape, we never see it again. Just think of how amazing it would be to see Primeape be like Muk or Heracross, and suddenly come back for a battle. What a damn shame.

Pidgeot. What should have happened is after Ash returned from Orange, Ash would find out that most of those other Pidgeotto also evolved to Pidgeot, hence them being able to take care of themselves. Therefore Pidgeot could have then went to Oak's lab, and we could have seen it in battle again. But again, released Pokemon are doomed never to be seen again. Oh well, Swellow was Ash's best bird anyway.

Butterfree and Lapras. These are the only two releases I didn't mind, as Lapras was always intended to be returned to its family, and Butterfree had to start a family. At least we did see Lapras re-appear in a late Johto episode, one of the only released Pokemon to get a follow-up.

Gliscor. This one still has a chance to be redeemed, as it can still be part of the Paul fight in the league. We'll see in roughly a few weeks if Gliscor will go the way of the above Pokemon or become the next Charizard/Squirtle.

Also, why do people consider Larvitar Ash's Pokemon? Ash never captured it. He never captured Haunter either. Those two were never part of Ash's roster, it makes it seem like people think Ash released more Pokemon than he did. By this logic Jigglypuff was Ash's Pokemon because it tagged around just like Haunter did, or that Hippopotas from DP.

Its a shame those 5 Pokemon will never appear again. Hopefully there is still hope for Gliscor.

I actually think there should have been more releases actually. Let's face it, Ash has more pokemon than he really needs, at Oak they are neglected and barely shown. Not all of them mind you, but those that are done developpement wise. Take for exemple Charizard. He had that abandonnement issue that was swept under the carpet right after its cpature episode, then it evolved, then it evolved again, it got the diosbediance plot, he then learn to trust Ash, had an epic battle in the Orange League finals but then what ? I mean, he then had nowhere to go developpement wise and it showed in early Johto where he was just there, no personality really just power. But that's boring and after that he came back 4 times, each time hogging the spotlight and just being there, not really personable, not making Ash progress. I think the Charicific Valley should have been an Island Volcano in the Orange Islands and after his Orange League win, Ash dumps him there and never see him again or maybe once in a movie, but not in gyms, leagues or battle frontier facility. Not because I don't think reserves should be used in them, but because it didn't take the plot anywhere since they're was nothing more to do with him as a character. Or Infernape, his storyline is so tied to Paul, and to proving to Paul that he is a strong pokemon, etc. that it's fair to ask, is there a point to keeping Infernape if Paul isn't there ? Not really in my opinion and as much as I like the fire monkey, I think it might be a godd idea to leave it with Paul at the end of Sinnoh.

They only pokemon that Ash should keep at Oak and later reuse are the ones that still have developpement to go through, whether through evolution or character developpement, since it makes both them and Ash progress as trainers.

So yeah, if a character is done, and I mean really done, like Pidgeot, Primeape, Butterfree, Lapras, Charizard and Squirtle were, then I have no problem with them being released and never seen again. I'll reserve judgement on Gliscor until DP is over.

Technically every Pokemon is "done" after they're sent to Oak's, only exceptions are guys like Phanpy and Cynda, who missed out on development.

Theoretically Ash could never use any of his older Pokemon ever again. Why do the writers do it? Because they want to, so I don't see why a Pokemon being "done" development wise means it shouldn't come back.

Seriously, what reason is there for ANY Pokemon to return after their saga ends, then?

I feel really bad that Pidgeot, Lapras, Primeape, and Butterfree were never seen or heard from again. I'm not sure if Gliscor would be in the same boat as them.

I don't care about any of them but Gliscor and Primape. I want them both to come back one day, but it probably will not happen.

Right now, unless the series branches off into something like the Battle Frontier, which it won't because the BW series is already confirmed to start right after DP, Ash's Oak'd Pokemon wouldn't be significant for a really long period of time. The biggest upside to having his old Pokemon return is just to see them in battle like back in their region. It's the nostalgia of having seen the show and his old Pokemon from the beginning, and having them return.

You guys aren't tired of complaining about those released pokemon yet?
