So I was in the bookstore today and found a new manga I hadn't heard about before. The title is Kaitou! Pokemon 7 ("The Mysterious Thief! Pokemon 7"), and the first volume came out in Japan on March 28th, 2008.

The series is about a young boy named Hiori who leads a double life as the mysterious thief known as "Pokemon 7" (and before anyone asks, I don't know where the "7" comes from). Pokemon 7, along with his trusty partner Lucario, retrieves stolen objects from other thieves and returns them to their rightful owners.

During the day, Hiori works at the bread shop Sun-Sun. His co-worker, Nazuna, is a Lois Lane-type character who falls in love with Pokemon 7 while not thinking too highly of Hiori. The series, from what I've read so far, seems to deal with Pokemon 7's various encounters with criminals while Hiori tries desperately to keep his secret identity safe.

I've only read the first two chapters of the book, but I'm already hooked on the series. The first chapter deals with an old clock thief who kidnaps Nazuna. After Pokemon 7 rescues her, Nazuna falls in love with him. The second chapter deals with a reporter named Mako who tries to discover Pokemon 7's secret identity (she suspects that Hiori is the thief), but her attempt ultimately fails.

Here's the manga's entry on the Shogakukan website, for anyone interested.

OMG. I so much would love to see it. It looks so unique!

I heard the title, Japanese Wikipedia has a great listing of all Pokemon Mangas (even those not released in Tankobon).

I would love to see some character pictures ('cause I'm collecting materials to open the as-complete-as-possible archive of Pokemon character photos).

Great finding, Dogasu.

Dogasu didn't mention it (even though the Japanese writing is clearly on the cover), so I figure I'll do the honors: this manga was done by Miho Asada. According to the Shogakukan website you just linked, she's the same person who worked on the "Pokemon Getto Daze!" manga.

Yeah. It's clearly written on the cover. The Manga-ka is Miho Asada, the same woman who drew "Pokemon Getto Da Ze" and Pokemon Anime Episode Adaptations from Pokemon Wonderland. I like her art, from what I saw. Pokemon Getto Daze looks like an enjoyable manga, I've got some chapter scans in Chinese.

HELL. YEAH.

Getto Da Ze is one of my favorite Pokemon manga ever! No wonder this series seems so imaginative and cute. :"D

The "secret identity" thing, the hero working in a bread shop, and the love interest who dislikes his secret identity all make me think of Walnut in Magical Pokemon Journey... hm.

Okay, but I don't think the bread shop thing is a staple of the genre.

Sounds interesting, though. I'll have to pick it up.

That looks so cool. o.o Very interesting. You gotta love how Pokémon lends itself to so many genres and storylines.

I hope it gets released in the US!!
Ooh, seconded.

I love that Viz is publishing Pokemon manga again so that a series like this actually has a real shot of being published in the States :)

I actually don't have a scanner here in Japan, so I can't really help you out there. But the page I linked to does have a scan of two of the pages from the manga (it's the link under the cover art).

So...are the criminals packing heat or Pokemon?

Pokemon, of course. The clock thief in the first chapter, IIRC, had a Zugaidos. Mako, the reporter in the second chapter, had a Mimilop and a Trideps.

say, in the upper right corner of the big "7", that's furigana for "sebun", right? I hope so, because that number is so damn confusing to pronounce in Nihongo. I mean, it's "nana", it's "shichi", it's Englishized as "sebun"... yeah.

Yup. It's read as "Pokemon Sebun."

Just finished two more chapters. In the third one, Pokemon 7 is the target of another "mysterious thief" named Rock, who sees Pokemon 7 as his rival. The chapter deals with Pokemon 7 going through a cave filled with traps that include a battle with Booburn. Once Pokemon 7 reaches the end and meets Rock, his rival teleports away with the help of his Sirnight.

In Chapter Four, Pokemon 7 hears about a person who's been stealing pokemon. Pokemon 7 decides to pursue him while Rock tags along (despite his assertions that Pokemon 7 is his rival). After battling the other thief's Mumage, Pokemon 7 catches a glimpse of the thief's face and recognizes it as belonging to someone named Lily...

Other random stuff: Pokemon 7 keeps his Monster Balls on the front of his uniform. His pokemon are Lucario, Manene, Fuwaride, Mojumbo, Berobelt, and Ellade.

Also, here's a chapter listing:

Chapter One: "The Mysterious Thief of Justice Appears!"
Chapter Two: "The Real Face of Theft"
Chapter Three: "The Rival's Challenge"
Chapter Four: "The Fateful Reunion"
Chapter Five: "The Rescue from the Ginga-Dan"
Chapter Six: "The Looming Assassin"
Chapter Seven: "The Stolen Memory"
Chapter Eight: "Remember, Lily!"
Chapter Nine: "The Darkness that Covers the World"
Chapter Ten: "Get Over your Sense of Caution!"
Chapter Eleven: "Defeated by the Hand of Evil!?"
Chapter Twelve: "Stop Darkrai!!"

I wish I had scans of this...I would totally scanlate it. Maybe when I get mine I'll do from the book scans...I would just need to find a new translator.

It would be cool. I bet 5 bucks that the manga will be never licensed by Viz, so you can finally do a successful scanslation!

I love how you always complain about not having the money to buy the manga yet are willing to gamble this non-existent money at the drop of a hat.

Alrighty, my book is ordered~! I don't know when it will get here...but it's ordered.

I love manga so much...it gets me all joyful to get a new one~<3
