During the Great Annihilation, the world that existed before the creation of Pokémon was laid to waste by the actions of humans.
After that, the world was reborn into the one we know today.
The legendary Pokémon that molded earth in those days gave our world new life in the form of magical creatures to accompany humanity.
They gave Earth space and time, land and water, fire and lightning, and all those elements that give our world stability.
The forces set loose upon the earth were wild and fearsome back then, and in the age before they had settled into a state of calm and balance, the people and creatures were in constant danger of destruction by floods, earthquakes, and other disasters.
To rescue these people and Pokémon, a great flying fish Pokémon named Volantis was called into the world.
When a great calamity approached those who had nowhere to run, Volantis would emerge from the sea and allow those in danger to ride upon her back to safety.
For centuries Volantis fulfilled this task and became a hero to all living things.
Finally, the elements matured and stabilized, and the era of constant catastrophe drew to a close.
But Volantis was called upon one final time, the day a tsunami two-thousand feet high bore down upon the lands which lie the the far north-east of what is now Unova.
Unable to carry the many endangered ones to safety in time, Volantis dove into the waters to the south of the shore, and her body became a gigantic, fish-shaped island to serve as a wall between the ocean and the mainland.
And she remained an island, never to swim through the skies or seas again.
The great serpent Pokémon, Zephyranthes was active in those days as well.
As he slithered deep beneath the ground, Zephyranthes created the fault lines that transect the earth’s crust. And when he came above ground moved about earth’s surface, the trails he left behind established the boundaries of the regions that span the globe.
As Zephyranthes slithered across the new island, he drew a line across what was once the head of Volantis.
So it was agreed that the head of Volantis would become the eastern part of the region of Unova, and that her body and tail would become a vast region known as Munia.
The waters that filled the open mouth of Volantis became known as Undella Bay, and her jaw would one day become a small district called East Unova.
Arceus blessed the sibling regions of Unova and Munia with more than one hundred fifty unique species Pokémon to share between them.
Unova’s native Pokémon were also Munia’s native Pokémon.
Two great kingdoms rose in these two regions, Kingdom of the Vale in Unova, and the Kingdom of Picia in Munia.
But as the ages passed, dark times befell Munia.
A king from across the sea seized control of the Kingdom of Picia, and renamed it after himself.
He drained the life from the land to allow himself to live longer, and for two hundred years he ruled Munia as a tyrant
During the same age in which the twin princes of the Kingdom of the Vale waged civil war in Unova, the people and Pokémon of Munia rose up against the tyrant king, Elias.
Though the rebels fought bravely, the army of King Elias was too powerful, and his evil magic proved insurmountable.
The freedom fighters found themselves on the verge of total defeat.
Zephyranthes saw the struggle of the inhabitants of Munia, and the serpent lent them his strength in their war to overthrow the wicked king.
But even the power of the legendary Pokémon was not enough to dethrone Elias.
To spare the people of Munia from an endless reign of terror, every Pokémon in the land willingly offered the entirety of their strength to Zephrantes, sacrificing their lives so that the great serpent could become an unstoppable storm which crushed Elias beneath a wall of water, and washed his capitol into the sea.
Zephyranthes was never seen again, and the land of Munia was liberated, but at the cost of the lives of all of its Pokémon.
The people of Munia mourned their loss deeply, and could not bear their loneliness in the total absence of Pokémon.
So the people of Munia built a fleet of ships and set of on a great journey.
Munia’s vessels visited every corner of the globe, Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, Kalos, and other regions too numerous to name.
And at each of them, the people disembarked and befriended Pokémon of all shapes and sizes, and invited them to return with them to Munia, to repopulate the devastated land and to fight alongside them in protecting it, so that evil would never threaten Munia again.

I like etiological mythology type stuff, especially in regards to Pokémon, so I banged this up out of nowhere and felt like posting it. Its kind of based on a setting for some old fic project of mine from 2011 that never went anywhere.
It was fic where a region based on Long Island, NY was presumed to be located east of Unova. I made a map of it here if it makes my faux mythology make any more sense.
